  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stage 3, 3.5 and beyond...

No questions. I just say: Thank you! The upgrade-programm is great!

We promised to step up production. We have.

There are two paths... those that are upgrading and those that are new buying EPIC and Scarlet.

While Stage 3 and 3.5 are a priority for us... it will take time to notify, receive RED ONE trade-ins, examine the returned cameras and collect the funds for the EPIC upgrade. This process is one at a time. And we are on it.

In the meantime... we are producing a ton of EPICs. Rather than just sit on them until all the Stage 3 and 3.5's are finished... we are beginning to fulfill new orders. Makes sense.

This shouldn't be a surprise. Those that are trading in their RED ONEs (for full credit) have a program that is unprecedented in the industry. But to think that we won't continue our business until this process is done is unrealistic. We aren't going to hold orders for new cameras while the upgrade process is in process as long as we have sufficient stock.

Stage 3 and 3.5 will not be held up. But neither will new orders while we have cameras.

Questions?

Jim

Hi Axel,

Yes that works fine. When powered by Red Brick it shows as DC voltage and you can hot remove the Brick and it just switches to the RedVolt in the sidehandle. I have an ET battery plate that clamps to a 19mm rod - but better, it also clamps to a tripod leg and that's how I use it all the time - makes less clutter on the camera. Personally, I don't think I'm going to need the Quad battery unit as I much prefer using the Red Bricks.

John

A reasonable solution...

Hey all RED ONE trade-in customers:

Go and buy a 2B-1B cable to get your RED Bricks / Battery Plate connected to the EPIC. Make sure you have the Rods solution up and ready for the EPIC to mount the battery plate.

THAT makes your EPIC usable.

2B-1B cost US$190,
Why not simply buy this for $299 (should be available soon)

My point is that I'd rather have continued using a system that works for me (the Redone) until I could have a fully functioning Epic. That choice should be mine. I personally don't have the time to source and subrent gear to make the Epic work. I am busy being a DP. I would have rather waited until I could have the package that I thought I was getting.

Once again - I am not trying to appear ingrateful towards the upgrade program - but I would appreciate more information along the way. I personally would not have taken my Epic if I knew what I would NOT be getting a complete package. I had jobs lined up and have been unable to respond to the incomplete package I received.

As someone mentioned, the same way you powered your RED ONE you can power your EPIC.. surely you have some RED BRICKS and power cradle left over from the trade in. All you need is the adapter cable. A lot of people that have the side handle still prefer the RED BRICK method anyways... as already mentioned.

The choice is yours... you didn't need to send back your camera after using it for a couple of years for a 100% refund. You could of held onto your RED ONE.. that choice was yours.

It still amazes me that with some people that no matter how generous we are... we still can't win. That's fine. I guess that is human nature that we are just going to need to learn to deal with.

It's a fairly trivial process to read up on learn on what's needed to power the Epic/Scarlet cameras. The Bomb Squad can answer many questions for potential and upcoming Red owners. Not to mention that Red has this forum here to answer any questions regarding such issues and usually do so in a timely manner.

I only am backing these concepts as Red's customer service has been rather stellar on my side of the fence.

Just to add a quick note, you don't *need* the RedVolts in the DSMC Side Handle if you are powering your camera through V-Mount, AB Mount, or A/C Power. They are nice to have in at all times though. Currently the RedVolts are the most compact and lightweight power solution on their own. And yes, because they are lower capacity they don't power the camera as long.

Another praise for the Bomb Squad team and, in my case, to my rep, Nick. I'm constantly flooding him with questions concerning workflow and camera accessories and every single time he has been responsive and helpful. There is also a tech department from red that one can contact 24/7. i don't know if its the best place for all technical questions but its there. Never used it because my rep has just been excellent. Since I got my Epic early this week I've just been very pleasantly surprised with my shooting experience with it. It is just an excellent camera. Where i see myself a bit overwhelmed now is in the Post Production side of things, but its a matter of really commit myself to learn every bell and whistle of redcine. Excellent product, excellent support, couldn't be a happier costumer so far!

Phil,

basically I agree with you that the info can be found. But I have no time to read all ongoing threads on RED USER to stay up to date and searching often reveals threads that ask the question, but not always gives the answer. Despite the time to "search" for answer. In my experience the RED team is very helpful on phone or by email. Some things turn out to be a little complicated sometimes, but it gets obviously better all the time.

My concerns where more about the presentation of the items and detailed info. One example (out of many): When you go to the RED store and look at the RED Rocket card, it will not tell you if the two DVI split cables are included or not, nor what else is in the package included.
So I'd say that any product information in the store (and that is where it belongs, not 'only' in the forum IMHO) should be as detailed as possible. Why not have a list of included items and a real photo of an open box. A image tells me a lot. And I'd appreciated if there would be e.g. exemplary mounting methods and ways of use (some products have that), so people better understand how parts fit together. I was at IBC to learn about all the parts before I order gear for the EPIC-X and there wasn't much to see. I can't afford a trip to the US just for going into a RED store to see the stuff before "hands on". I am saying that many questions could and should be answered in the store as first place, because that is the point poeple will look for it (at least I do).

