  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Hello,

The RED Nikon mount. Works great!

Best,

ATF

Kris, it's anywhere between "any day now" and "who knows". This mount seems to be perpetually delayed. The mount will be a game-changer when - and I have to stress the when - it gets out.

That said, there has been talk of people cancelling their orders, as they got tired of waiting and waiting and waiting.

It's a pity, as I see a lot of good-will going to waste.

I'm awaiting an answer to a Red/Contax mount. If the Birger is not out by the time I get my camera, I will go that route.
Patience is a virtue. On the other hand, there's no similar offer. RED/Contax either.

Before you jump ship, consider that the birger mount does more then the other mounts that have been mentioned... and possibly will do more. FYI.

Granted. But it doesn't do anything until it's released.

Jason and Akabaka both are totally right.

But we live in the real world, and many need a working solution now. Of course build 16 will be better than build 15. But 15 is available now, so that's what everyone is using. Of course a 128gig CF module will be better, but it just isn't available yet. Of course the Redrock matte box will be great, but for the time being people have to find other solutions. Of course the smart Birger will be better than say the Red Nikon or a custombuilt Contax mount. But if you need a kit today, then Birger unfortunately is not an option. And if you have a shoot next week or next month, then unfortunately past performance would tell me to not depend on the Birger either.

Not to get me wrong, and as I have said earlier, once the Birger is out, I am sure it will be a great addition to almost any Red kit. And it will be a game-changer and I am looking forward to third/fourth party solutions/add-ons.

My camera won't come until late this year, so as said I am confident that the Birger will be out by then. But I do sense that some people, having waited for many months, having been unable to use their paid-for camera, having been told many times over that the mount would ship any week, day, minute now (just look at the Birger Watch thred), are getting slowly frustrated, and are looking for other solutions.

No one know this better then me. :)

I have a Red One now. It's sitting in my closet safe. Sometimes I take it out to admire it. Sometimes, if it's windy, I'll take it out and put it on my papers to prevent them from being blown away... or I'll put it up against the door so it won't slam shut.

I have some productions that need to get done. If Birger takes too long, I'll rent a lens. Anyone who is a waiting customer or contemplating a Birger mount all have one thing in common... we can't afford cinema lenses at 20k a pop... or even a Red lens at less then 10k.

So at this "level", the birger mount is going to be the best. All the others are "dumb" mounts. Even not mentioning follow focus, blue tooth remote, downloading of lens specs, there is talk about the mount remedying potential breathing problems. Sounds like a pretty "smart" mount to me.

So if you have enough money (but not enough for a Red lens), to buy another mount now and also buy the birger later, then go ahead. But what about the lenses you invest in as well? I've already got a 24-70L and 70-200L.

Frankly, even in my position of being dead in the water, I want Birger to take his time to get it right. (I put my order in last year, by the way) What's worse then waiting is having to send it back because it wasn't done right in the first place.

This is new technology folks. Erik isn't Tony Stark with a facility that can build an Iron Man suit in a few hours. (Although Erik's girlfriend did tell me at NAB he wears a Superman costume whenever they... okay, I better not get into that). :)

By the way, I met Erik only once at NAB, talked briefly, and tested my 70-200 and 100mm f2 on the mount. Awesome (the mount that is... I don't know Erik but I'm sure he's a good guy too.)

I'm just posting this to provide some counterbalance (and if I post another "I got my Birger Mount!" just because I'm bored and want to have some fun, everyone here will hunt me down and lynch me.)

Ha... yes waiting is difficult if you have your camera, but like you I think we should all take a chill pill and hope that when the mount does come out that it will be rock solid.

Hey Erik,

Before you get around to the nikon mount, can you apply your engineering genius and create an automatic focusing system for my birger canon mount setup?

Thanks a bunch.

Just kidding, nikon people, just kidding!

look I agree, i don't want to disturb the genius at work. I get that it takes time to invent stuff. I'm very pro erik. I just need to know realistically what we're dealing with. If it's 2 more months, no problem I'll buy the red nikon mount and I'll use my nikon 50mm 1.4 to learn the camera while I'm waiting. But if I order the nikon mount and the birger ships a week later I've just wasted $500. If it's 6 more months then I'll get the nikon mount, sell all my canon glass, buy all nikon glass, buy that amazing D3 and when the birger nikon mount comes out, I'll buy that too. I think erik's product is amazing, I just wish I knew when this thing realistically was coming. I know better than to plan on unreleased technology, but when I faxed my order in november, it said Jan 15th delivery. And I don't mind the 6 month wait. I just wish there was a way to establish when this would actually be delivered. Erik, we can handle the bad news. If you're a month or 2 away, please just tell us. Be a pessimist. Tell us the bad news.

I really, really don't think it's that far off. (I know that's been said a million times by everyone else). But he's already built a few new ones... well... sort of. We saw pictures of the parts, right? :)

Hold off, man. Don't do it! Don't jump! :)

Erik, help the poor guy out. Throw him a line! A bit of news?

I spoke to Erik this morning and he said he will be posting some good news at some point today. Stay tuned...

Just to let everyone know, Erik is not just any engineer. He's a Star Trek Engineer, 1st Class.

Right now, he's caught in a time paradox.

So I thought it was just common sense that this Thursday was last week's next Thursday.

Wait, this Thursday is and will still be last week's Thursday's next Thursday even when we reach this Thursday's next Thursday.

If the crazy amount of views and replies on this thread is any indication...

...either Erik is going to be a billionaire...

...or his customers are neurotic.
