  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Scarlet Questions with Joseph Hutson... Take 2.

Do the Scarlet Red Mini primes breathe ?

Does the Red zoom breath on Scarlet ? Im assuming but may be wrongly there will be a removal version of the zoom lens too ?

I'm sure they are both great lens options, and I would imagine the breathing is minimum if any.

Its an important question for us as we would like to consider using them for 3D. Breathing or lack of is really important.

RED has said repeatedly that there will not be a removable version of the Scarlet fixed lens, and that there are no plans for RED mini zooms at this time.

The Scarlet Fixed is the zoom lens for Scarlet - the entire fixed brain costs less than a decent zoom lens,

The Fixed Scarlet's (what I call, the F-Scarlet) foundation is built on the lens itself. It sits considerably deep within the body itself. So much so, that the plane of the sensor is almost at the very back of the F-Scarlet.

Notice the mark above the "D" in RED here, where the sensor is lined up...

This is why it's impossible to make an electronic lens (comparable to what is in the FIXED Scarlet) for the CINEMA Scarlet.

Wow that is beautiful! Yup thats it...i'm getting this camera!

What is the resolution of the sensor of the fixed and 2/3rds mountable, has the max resolution increased beyond 3K?

Yes, and no. 3K is still the ceiling. However, Graeme has developed a better demosaic algorithm that renders more detail than was previously possible. About 80%. To my understanding this has been incorporated in the RED One, Epic, and Scarlet.

Jarred, is there any chance of adding a Facebook style 'Like' button on the forums to work with users post's, so that people can 'Like' comments, so we don't clog up the board with pointless replies like this one?!

Jarred. I think that is a great idea too. If you can have drop down options to tag, like "liked answer" and "liked question", then you can just search the thread for these. It would be good if the search could return full posts with quoted texts to see what was answered, without going through the pages. I've just tried to search the thread for Jarred Land and was given an abbreviated list of your responses without the quoted text you were answering, without an option to put them in date order, so then went through manually.

SSD.. with an optional CF to SSD adapter for people that want to still use CF cards. This is just one of the changes to the original posted package.

The SSD cards, can we just use normal sata ones? They are cheap now, compared to when the scarlet was originally to come out.

Thanks Kyle, but I still would prefer to hear Jarred's official comment wherever they have taken advantage of the development delay and increased the resolution over the spec meant for two to three years ago, as a nice surprise.

To be fair...if you are wanting more than 3K and/or more than 2/3"...you are wanting an EPIC-S.

Funny when people complain about the Scarlet "only" being 3K, when 3K is still more resolution than almost any other camera out there (excluding Red One and Epic of course). Like Michael said, if for your delivery you need more than 3K, than there is the Epic Line of Cameras. To get 3K resolution and the huge number of included additional features for under $10,000, that's incredible, even all this time later since the initial announcement/delays.

For much of Scarlet's extended development cycle people were asking for lower resolution , i.e 2k, and cheaper cost. A camera that equals the resolution of an ARRI Alexa for less than $10k is pretty amazing IMO. All of the most recent samples from working production prototypes that have been shown have been 3k. I doubt they will go back to the drawing board at this point for the first Scarlets. Who knows what may be coming for future generations though?
I've said it before. I'd love to see an 8MP QHD 3840x2160 true super 16mm sized sensor in a Scarlet interchangeable. This could be done on the same 3.3u sensor fab as the 2/3" version. That would make a lot of sense as the next Scarlet upgrade model, but the price would likely be close to an Epic-S so it might not make as much market sense other than to have a high resolution S16mm film replacement that could use the same lenses. High quality compact optics for light weight mobility and extremely efficient field production would be the advantage. The series Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was shot on S16mm film with one camera and a single zoom lens.
