People keep saying that one of the reasons Adobe is doing this is to combat piracy. Yeah, right. If anyone, at Adobe or elsewhere, thinks this is actually going to stop piracy, or even have a noticeable impact on it, then LOL... that's all I have to say.

I would venture that it will actually increase piracy, as more people will feel justified to flip Adobe the bird... hard to inspire loyalty when your customers see your new pricing scheme as a cash grab.

Maybe Resolve could become the alternative, they are smart enough me think.

I'm certainly looking into it. It may well end up that the fact Resolve is being bundled with tyhe Blackmagic cameras is going to open up a whole new paradigm of lower budget post-workflows...

If their single app pricing were to stay at the introductory price and allow activation in less than 1 year contracts, that could be an alternative to some who are upset over forced subscriptions. Although this would still be a subscription, it would offer choice and I think give people a greater feeling of having control over the way they do business rather than having those decisions made for them by Adobe "Big Brother".

Edit: The question was if they have a legacy solution, and many sources show that there is a willingness to supply that kind of support. /edit

Adobe is planning to archive up to 5 previous app versions for CC users. Starting with CS6.

Thanks Brandon. Do you have a link that leads to the information?

1. I don't think Adobe much like Apple, consider filmmakers and videography professionals to be a large part of their revenue base. The creative cloud subscription will definitely appeal to the youtube, vimeo generation. Frankly speaking there are a lot more of them than US.
2. Adobe will take a lot of heat and bashing from filmmakers in the short run, but will soon grieve as their revenue streams dwindle as schools, businesses, government bodies, publishers etc realize the high cost of online license subscription. Remember Acrobat is their top selling product.
3. I spent 4 years hoping Premiere Pro would mature into a reliable NLE, I worked through all it shortcomings etc, but after the NAB 2012 release of CS6 I was so disappointed. I spent 4 months intensively learning Autodesk Smoke, and I was more amazed at Smoke's new NLE interface. Smoke has its own shortcomings, lack of a built in 3d and planner tracker etc, but a copy of Maya gives you Matchmover. Many have complained about Smoke's color grading tools, but after learning to you Resolve and FCP Baselight plug, I've figured out work-arounds and even discorded more creative ways to grade. Smoke is the real "Creative Production Premium Suite", offering yesterday what Adobe offers on a yearly upgrade basis.
4. Adobe is a big company with many products and solutions to offer. They might do well with CC, But quote me on this, "filmmakers and editors will flock to Lightworks (as soon as it becomes multi platform) Avid, and any other alternative solutions. Premiere on is own does not offer much, editing is clunky, color correction is garbage, 3rd party plugins choke etc. After Effects and photoshop just gets better and better, but one you use Smoke, you will be hard pressed to open AE for anything not even motion graphics.
5. As far as I'm concerned the CC subscription system is no different from the current system except for the monthly payment plan. Keeping my current desktop version of CS6 would be smarter than subscribing to the same software with very very little changes online monthly.

Yes people will think about other Nle.All over the world many people working without internet. In US and other developed countries very easy to get internet.but other side of the world I don't think so.if Adobe looking for world wide monthly subscription, that is Bullshitt .people will go with other way.See Apple just change there interface and work around in FCP many people go away from FCP.Including me.now the time to go away from Adobe also.Avid and Autodesk is smiling now.............

After Adobe's announcement, i had a discussion with my partners who are Adobe centric in all things. We took a look at Apples FCPX 10.0.8, it has native Red codec support up to 5k and playsback jut as fast as with PPro. It also has a HUD display of R3d debayer settings, making it the only direct in NLE tweaking R3D supported application. This is exciting. It also doe trans-codes to prores 4444 in the background so you can easily xml out to Smoke or Resolve for finishing.

Thanks Brandon. Interesting that I got not even my first questions from the support successfully answered. That (see quote) will ease my mind ;o)

Do you have a link that leads to the information?