Second I still wish on some more detailed information how parts fit together in general, like recommended setups and required pieces as explosion sheets. We know there are nearly uncountable options, but some field proven setups would already help a lot, as a starting point, maybe with a parts order number list and a price info. RED ONE had way less options and there we got a lot more like this beforehand. Its not moaning around, its a personal constructive criticism I am saying here so they can consider to do something about it, because apparently the problem comes up every now and then. I am sure they are aware of many of these things, but sometimes being soooo deep inside a product chain makes one blind to see it with fresh eyes. If you already know about every RED item by dealing with it every day, you may not easily find the point where information might be "required" from the perspective of a new visitor to their product web store with no previous knowledge of their products. So they need feedback which helps them to improve. No one is saying they do a bad job at all or we are unhappy with the offerings. I have RED ONE #110 and that says a lot I think... to those who know. But that still doesn't make me a RED expert in every way. As much as I would want to have ALL pieces around, that is not affordable for me. So again I have to make decisions and need help and assistance to make the decisions, on which parts to buy or not. Very simple.

Cheers,
Axel

Maybe we should just say that all upgrades fall behind all new sales?

Jim

I bet you feel like this sometimes eh Jim?

Personally, I think the FULL price trade in opportunity is just ridiculously generous and as you say, unheard of. I'd like to thank you in person one day but in the meantime I'm happily waiting in line for my email requesting RED One #7096 be returned to base.

Ill provide the most detailed backorder update we have ever had in the next 48 hours including the accessories... now that we have visibility on how the stages are going it will be much easier to give you guys better info.

Thanks for this, waiting only on a couple things now to complete everything, I am very thankful for what you guys have offered, my new EPICX here is so amazing and an amazing company.

Best,
Frazier

The only part that people don't seem to understand is that the trade-in program takes a bit of time... the surprise is how slow people are to respond and pay.

Being near the end of the Stage 3 line, with a Red1 and money ready to send in at the moments notice, hearing that others are sluggish in sending in the cameras and paying their balances makes me want to pull my hair out. ;)
Any chance that those of us who are ready to send in their cameras and pay immediately can do this NOW?

Extremely grateful for the generous Stage 3 deal you are offering us, I was never hung up or understood the serial number frenzy. More cameras you sell, the more clients will be familiar with Red workflow and benefits of shooting RAW. Everybody wins if stage 4 goes ahead as soon as possible.

Milan,

well spoken.

The offer to trade in the RED ONE was too generours - so we kept it. Fair enough deal and now we have a backup camera at hand at an unheard price of 8.500 US$ if I calcuclated roughly correct.

Big Thanks Jim!

Axel

As Jarred said they are not holding up stage 3/3.5 orders just because someone ahead of you is slow. Also you can send them your money now, they'll hold it in your account, it will speed up the process when the time comes.

As I have said many times I very much do appreciate this upgrade program and - again - I think my point is being lost. I am not asking for a solution on how to power my Epic - I am trying to offer some constructive criticism in order to better serve your customers. I am suggesting that if Red more effectively communicated to me what exactly I would be getting at the time I was told my Epic PACKAGE was ready (i.e. that there would be many components missing) I would have held off receiving it. I have been going from job to job with little down time to sift through threads and explore 3rd party options plus the lead time it takes to get them. As much praise as we all give Red - I think giving constructive criticism from time to time is valid. And as such shouldn't be viewed as some heavy handed slamming that needs to be "dealt with". Sorry if my suggestions were misinterpreted.

Actually, we tend to do stuff more by delivery date, not serial number. Like notices to send in Red Ones for trade in, for example.

BC

This is for sure, my delivery date was way before some really earlier serial numbers who I guess waited for a long while before taking delivery of their RED Ones. And guys the speed at which your Stage 3 Trade In can be done is really dependent on what you do. I sent my camera in, it arrived on Monday, got the results on Wed. Invoiced on Wed, paid on Wed. and the camera shipped on Tues. due to a holiday on Monday. It doesn't get any faster than that.

I see Stage 3 folks that have gotten emails and haven't responded it seems or paid or this or that, so from my perspective, the Stage 3 process if the customer deals with it can't really be any faster.

Very thankful for Stage 3 and your very generous trade in offer. Loving my camera and you know things just keep getting better all the time.

Thank you,
Frazier

Mark, they are not sending new email notifications until those in Stage 3 ahead of us decide to send their R1s in and pay their balances. As Jim mentioned, it's surprising how slow some people are in doing this.

IMHO, It would make business sense for Red to take money from those of us who are ready to buy NOW, if at all logistically possible.

My Red1 has been sitting unused for almost a year, most of my clients prefer renting Epics instead.

Or you could always buy the latest SONY HD-super duper-something every 2-3 years. That way you could keep all your batteries and only spend 25-60k each time:)
