Mathematics - the surprising novelty (and practical) value of SQRT(x^2)

Every now and then I try to improve my knowledge of maths. I sometimes play with Grapher, the successor to Graphing Calculator. I discovered by accident something very interesting, if completely obvious to those who are more mathematically minded. You would think that the square root of x...

Video - 'Cassettes - better than you don't remember'

Cassettes actually had pretty good sound quality, especially if you used Dolby S. (22:45)

Hollywood: Focus Pullers call for flash strike

Copy-pasted from the In Hollywood newsletter: --- The Focus Pullers Association, a branch of the IATSE, called for a flash strike this morning. The issue was ignited by the growing number of cinematographers who have started to prefer cameras with larger sensors, coupled with lenses with wider...

Moving away from MacOS - sort of... and I have a question about game demos

My desktop computer is a trashcan Mac Pro. It's the best desktop computer ever designed. And, it's American made, too. But... as far as MacBooks go, no thank you. Not only are they made in China, they don't have enough ports. Remember when Apple laptops had all the ports? So, for the desktop, I...

Foveon musings, and why it might matter to cinema

I have recently purchased an old Sigma DSLR with a Foveon sensor, an SD14. I can't make specific comments about that camera yet. But I can say a few things about Foveon RAW files which I have downloaded and examined. 1. Innate saturation is so high that you might want to occasionally turn it...

    The future is analog...

Analog computers, that is! (21:41) Of course we all know that image sensors are analog devices, too. In fact, they can't be anything else, on account of being transducers. Data might be digitised but data collection is always analog.

Films Shot on RED Play a Big Role in Giant Screen Cinema Association’s 2022 Film Expo

Films Shot on RED Play a Big Role in Giant Screen Cinema Association’s 2022 Film Expo https://www.broadcastbeat.com/films-shot-on-red-play-a-big-role-in-giant-screen-cinema-associations-2022-film-expo/ The giant screen is the future of cinema. That's my pet theory. Red is well positioned.

    Please recommend a 4K TV

I have asked this before, but I can't find the thread. Someone posted a website with extensive TV reviews but I have forgotten the name. In the longer term I want a Loewe Bild 2 or 3 TV. But, for now, due to budget limits, I think I want a Sony. Of course I do need to go out and see them for...

    Looking ahead at camera technology

Inspired by Rand's recent post about DSLRs going away, I thought I'd put down some thoughts about where cameras are going from here. You'd have to be in denial to believe that DSLRs were never going to be supplanted (especially for video!). But the replacement of DSLRs was an easy one to make...

Digital broadcast TV was a big, big mistake

About 20 years ago, give or take, digital TV services began in Australia. Most people just got a set top box, and a small minority of us still have HDTV receivers because we haven't upgraded our TVs yet. I personally don't watch TV, but it's handy nonetheless. Eventually people upgraded their...

    Noteworthy: Netflix's updated camera requirements

Red Raven gets the tick of approval, which is great for lower budget productions. No Red One or DSMC1 though. I can understand the Scarlet-X being rejected, sort of, but the Epic 5K should still be approved, don't you think? ARRI Alexa and Mini are out. LF, LF Mini and A65 are the only models...

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/jurassic-world-dominion-prologue-opening-scene-1235052235/ This film was shot on both film and digital (Red Komodo) by Jonathan Schwartzman. The man has taste!

Industrial design excellence - the Philips CD 304

It's beautiful, isn't it? Even the controller is nice to look at. It's a shame that the bold geometric approach from the 1980s morphed into a same-same ultra-safe approach in the 1990s. We forget, I think, just how good design was back then. Another example: think of the Nikon F4 which debuted...

    Quick question about Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray

Given that technology has moved on since PAL and NTSC... are HD and UHD discs delivered in the original frame rate of the title? E.g. is the disc of Citizen Kane a 3:2 pulldown, or is it actually 24fps? If so, are the TVs designed to accept arbitrary frame rates (to a point)?

A light field lens that can fit onto any camera

This lens apparently allows light field capture with a conventional sensor. Great idea, but I will leave it to you to determine whether you prefer this approach or Lytro's approach. https://www.k-lens-one.com/en/home

A ten year-old compact system camera is better than your smartphone

Well, probably. There are two types of old tech: that which retains its natural superiority; and that which really should be retired. But, it depends what you're comparing to. Smartphones are great and all that, but those photosites are very, very small. You can't compute your way out of that.
