  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Any idea how to mix the 23.98P from RED with the 30P from the TX1 cameras? We plan on using cinema tools to slow down the 30P to 29.97. But it seems that then 29.97 is not playing nicely with the 23.98 from the RED.

Hi Mike,

There is no easy way to add 30p material (or 29.97p) into a 23.98p (or 24p) project that will look good. Frames will be dropped to change the timebase and playback will be jerky as a result. If your finish is HD for broadcast I would marry everything into a 1080i timeline, which plays both 30 and 24 well (although, don't count on Final Cut to correctly add pulldown to your 24p material). If your intent is filmout, then you must conform everything to 24p (or 23.98). I would recommend slowing down any non-sync 30p material to 23.98 using cinema tools. It's a mild slowdown that can work well for many MOS shots. For sync material, the only method that I know of that doesn't yield jerky results is to re-render the material with software that can interpolate 30p as 24p. The optical flow feature in Apple Motion can do it as can the retimeing feature in an Avid Nitris. FCP can't do it. The procedure is to first conform your 30p to 24p using cinema tools (thus slowing it down), then bring it into Motion (or Avid) and speed it up by 125% using optical flow (thus bringing it back to realtime but with only 24 frames). And if you think rendering red footage is slow, wait until you try optical flow! You'll only want to do it at the picture lock stage, so in the meantime, you'll have to let final cut butcher it. Or better yet, work in 1080i. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like a great project!

Birger was great. I decided to wait til I could use all my Canon lenses I already had rather than investing in the RED lenses. (I have been in line for the 18-85 RED since the beginning) I am grateful that I was able to shoot the doc out at BM with all my Canon glass. Thank you RED and Birger for working together.

We shot mainly on my:
17-55 f2.8 IS
100-400 f4.5-5.6 IS
10-22 f3.5-4.5
50mm f1.4

I had the 50 and the 17-55 geared at Duclos and we used a Chorziel FF from indierentals.

They all worked great. I bough screw on ND filters for the 58mm and the 77mm lenses. we mostly had the ND .9 and a Pola on at all times during the day ASA 320 Redcode 36 at 4K 16x9.

the 10-22 is so wide that when you stach both a ND and the Pola on, you get some vignetting. So we would either stop down and remove the ND, or zoom in to avoid the vignett.

Clay's camera had the Nikon mount and a set of Nikon lenses.

now....... more frame rate/resolution/RED Rushes/ prores drama. yay!

The best Burning Man shot ever!

Could be shot with Birger EF on RED (!?) :w00t: .

Sure hate asking this here - but, Erik, any chance I'll see my mount in time to have it installed by next Friday 9/19?

all of my flickr photos are shot on my Canon 40D. once we figure out how to deal with out footage, I will post some RED screen caps and some footage.

How many mounts are expected to ship this week?

Mike,

It would be awesome, and really help the Birger cause here, if you could simply pick a favorite clip or two, with a nice rack focus or something, export it from RedCine or RedAlert and post it-- maybe while you're figuring out how to handle your post nightmare issues.

....Or even upload a couple of R3D files directly.

With Erik sending all these mounts out, how come I don't see more "I got my Birger Mount!"

I know there must be at least a handful that wouldn't be so busy with the mount not to get excited enough to give a yell over here.

Or did I miss them?

(Has there been any moving images sted that was shot with the birger mount and canon glass?)

Im gonna have to cancel my Birger reservation, my camera is coming soon, and I am gonna sell my Canon glass and buy Nikons.
Maybe ill go back to Canon, when IMS is certified and the EF mount is Birger'ed.
I just cant justify this uncertainty. I got work to do.
I have been impressed with the Nikon results from other users so I think the difference is negligible, the quality of pictures will be there, now we must concentrate on the story and content, thats been neglected for too long.
It was a pleasure being part of this legendary thread. :))))

Yeah I know,
But the result will still take a few months, plus IMS doesnt have a smart EF mount yet does it?
I cant keep changing aperture with a seperate eos body, not for my projects.
Ive spent too much time worrying about all of this, need to draw the line.
I rather use the red nikon mount as a doorstop IN a few months than have the red body collecting dust for the NEXT 2 or 3 months. hehe
cheers

I am really hoping to hear something very soon. I have a scheduled shoot next weekend. It is the first shoot where I had planned on the mount being in hand. I called Eric (the only time) a few weeks back. He thought I could depend on it by Sept 1st. Obviously, a gremlin has popped up. I really hope it can be squared away quickly, for all of our sakes.

Still pulling for you Erik.

And I'm sure you know that the Nikon mount isn't a smart one either

it is indeed,
I dont plan on getting G lenses anyway, the fact that they and EF lenses dont have an aperture ring is a bit unfortunate.
Even the modification isnt ideal. its a great solution for sure, shame the ef's dont have such a simple k.i.s.s solution. hehe
have fun at IBC, must be long train ride!
might pop in too as im only down the road.
