RAWworks:

"On Saturday October 3rd, Rodney Charters, ASC and Cristian Luna shot a short movie using the RED ONE, Canon 7D and 5D MkII side by side.

The short film "Endless Possibilities" was shot in one day using all three cameras simultaneously."

The Canon cameras have their place. But not as "A" cameras. Still, I'm interested to see how this turns out. Of course seeing it on the internet is one thing. In a theater on a big screen is entirely different.

I think there's a very, very large middle ground where the Canon may cut it for many kinds of shoots, and is being used right now - on the small screen.

I think how it will turn out is that other cameras will come alone offering the same benefits that a 5D or &D or IDmkIV is providing right now, but with much better ergonomics for motion capture. And these current stills cameras will be blown out of the water.

There's one thing that these stills cameras offer that will be very hard to replace, though - the "stealth" factor - being able to shoot looking like a humble tourist. Sometimes it pays not to look like a pro.

Andrew,

Not sure if you made it to our RAWworks Open House yesterday .... we had over 150 people attend .... looks like you're based a few miles away from us .... if you want to come over any time this week and see the RED/Canon Intercut material projected out of the Barco 2k DLP projector up on a big DI screen, you're more than welcome ... it looks pretty amazing and we use all light iron Apple technology (no expensive HEAVY IRON Lie IQ Pablo systems) ... if you do want to come over and check out the footage that Rodney Charters shot, maybe you could give an unbiased report back to this thread.

Let me know when you want to come over .... we're on Santa Monica Blvd, one block west of La Brea, next to the Formosa Cafe on the Warner Hollywood Lot.

Call me tomorrow.

Neil

Its seems Shane Hurburt loves his 5D camera so much that he quoted saying "its the game changer"...

Interesting...

I'm interested in the reason of posting 700kb/s 648x480 footage.

There are enough folks here also who could give an unbiased opinion. Barco 2K projector is not necessary. 1080p footage in high bit rate available for download would do just fine.

It is if one is basically trying to determine whether or not footage from one camera holds up in intercuts with another on a large screen.

Of course...and while that is being done, it would be practical to do the same with small 1080p screens.

Hi-res Vimeo versions of the RED/Canon Intercut reel ...

Hi-res Vimeo versions of the RED/Canon Intercut reel ...

Finally managed to post some hi-res versions of the RED/Canon Intercut reels up on Vimeo .... check them out:

We've been totally surprised by the interest shown in our RED/Canon shoot with Rodney .... we're a strong RED post-house (very first images of the first RED prototype were graded in our theater) and have finished a ton of RED movies .... but this Canon thing seems to have caught everyone by surprise ... we're eagerly awaiting the arrival of Scarlet and Epic but in the meantime will continue to push forward the harmonious integration of RED RAW and Canon H.264 .... if you'd had told me nine months ago that I would be taking an 8 bit H.264 codec seriously as an acquisition medium, I'd have said you were crazy. It's being used on many TV shows now and if you've had a chance to see Vincent LaForest RED/EOS 5d MkII Surfer reel or 'Nocturne' you might be surprised .... we screened Vincent's Surfer video on the 60 ft screen and LA Film school and it looked amazing .... all the shots above the water are RED and everything under the water is Canon plus a few arial shots from a remote helicopter.

Let me know what you think of Rodney's RED/Canon Intercut work .... we'll be holding another RAWworks Open House in December if you want to come along and see the footage on a DLP projector.

In the meantime, enjoy the hi-res clips on Vimeo.

Cheers,
Neil

Thanks Neil for taking some time to upload the hi-res content. But, although I have a Vimeo account, I can't download the original source, which is what we're looking for, no ? :wink5:

Oui ... will try and get what you want tomorrow ... things have gone crazy these last few months with this Canon/RED stuff ... still trying to catch up.

BTW, I used to work in La Defense .... really liked Paris ... if you ever make it over to LA, give us a call ... we know a few decent restaurants with good French wine ... when we do screenings on The Lot I try my hardest to persuade the organizers to buy French wine ... they have no idea how good European wine can be.

Salut.

It really is nice that we are at the point where the camera is no longer an accepted excuse for not making a good film. As I have said, if Charters can feel comfortable shooting Canon, no/low budget filmmakers should as well.
