  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

V-RAPTOR Beta Build 1.3.1 June 30, 2022

So the camera no longer supports the DSMC3 monitor???

It still supports the monitor. In the 1.3 beta the camera can now update the monitors F/W. Previously you had download the monitor's F/W, put it on an SD card and then update the monitor.

To enable this feature you need to do one more SD card update on the monitor and future monitor updates can be handled by the camera.

What this error message is saying is that A) The monitor is not on version 5.0 and B) For the camera to update the monitor, the monitor needs to be on at least version 5.0.

So the camera no longer supports the DSMC3 monitor???

The link Phil posted fixes the issue. SmallHD doesn't make their firmware versions very easy to find. I find their support instructions for how to install the update pretty unhelpful also. After I got the correct Firmware download - https://downloads.smallhd.com/firmware/red-touch - I went to the RED Support page for the monitor. That then took me back to SmallHD to find this - https://guide.smallhd.com/a/1478003-quick-start-guide - Sort of a circular solution.

I guess after this upgrade PageOS 5 the Raptor firmware can update the monitor.

Ok, cool, we are getting our Raptor this Thursday with the DSMC3 screen and the 4TB disks so will be super fun to test. Will be fun to compare with the Heliums and maybe even the Phantom VEO.

Best wishes,
Andreas

Heh. We haven't had to use disks since the RED One round here. Drives. Media. Mags. Flash. Anything but disks now for recording media.

Congrats on the V-Raptor.

And wow those disks could get hot when using prerecord! Don't touch hot. I think back to that every time I see the "hot media" warning when ejecting cards on V-Raptor. The cards only get warm in comparison.

Looking forward to your comparison/evaluation with VEO at 240fps Andreas. I'm using them both together on a shoot now.

VEO can trim shots which means not having to wade through extraneous recordings later, but that sure takes time when things are happening. Higher frame rates need more light which is a struggle in the circumstances here (forest) so the V-Raptor is getting a lot of use at 240.

Hi Michael! Always great to hear from you.
Yes will be super fun to compare. It is mostly because I'm curious. Veo has so much higher fps.
I noticed that the cards got really hot as well which worries me a bit. The way I got explained is that prerecord is not saved to disk but saved to internal ram instead so should protect the cards if that is true.

Yes the trimming is very nice on VEO, I have always wished we had that on the Red cameras. But VEO is otherwise much more fiddly to work with, you have so few seconds that you can record with.
Best of luck!
Also would be fun to compare with Helium, Canon R5 as well :) I'm also especially curious how Raptor behaves with the 50-1000.

Cheers,
Andreas

Lol, but can't deny that disks sounds cooler? I will dig up my old Commodore Amiga Floppy disks and insert oh yea.
Best,
Andreas

I've also encountered the monitor update issue, until I'm able to update it however I just dismiss the warning and go ahead using it as usual, no real issues after that. Sure a little jumpy but nothing unusable. anybody else get this too?

I had a beta firmware fail/issue on last nights shoot (pretty sure it was firmware related but testing further). Both the Camera and monitor both updated yesterday.
Issue is nothing displayed on the monitor (or recorded) when shooting directly into the sunlight AND overexposing (even a little). It started as a monitor glitch and I couldn't figure out what was going on until I could repeat the issue into the sun (turning away from the sun then into as well as stopping down and opening up the aperture). Is this issue only on the monitor or in the actual R3d clip when recording???

Appears to be a monitor dropout only. I've been trying to recreate it and it's not happening here. I'll take the camera outside tomorrow while I'm prepping and see what I can figure out.

I've tried monitor on full max, etc, with a blown out image and mine stays on for whatever reason.

I tried to reproduce this problem with our Raptor and 7" Touch (both updated) but it didn't black out. I really overexposed.
Was it happening while recording, or would it happen in standby as well?

Sorry Kevin but I could not reproduce the issue with mine ether. Im starting to feel it might be a monitor issue but still early in the testing phase. Have you plugged in a SDI monitor and seen if it duplicates the issue there or only on the RED monitor?

Custom menus greyed out... future thing or am I being stupid?

Im pretty confident that there is a lot to come with updates on our V Raptors and the Raptor XL. I cant believe they would leave anything behind when the Monstro is such a great camera seems logical that any and all from the Monstro would be on the latest greatest from RED..

If you are indeed talking about the "CUSTOM DISPLAY" submenu in the MONITORING menus ...

It is greyed out until you select "CUSTOM DISPLAY" as one of your SDI LOOK, then the corresponding submenu will be available and will let you select a custom (monitor specific) look ... COLOR SPACE, OUTPUT TONE MAP, HIGHLIGHT ROLL-OFF or DISPLAY PRESET but also a dedicated 3D LUT or CDL just for that monitor output...
