  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Geez, I can do both of those things right now with my manual lenses. What I need is WIRELESS control of the focus for steady work.

Ahhhh. . . I guess that's why they call it "the bleeding edge."

Nothing new at the west front. Erik said he will stop making predictions of when and guess that's what this is about.

It sounds like there are some probably small technical issues detected by those having already the mount and this has delayed the shipment?

Jay Erik is not so poor; He has our money :-)

Erik's silence is usually an indicator that he's perfecting something and doesn't want to be distracted...

Or maybe he is simply trying to fix the basic futures.

Yeah, I'm glad he's ok, but I'm also sad you guys are being put on this roller coaster.

You can hate this process, I don't think anyone would fault you for that. But in the end, these things will be finished, and you will all be happy.

The question is when will it really be finished. I guess you'll know that when it happens. Sucks, but that seems to be the case. I suppose you only have two choices, Deal with it, or leave.

Yikes.

Jarred has confirmed on another thread that build 16 is already able to handle /i data from the lens. Is the Birger mount able to take advantage of this? Do the mounts currently/soon shipping include the cable for feeding lens info to the camera?

15 of these are on RED cameras.

So we should have a lot o video ft. Birgher at work!
Maybe also a video on how good and accurate is to pull focus with it!

Links?

I totally understand your desire to run ... but Birger is not even walking at the moment ! The last Erik update suggested a heating issue (apparently fixed) ... we all know REDs run hot, why was the mount not bench tested on a hot plate ?*!
He tells us they have parts and people, but still no news ... how long does it take ???? Some folk have paid in full and we still have NO IDEA when the mounts are going to ship.

Lets just take stock of where we are ... approx 15 Birger RED Canon EF mount units are out there in the field and we have NO SIGNIFICANT feedback, no clips and no update from Erik as to what the last delay is all about. Nobody has actually said that the aperture is controlled via the mount, as opposed to PC driven. For example, how do people know what aperture they are using ? does one just count the number of clicks up or down ?
It's as if they are all under NDA's / beta testers ...

Now the lens i-data surfaces ... s**t ! Yet another distraction (excuse ?) for the mount to get delayed. I sincerely hope that this (future) feature on the mount will be firmware 'activated' and does not require another engineering re-think. Given passed performance of communication between Red & Birger, I do wonder how long it will take for the Canon lens data to be recorded in 'i-data standards' (whatever the formats / protocols are).

Hmmm ... it would be soooooooooooo good to get a REAL WORLD update ... :help:

I'm telling you. . . that Nikon mount rocks. We shot a full feature on our two REDs this past summer, and every frame was shot using Doug's Nikon mount. I just today ordered his DX version. I'm a real fan. It is worth every penny.

I DO hope that the Birger/Canon comes out, but I'm telling you, I know what you mean about not being able to wait forever. I'd have had to shoot that film with a pinhole RED without the Nikon. I just don't have the coin to buy PL mount lenses.

Stephen

Thanks,

Just curious. If I wanted to update some day to the DX version, do I have to pay full price or is there any update option?

The feature you shot, how was focusing with the Nikkon lenses. Did you have to do some pull focus? And if so, did you have some adapter?

Now a question for everyone.

How do you guys approach pulling Zoom with your still lenses? Any home device that would make the Zooming a little bit easier. I think I've read some where that you can buy some tool for oppening jars, and you can attach it to the zoom to ease the "pull zoom" acction.

I agree. Cosidering the Birger Mount was announced on these boards. Then the people who ordered a Red mount must visit the forum. No feedback from anyone, very odd.

Hi there, Ivan. . .

Oh, yeah, focus pulling is a breeze with the Nikon mount, just like it is on any manual-focus Nikon camera. Sometimes we used a follow-focus. Sometimes we just grabbed the lens and ran with that (it worked very well both ways). We did have one zoom for the film, but Nikon zooms do not hold focus over very long zoom ranges, hence the reason people of means by PL mount lenses. But we pull focus all the time on our film. It works great. Some lenses breathe more than others, but it was never distracting.

Thanks Stephen,

Can't wait to get my Nikon mount..... And maybe sometime next year my Birger mount? :sarcasm:  :waaa:

I did the same thing - RED Nikon mount with a slug of Zeiss ZF's, but bought a Nikon to Canon adapter so when the Birger finally ships my investment in ZF's will still very much be usable, but I'll also be able to use all of my "L" lenses. I don't see much of a downside. I'd love for Birger to be shipping right now, but wouldn't bank on it and shelf your RED while waiting.

Frankly spoken.
Birger can be glad that nobody else see the needs ( so early) to produce an alternate intelligent mount because to be patient is the good side of all peopledealing with red. And of cause now its to late to jumb in.
I am working as an expat in China and I can promise you. It needs max 6 month to develop here a inteligent mount either Canon or Nikon and having after 6 month 2000 of them.
BTW to make a dumb one cost you here about 6 weeks
Lets face it
to develop a whole cam from zero to that state is geniouse. But to build a simple piece of intelligent metal could not need 18 month.

Just back from IBC. No Birger in sight, but the IMS on display and shipping. Beautiful workmanship. Did I mention that it is shipping and has been so for a while. Accepts not only Canon, Nikon and PL lenses, but pretty much any mount.

Jarred, would this be a good time to bribe you with some more chocolate?
