Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Mike,

I'm waiting for Birger too.

Early order from November 2007, number 107...etc.

Also I will try out to get Birger mount on IMS development.

Till today on RED with IMS I tested swapping the following mounts with lenses: PL, Leica M, Leica R, Nikon F, Zeiss M42, Hasselblad-Zeiss (EOS adapter) and even Sigma EOS at night when wide open aperture works well.

Must say again that I'm in a DREAMLAND now with IMS on RED.

Have a look at the footage HERE>>>

Again, just so it is clear. Birger's mount does not void RED's warranty--official word from RED, confirmed by Jarred. With Birger's mount, your warranty is intact--you are good to go.

IMS currently voids RED warranty--official word from RED, confirmed by Jarred. You stick on IMS mount and have an unrelated audio problem or problem with your lcd screen or flaw with a button--you pay for it. That's a big problem right now--potentially more expensive than the cost of the IMS mount. With IMS' current mount you are on the hook for any issues with your camera. Like everyone, I'm looking forward to this situation changing!!

By the way, thanks Sanjin for pushing the IMS option for all of us--much appreciated!! Good photos of the moon too: great stuff.

Well, that's not true.

Please do not write or claim about something that you even didn't see or try out in a real world test.

That's confusing Redusers and make a bad reputation about IMS.

I could consider all that notion as your personal speculation.

Terribly sorry, Paul.

This is great... but just so everyone knows, as soon as you, or anyone else does this modification, your warranty is immediately void. ( already happened to the guy here who donated his camera for the test  )
In case anyone is wondering... the P+S technic mount came in, and it has no allocation for the /i pin cable whatsoever, so they are going back to the drawing board to resolve that issue.

As of right now, the P+S adapter defiantly voids the warranty, as the only way to make it work is to actually cut off the /i cable.

Sanjin, I know you've mentioned that P+S has addressed the /i cable issue, but until we hear otherwise from Jarred, the situation seems to remain as stated above and as Paul said: installing the IMS mount from P+S will automatically void your global camera warranty — which means that any and all problems, even those unrelated to the mount, will not be covered. You really should stop asserting otherwise.

I'm not talking so much about warranty issues (because I do not make RED warranty rules anyway).

I'm talking, testing and experiencing (stored) i/cable with IMS installation on my RED.

No issues with stored i/cable on my RED till today.

Not to be a pain in the A$%^ But it doesn't matter if the Birger doesn't void the warranty. If we don't get the mounts it doesn't matter the warranty, because the warranty will be expired anyway.

We have people that have their Reds and haven't been able to use them yet, because the mount is not ready. We have people that have projects coming up like Mike and have been offering help in an effort to speed things up, we have people that have been begging to get something even if it is a dumb mount, and we have a great engineer that has been encountering a lot of problems designing a product in an open forum.

I truly believe that Birger is a great person and a great engineer. I truly believe that the product can be an amazing addition to the RED and will be an amazing addition to independent filmaking. But I truly believe that Eric is also an extremely bad communicator and an expert to make people go nuts.

When you are in an urge to get something important for you and you keep getting incoherences, that's really frustrating; "shipping next week" and 7 months pass and nothing shipped, messages like everybody with 107 will get their tracking number, and then you see people postings like "I have a 107 and never got my tracking number" it is very easy to get extremely frustrated.

I don't have the patience that many other people in this forum has. Aqua has been an amazing help for this and I think we all appreciate it and respect it. But after being in this forum for more than 10 months, I have to say that I have never had this much uncertainty with anything in my life. I am sure that probably soon we'll all be happy and love what Birger made for us, but as for now, it is extremely frustrating.

I have to start a project October first and I have absolutely no clue whether I will get my Birger. At this point there is no video, no images, nothing about the new mount. It seems that there is only one mount out there somewhere. Believe it or not, I feel we have more information from a guy who basically just posted some videos about a "smart" EOS mount that may or may not be controlled by an iphone.

I might be wrong but I have a pretty decent certainty that I will my REd by Mid - late September. I am pretty sure I won't get the updated sound board or the 16 GB memory cards or the EVF but when the camera comes I can easily take measurements. But with the Birger mount I am completely lost and have ABSOLUTELY no clue of what's going on.

Please Eric don't take this personal, as I really appreciate your effort. You have been communicating more often and that's great. To be honest I CAN'T WAIT TO GET YOUR GREAT MOUNT and pay you the rest of the money. It will be the happiest $1400 I've ever paid. I guess it is just difficult for me to be patient and think that I have to spend $500 in a Nikon mount + extra in nikon lenses and then get a Birger mount right after.

I apologize for the long post and negative tone. I am just frustrated and stressed. I might be the only one. But when I hear about the Warranty thing, it just makes me laugh. We still don't quite know what's going to happened when RED changes the i/cable in the mount.

You are not the only one !

I gave up completely, got my deposit back and went with a second hand set of manual Nikon lenses and Doug's dumb mount.

I will now wait until the Birger product is real before I sell the Nikon lenses and move back to my Canon glass.

Getting great results with the manual Nikon's by the way.

When you think about "ALL" and I mean "ALL" this mount is going to do for us, it's like some dream come true. But, it obviously is no small feat, and being that Erik is a perfectionist, we can have some confidence that when it ships it will work. We are at the beginning now of shipping. Next week we will here more about who has received the first units. I talked to Erik today, he was in the office testing units before shipping. Let's take a deep breath and prepare for the arrival of our mounts. They are coming.

Just keep in mind that the latest delay to the Birger mount (which is now starting to ship) was to get approval from RED,

This is not a fair statement... We waited weeks to get a mount to test, and after we finally recieved it, it only took 2 days to turn around for me to make a judgement.

The mount has once again changed after we gave approval... and we had nothing to do with that.

Absolutely, you guys did lightning fast turnaround on your end. I didn't mean to say that RED was holding up approval (nor was I aware that Erik had made further changes). I was just responding to Sanjin's saying the IMS mount was a viable option "today," when it hadn't (to my knowledge) been approved.

New Birger mount related threads

I miss that all-too brief time when Erik regularly posted here and on unrelated threads. So for now it is back to patience...

Anyway, to save us all some time, here's a novel concept:

We start two new threads, one for "Birger speculation" one for "Birger frustration venting" and keep this one clear for posts with factual information.

For all your speculation needs go to Birger Lens Mount speculation.

Feeling emotional, go to Birger Lens Mount frustration venting.
