Surf Movie Shot on Red with Vincent Laforet and others

Great stuff!!

Great stuff!!

I really like the trailer a lot. I thought I saw a bolex in there somwhere, what other formats were you shooting in?

You said you were maybe going to have for some more filming. If possible do you think you could try to get a barrel shot from a board cam that is mounted on the rear of the board facing forward. I saw some shots like that in second thoughts. It's my favorite kind of board shot, really puts the wave in perspective.

Sick stuff, Jamie, beautiful locations and I was down with the editing of the trailer...

Incredible!, congratulations

... now I just need to find a job working part II.

thanks

thanks

to everyone, thankyou. any thoughts on the box based editing at the start? can I use it in the film?

the boxes work great as a powerful opener. very energetic editing. one little thing I would do is find a better sound for the moment when you flick on that lighter and maybe even ad something like a slow motion extreme close up of the flame... the original sound is a bit flimsy compared to the epic mood your building up.

apart from that I like it a lot... especially burning the asp rulebook!

looking forward to see the finished film...

LIghter etc

LIghter etc

Thanks Kay, I agree. the lighter was never the best sound, just what we had on file in the last moments of prepping the trailer. and think u make a gr8 point about a close up. definitely things we will do for the movie segment bout burning the book, not following rules etc.

thinking to use the box framing for the intros to all the different parts of the film, the diff locations, the interviews etc. will it get to be to much you think?

If it´s the boxes with the same music each time it might get too repetitive... if the music changes it should work... I guess the only way to find out is just trying it and then see how it feels...

I agree with kay, the same music will get too repetitive, but that effect won't go with just any music so just be careful about when you use it.

Maybe you could do something where the boxes are a transition. For example you are transitioning between footage shot at the same place but on different days with different weather. Maybe the difference would be to jarring for a straight cut. You could play that clip, then complete black out for a frame or two, then have that clip pop in again as the small bottom right boxed clip, then put a landscape/establishing shot of the next session as the top right clip, then add in a surfing clip from the new session on the right slightly larger. Black out for a frame or two then pop that clip up to full screen.

If that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll post an example

Hey Jamie we used that box based style of editing on one of my snowboarding films called Pulse a few years ago. We kind of overdid it and the response was not as positive as it could have been. The main issue was we used it in the riding sections as well as the intros. I think you did a great job with the boxes in the trailer but I would be very careful to not over do it in the film. For sure do NOT use them for any of the action. My 2 cents. Footage looks sick BTW.
Good work.

Jamie,

Howzit braddah...check your PM box

I PM'd you some feedback and ideas. As you know I have deep experience in action sports, including extensive surfing media production.

Excellent looking trailer.

I am guessing a 5D was one of the cameras used, because Vincent Laforet's "Reverie" was so instrumental in getting people excited about that camera's possibilities.

Glad to see he mixes it up!

Great stuff Jamie, I have some footage/photos of you that I took in 1994 whilst living with you, your dad and sister at Pipeline, its only Hi-8 unfortunately but hey,....back then there was none of this digital stuff.
If your ever down under give me a yell, maybe we can shoot some more surfing images
