Ummm....I'm going to go ahead and say 1000fps would be more useful than 28k at 25fps. IMHO. Just cuz Jarred and I were battling about it.

I have a few questions.

Is it just me or does the Epic S35 seem like the only real eligible brain for most film production? That's where PL glass stops in the chain and lenses won't behave like ones that are to have their focus pulled outside of PL. Except for the RED FF35 lenses maybe.

Also. These ergonomics seem very front heavy to me. The lens seems low but maybe that is adjustable.

But in the end it will all be in the images and perhaps I can't even digest what they are doing here cuz it's so progressive. WOW!

The camera of the future. Red is taking too long, and will always be making the Scarlet the coolest by just the latest projected specs.

Pull focus with the utmost skill and just plain old guessing when the little itty bitty 1080p monitor doesn't help for your focusing.


...now there needs to be a 2K LCD monitor to attach to the camera...hmmm...

Would the image sensor for the 9k and 28k Epic have more dynamic range than 35mm or 70mm film? I would think so because it's bigger..no?

Yes. The brochure specifies 13+ stops of dynamic range for each pixel. If you resample 28K down to 2K for delivery, read noise drops by almost 4 stops, giving you 17+ stops of dynamic range in the final image.

I just watched Baraka on Blu-Ray. Wow! now I see I can have a 65mm 9K Red.
I guess I can go make Baraka 2 3D!

I think the biggest question (Literally!) is how the hell do you project 28K?
The FX guys just shat themselves though.

Here's an interesting one. Can you window the 6K or 9K Epics to S35 for normal projects and then go all full frame for your Barakaesqe stuff?

Also interesting that the 5K Epic has a 2:1 format sensor.

The Lens Guru can answer: What lenses would you use on the FF35 Scarlet or Epic? You're probably busy, but, it'll be cool if you end up finding the time to get into many more lens tests next year.

Seriously, though, I think with sensor this big you would not shoot anything faster than f/16...otherwise you will get something like 0.1mm DOF for close subjects...

The Epic 617 is interesting comparing sensor/negative area with 15perf 65mm IMAX.

Epic 617 is 186mm X 56mm IMAX is 69.6mm X 48.5mm.

Recording media and recording time for REDCODE 42, 225 and 500? is my first question.

How long will be the longest cable for connecting a RED Brain to recording media be?

Read/Reset time and skew?

Sealed units?, heat dissipation?

The Scarlet S35 Brain is more than happy to wield a PL mount.

if i start with a 2/3" Scarlet i'd like a mini-RED zoom lens for it...

Another thought, I hope the 1-30fps scarlets can at least window down to 2/3" to achieve higher frame rates... kinda like the R1 does.

EDIT (8pm on the 13th): Today Jim said the Scarlet boards won't be big enough to do some cool windowing and other tricks the R1 does... oh well, maybe I'll stick with a 2/3" Scarlet. When I have the money i could buy an additional FF35 Scarlet System for the cool VistaVision-like look for most shots and use the 2/3" for slow-mo stuff and as a B-cam

ANOTHER EDIT (Nov 14): Oh look, S35 and FF35 can do what I assume is windowed higher frame rates, up to 60fps.
