Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
It occurs to me since 2012 the Oscars has given "Best Cinematography" honors to very VFX/Post-Heavy movies.
Why is this happening, and what does this mean?
See list below:
2012: LIFE OF PI, Claudio Miranda
Completely shot on green screen (presumably flat), with lighting and VFX all done in...
So I made this little chart for myself, and thought I'd share (see chart below). Feel free to double-check the math, but I think i'm right!
My reason for doing this is simple. In an earlier thread, Marcus Friedlander very smartly said:
And that really made me think. Because he has a point...
As some of you know, I QUIT MY JOB TODAY!!!
I've been a freelance creative for 12 years, cranking out campaigns at A+E: for History Channel, Lifetime, A&E, FYI, LMN, H2, & History En Espanol.
That ends today.
What started with a dream, buying a Scarlet MX in 2013, has become a reality in...
Anyone know more details about how this was shot?
Love the look.
Know it's Alexa, and Season 1 used a lot of Jib for movement.
Anyone know what lenses? And filtration?
Has such a distinct look - love to know more about it!!
thanks!
Here's another campaign we shot recently on Dragons, with Nick and Drew Lachey!
This was a large series of branded spots, designed to be "sponsored" by advertisers, for A&E's show "Lachey's Bar".
We shot on two Dragons at 6K HD, on green screen, w/ Contax primes (50mm and 100mm) and Classic...
Question for the RED team.
Now that RAVEN I/O package is coming with the DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander.
Is this something MAGNESIUM/CARBON packages could include as well?
Would be great for Magnesium and Ravens to have matching I/O hardware straight out of the box!
A+E has been a client for over 12 years, and that trust leads to a myriad of terrific opportunities.
Last month, we were invited to film with over a 1000 employees, and shoot/produce TWO of the company's "tapes" for their annual EMPLOYEE MEETING.
This is sort of the in-house Oscars at A+E, and...
We just saw DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL (a 2015 Sundance "darling"), and I have to say it's FANTASTIC!
I was also very happy to find out it was shot on Epic (MX or Dragon?), by one of my fave DP's right now, Brandon Trost (who regularly shoots on RED).
Looks like Brandon shot on Panavision C...
Hey gang, I went through the DSMC Media Operation Guide, and pulled the lowest COMPRESSION LEVELS for both WEAPON CARBON and WEAPON MAGNESIUM (across all mags).
Below you'll find a list with both cameras compared.
The results are interesting:
1) MAGNESIUM is not as different to CARBON as one...
Ok, see this fantastic post from Jarred below:
It appears RED is open to creating an extra RAVEN package, if clear need/demand is demonstrated.
Lets start making a LIST of what people would like to see, and on FRIDAY I'll make a poll, cool?
Here's some requests that have already come up:

Have you guys seen this?

Genus is coming out with an electronic, variable ND...which sounds a lot like what Sony is also including in the FS5...
With the 2015 Emmys now behind us, I think it bears noting that...in such a crowded marketplace (ALEXA, RED, F55, C500/300, etc), RED was well represented amongst nominees for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series (generally the two most prestigious categories for shows)...
Hey everyone. Incredibly proud to tease this recent shoot of ours, a :60 Vignette about PAWN SACRIFICE (shot by Bradford Young of Selma, Ain't Those Bodies Saints, A Most Violent Year...and directed by Edward Zwick of Glory, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, etc).
This was a project for History...
This has nothing todo with RED or cinematography, but I just have to share. Sometimes you get these amazing gigs, with amazing clients, that let you go pedal to the metal, everyone's on board, and it turns out fantastic (for the clients, for the fans, for yourself).
This is one of those...
Hey everyone, quick question.
For smaller jobs, what's everyone's favorite prompter app for Ipad?
We've had success with this Ikan prompter
And though the Ikan app is fine, def curious if some have had success with other Ipad prompter software that may be easier/more streamlined.
thanks!!
Hey guys, one of my favorite young creatives is moving to Colorado in 4 weeks!
She's been working at History Channel for 3 years. She's brilliant. And wants to stay in tv/broadcast/production when she moves out.
If anyone has any leads, contacts or suggestions...please feel free to PM me!

Could anyone recommend some curved track that would work well with a Dana Dolly?
For example, would this work?

Can't believe we're not talking more about this!!!
STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON (Shot on Dragons by Matty Libatique) just DESTROYED the box office this weekend! 5th largest August opening of ALL TIME!!
As more Dragon/Weapon features roll out, I'm sure this may become a more common event...but just...
Hey everyone, here's History's ALONE cinema piece - in theatre's NOW across the country!!! Many of you may have seen this in front of JURRASIC WORLD over past two weekends!!