Edit: sorry if I sound skeptical now, but didn't I felt pushed to update to CS6 last year, as there would be no update from earlier versions otherwise in the future, do I memorize this correctly? Well: There is no Cs7, no update. So, I feel like being pushed into a trap last June when I paid the upgrade to CS6 Master. Again, thanks for your answer, certainly a step further, I have send this to the support to verify it /edit

There are non-Adobe solutions if you really don't trust that they're going to preserve your prior version environments when you upgrade. If you have some PC Saavy then you could virtualize (called P to V) your Adobe machine prior to the CS7.8.9 upgrades and archive the VM's. Then if you need to revisit an old project you just spin up the appropriate VM and go. I've used this technique in the past and it works well if the machine isn't interfacing with hardware... disk space is cheap.

If CC is successful for Adobe, once the customer base is hooked they will easily be able to start jacking up the pricing. I am leaving Adobe Today!

I switched from FCP7 to CS5.5 and then to 6. But with this announcement, I may revisit LIGHTWORKS.
I trained on it back in the late 90's and still have my little red shark pin. Maybe it's time to take it out
and shine it up.

Thanks again Brandon, very nice of you. I agree the PR department of Adobe was not really successful communicating this.

It looks pretty clear that the overall consensus of this change has been negative for Adobe by the consumer and the stock market. They were at $48.01 a share when the market opened on Monday and are down to $43.96 so far today. A 6.35% drop in the last four days and it has dropped everyday since Monday. This is not huge yet, but considering that Adobe had had several straight months of positive growth shows that taking the choice away from the consumer may have been a wrong move not only for the consumer, but for their shareholders as well.

Honestly I'm really not understanding the fickle nature of this board sometimes :) Did anyone bother to read the Creative Cloud FAQ page? http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
Adobe has listened and made significant updates, improvements over the last few years to Premiere, AE, Prelude, SpeedGrade, etc offering you a full end to end solution, more so than the competitors, thats for sure. I for one love the CC and the flexibility it has to offer. Sure the cloud service isn't large enough to host large batch of R3D files, yet. Ask yourself two questions right now. Who else is offering that kind of space for the price? And, would you have the bandwidth to host those files in your cloud if Adobe gave you that option right now? Most of you don't. But even so, with the way Adobe has listened to us why wouldn't you give them the benefit of the doubt that a larger storage isn't on the horzon? I don't think Adobe has been buttering you all up the last few years with great software improvements and listening to your every need and desire to all of a sudden kick the rug out, stop giving you great, inventive new features, and lock you into a model you don't want or need.
How about a little benefit of the doubt here, guys and gals?

I wouldn't use their storage if they offered a Terrabyte. I think the problem with Adobe is that they are acting unilaterally to decide on a subscription for all their apps at a large price instead of allowing anyone to choose which apps they want for a smaller price... that plus many just do not like the idea of a never ending cost for using their apps. There are no options other than the size of the plan one requires.

@ mikeburton....If you ever intend hosting your R3D's in the cloud good luck .

IMO for media/film production the cloud in all its various guises is a crock. Have you read some of the comments on this or the other thread ? Do you really want to be "locked out" from using your own copyrighted material because of licensing error or that you paid your subscription in another currency than where you presently reside ? Do want to deal with call centre in India to try & regain access to your material on tight deadline ?

Yes Adobe has come up with some good tools but now just like their stock price they are dropping the ball .

Anyway .......I dont know what I complaining about we've all been & here before with the Apple FCP7 debacle .......& unfortunately Avid isn't looking too good either.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate how fast Adobe pushes updates and will use Premiere 5.5 as my NLE of choice, but this discourages me from relying as heavily on their apps.

Adobe forces you into a bundle with their cloud pricing model. I don't need the latest Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Prelude, etc. I'd rather pay for that bundle once rather than continue to pay for it the rest of my life.

I'll stick with CS 5.5 and Davinci Resolve. Blackmagic has kept up just as fast w/ Red updates + the added benefit that their updates are free.
