  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sensors...

I should have added "in my mind" there Les. But that's also the point I'm making as well. I've never seen a film scan at 6k that produced what we would consider pixel perfect resolution. It does produce a pretty solid 4k image when scaled down. There are many who feel Epic now at 5k already surpassed S35 resolution. Once Dragon lands we'll have a really great opportunity to do a great side by side against film.

Added that ISO 2000 is looking as good as ISO 800 noise I can't help but be very excited and optimistic.

VistaVision is the same as 8-perf FF35, 36mm x 24mm... Which is 1.5 : 0. So to move from 1.89 to 1.94 is not a move closer to VistaVision.

I forget that VV's maximum neg size is 1.5. I have never shot full frame VV. Most early VV cameras had a useable area of 36mm x 18.3mm yielding around 1.96. I shot a bit of VV (this was before DI days) and I always went with that aspect ratio (on the Wilcams and Fries VVs).
Best,
lael

I love the quote from Blade Runner

Teeny tiny pedantic correction. ;) Ratios are x : 1 not x : 0. (Although I'm sure everyone understood what was intended.) The ratio is equivalent to a fraction So 3/2 == 1.5/1.

1.5/0 would be an aspect ratio of ∞ since you can't divide by 0.

hmm

hmm

I wonder what glass I should buy... Just bought a used Scarlet and its in the mail... Was going to go with Nikon for the short term from my buddies collection, but long term I am not sure what PL glass to purchase... The glass just cannot keep up with Red these days!

I get this sneaky suspicion that Red is planning for the lens horizon of Monstro. They are just not often found wanting in the "thinking ahead" department.

K35 will cover. As will most longer s35 lenses. Panchros probably will. Maybe not the 18mm. They are .5mm below the image circle if I'm not mistaken.

Covering Dragon is one thing, covering Monstro is a whole other... I think I will wait for Red's new glass before getting any PL at all other then renting when needed...

I'm just curious when Red can tell more about the price of the Scarlet-X upgrade. It would be nice to know exactly how much you'll need to save in order to upgrade your camera, as I'm sure many of the Scarleteers don't get to these kind of money so easy.

Just be patient, i'm sure we will get the information when all the needed decisions have been made. Maybe at IBC? Maybe at the launch of the EPIC upgrade-program? Anyway, i'm sure we will get the information we need this year (Scarlet upgrades are planned for 2013).

Until then, start to save 6k and after that, just don't stop saving. ;) My guess is, with 10k you're probably save. Well, as long as there will be only one upgrade and no surprise in form of different upgrade-options or a new model between Scarlet-X and EPIC-X to which you could upgrade. Oh, someone better wake me up. ;)

That is why Jim and I are staying back during IBC.. there still is alot of work to be done before we can get Scarlet pricing. Don't worry, we will let you know well in advance.

I'm guessing that you'll have to buy a whole new Scarlet Brain to get the upgrade. My reasoning is this...The cost of Dragon upgrade for Scarlet will be more than $6000, which is almost the cost of a new Scarlet brain. It might just be easier and cheaper for RED to just let you trade in your old Scarlet for an upgraded Dragon Scarlet. But that's just my guess.

Typo, sorry.

Haha, no need to apologize, I just know that what "David Mullen says" (even as a typo) can start getting repeated. And then years down the road everyone is saying 1.85:0. :D

Feel free to offer a 'third way' as well. If it's not already in the cards I would like to be able to at least shoot 24p in 6k. Even if it cost an extra $1k-$2k. I don't need Epic Framerates and compression but a teensie tiny bit better would be worth a premium.

Hmm.. Can we use some "look around area" for black shading while the camera is rolling?

My guess would be that Red is trying to get natively as close to the 2:1 standard that Jim has every so often praised on the forums?

Was curious about these new sensor dimension numbers. When the Dragon was originally announced, we were given some preliminary specs for the sensor... 6K, 5 micron pixel size, 30mm x 15.8mm. Using these figures, the sensor tracked with the 1.89:1 aspect ratio being utilized on the Epic equipped with a MX sensor. 1.89 also fits nicely into DCI standards, all is well in the universe.

With the new information from Jim and Jarred of pixel dimensions of 6144 x 3160 for the Dragon, that now equals a 1.94:1 aspect ratio. No big deal, it could be for some look around area when framing, but then why bother getting an even 1K increment number horizontally (as Gavin pointed out) but not vertically... To fit the 1.89:1 standard, we would need vertical resolution of 3240 and a sensor height of 16.2mm...

Without having the sensor to fulfill the hunger in my heart, these numbers have to keep my mind occupied. Was just scratching my head over the new aspect ratio...
