That's how long to took to close down a thread discussing the morality of a major corporation knowingly (allegedly) sponsoring a drug cheat. It seemed like a sensible and civil discussion with input from a variety of perspectives. Is ethical enquiry so far "off topic" that there is no room for it on RedUser?

I believe so!

This was really disappointing. I'm glad I sold my Epic.

Isn't the whole point of an "off topic" category in a forum to provide a venue for "off topic" discussion, away from the "on topic" threads where there is an imperative to resolve and accomplish something?

No - it really isn't "on topic." And nothing could or would be resolved or accomplished by the discussion here. Your characterization of the discussion is proof in point.

Terry is correct. There are some noisy topics that shouldn`t be closed but that topic I agree was an unnecessarily low blow.

Thankfully, you won't find discussions here about gun control, gay rights, terrorism, pet abuse, drug legalization, the President, Congress, the situation in the Middle East or the secret formula for Coke. There is a whole world out there to discuss these things. I think that "Off Topic" in here still means having some relevance to cameras, filmmaking, etc. Just my opinion, though. :smiley:http://www.pinterest.com/pin/create/extension/http://www.pinterest.com/pin/create/extension/

Seeing as the discussion related to the ethical or otherwise behaviour of the owner of this particular camera manufacturer, I would have thought that the closed down and now erased thread did pass the relevance test. I would think that a news story suggesting that Canon or Sony had made questionable sponsorship decisions might also be relevant and of interest to the filmmaking community. But that too is simply my opinion.

16 minutes...

Title idea for the next thread you might want to start. :)

point was made. Thread deleted. Maybe let it go.

Not sure why someone would register an account on REDuser and wait 4 years before deciding to finally take part in the discussions on such a topic...

REDuser is about RED cameras users and filmmaking in general so any political / legal / controversial topic has never been welcome here and I for one prefer it to stay like that.

Truth!

no idea who was sponsored by who or when...i missed the thread...

I didn't get to comment on the previous thread, but this is what I wanted to say, though it is ironic that it seems I am guilty of the same.

I find it completely cowardly and ignorant to use an internet forum to try to morally slam another person. A leader of a company or organization is such an easy target, and to judge from the sidelines without ANY genuine insight into the motives and actual facts is simply INSANE.

I don't entirely agree with that, while there are topics which would merit closing or deletion before they got out of hand I think an "Off topic" section should be available for all kinds of discussion, thats the whole point of "Off topic" there is plenty of other sections here to chat about everything from Red Cameras to workflow or even just general cinematography if thats what your here for but there are occasionally political topics or legal topics which at the very least could lead to an attempt at civil discussion because like it or not these topics effect us as professionals and filmmakers in more ways then none and having a discussion with other filmmakers about such things can give us various viewpoints in which to make informed decisions at the voting booth or on the set.
Just because a thread is there doesn't mean your required to look at it much less respond to it or get involved in the discussion.

You didn't miss anything. The article discussing the issue lost all its credibility with the very first sentence. But anyone who follows the events and companies being discussed there should be able to see that.

No, I wasn't the moderator who closed the thread. However, while this is the "off topic" section of the forums, the discussion still needs to be on-point to some degree. Issues that typically generate emotional or political responses are nipped in the bud rather quickly. This one may have terminated prematurely, but there seemed to already be some finger pointing and accusations flying along with mere conjecture over the matter. I was about to make a post pointing out the deficiencies in the opening statement of the article being discussed and to ask that those participating in the thread maintain a civil demeanor and attempt to address the matter with rational thought. So it was already deteriorating. Turns out one of the other mods closed it about then. It was starting to turn into a smear campaign anyway, so I probably would have closed it after making it through to the end for a read, something I didn't completely do with the thread after seeing it was closed.

Millions of people with dumb little yellow rubber bands also sponsored a cheat. ;) Seems odd to pick on one person in particular. Connecting it to RED and cinematography/cameras or even technology seems like an extreme stretch.

(Personal opinion though is that said cheat did more good in the world than the last 100 years of honest athletes so... eh... they took a trivial meaningless sporting event and turned it into something that actually improved the world. How delightfully subversive and grand.)

Anyone notice that Macdonald's sponsors the Olympics?

Is that an oxymoron? SHouldn't it be sponsored by an morally responsible organic food brand. Or, maybe nobody should sponsor the olympics in the event that most likely there will be athletes who are breaking the rules for a competitive edge.

I like my grandmothers old saying.

"remember, when you point a finger at someone you have three pointing straight back at your self."

Priceless! Love these old sayings that are worth a large paragraph of admonishment. They stick with you.
