  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

Yes it is cropped when you go down in resolution. That is how you can achieve higher frame rates with the Scarlet's 50Mb/s bandwidth.

Bummer. I was hoping there would be a pixel binning scheme to allow continued use of the whole sensor at lower resolution/higher framerate shooting.

Zoom Lenses - 2k - documentary production

Zoom Lenses - 2k - documentary production

I work mostly in TV broadcast documentary world - which brings some issues with the current Scarlet specs:

- I need an easy to use fairly long reach zoom lens (14-18x, ideally with a doubler)
- it's nice to have a servo zoom control
- I don't have to shoot (always) at 4k, 2k would be great

Therefore:

1. Any suggestions on broadcast-style PL zoom lenses?
2. What happens if one was to use a S16mm PL lens? Crop factor? Conversion ration?

Any takers? Thanks for any suggestions.

Well, i will be not so exited, and i hope anyone from RED will be able to answer my question. Im with RED ( 2 of them) since 2008, now i have 2 Epics. I have paid deposit more then a year ago for EPIC, in a mean time I have give up with ALEXA as every month from March i get the promess that next month EPic will be sent , Then I have decided to go with EPic M, then i see Scarlet what is actually EPIC without few options around 4 times cheeper, so guss HOW DO I FEEL NOW?
I have made on Red MX 9 big movies, with 4k, As far as i undestand SCARLET is almost the same as RED ONE in 4K mode ( no slow m) so if i made so many movies and others have done either why ANYBODY will rent EPIC 5k for 4 times biger money as they can buy scarlet and have same quality. For last 3 years 4k , 25 was enough so why should not be now? Europe is not Hollywood and We shoot cheap movies, no one will pay now for 5 k , no reason. Even 2:1 is not a problem as DCP now accept that format as a standard ( at least they try)
SO PLEASE RED TELL ME, WHY ANYBODY SHOULD PAY NOW FOR EPIC M ( 58 k) or RED ONE ( 25 K ) IF THEY SHARE SAME SENSOR AND 25 F/S IS AVAILABLE,
Please answer me as U old customer really wondering if I made a good choice to pay for Epics and wait so long to be suprised in a day of delivery that another , very similar camera is available in 1/4 of the price???? Delivery took place today, but all happyness has gone somehow...

U made competition between own clients, what is really wrong in my opinion, those cameras are too close , difference is not worth additional money in my opinion.
Waiting for answers. Please do it RED TEAM.

Hi,

First of all, just THANK YOU RED PEOPLE!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR VISION AND FOR YOUR PRICELESS WORK!! You just changed everything... you changed it four years ago and you changed it tagain yesterday...

Thank you guys!!

I'm amazed with Scarlet... last year we shoot our first shortfilm on Red One and we are just happy!! Now we plan to found our little production company and we'll go for Scarlet for sure...

Red One came to fight with 35mm... and Epic came to be even fighting with 70mm when 4k projectors will be ready in theaters...

I think Scarlet is just what the people wanted... a real professional camera for indie productions and a future replacement for R1 when upgrades will be plausible... (excuse me, but I think R1 owners will have to understand that it's inevitable)...

Is the "Epic-S" that we were waiting for... but I started reading all the threads and discovered the complains about 2/3 and fixed lens and cannot avoid to be a little bit sad about all this people...

No 8X Fixed. We had terminal issues with the lens. If you are sad, just think about us. All those development dollars down the drain.

Jim

I know I'm not the correct person and not the correct moment to say this, but...

Won't be possible to think about making a really affordable camera to all those canon 5d indie moviemakers?

I'm not a camera guy, but postproduction, and I don't know the facts, but I was thinking: If the canon 5d and 7d shooters use a FF or APS-C sensor with cheap lenses and obtain great results for a home indie movimaker, could'n maybe possible to use or adapt the old R1 misterium sensor to a Scarlet body with 1080p capabilities? Or even 2k to beat competitors? What would be the crop factor?

I think there is a own market in all this people wanting to tell stories with home affordable budgets... as Coppola said:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WOnRAvdK2s

I'm thinking about a camera like:

2k - 24/25 fps
1080p - 120 fps

for aprox 3000$... with Al canon mount, with a good lens set:

16-35 - 1700$ aprox
24-70 - 1400$ aprox
70-200 - 1400$ aprox

Don't you think this could be a great and affordable tool for this little fat girl in Ohio?

Big hug,

Joxerra.

PD: Thanks again, red people!!

Anyone know the aspects that are available on the Scarlet?

We shoot pretty much all of the time in 2:1 on our RED One so just interested to see if we could do this with the Scarlet.

Cheers in advance.

So there's a lot of excitement about the EPIC-S turned SCARLET-X and also a lot of sadness to see the 8x fixed go. And I am sure
Jim and the crew probably are the most hurt to let it go. I personally like the idea of the new SCARLET-X since I have been always torn
between the 2/3" Scarlet and the Scarlet-S35/Epic-S. I'm just right now trying to figure out where to get the extra cash :)
well I hope in the next week I got it... can't wait to place my order and not only be a reduser anymore, but a redowner!

But one thing I still don't get: where does 1K come from? 1080p is not good enough... what's 1K then?
I see it as an attempt to try and save the promised high fps, but below 1080p I don't really see it making sense in a pro camera.
Jarred, Jim? What's your take on 1K?
I like it as an option, don't get me wrong but I just don't know how it would intercut into a movie shot in 4K or even 2K, or am I missing something?

I know you don't want to spill anything anymore, but is it at least POSSIBLE that in time we might see 7:1 2k @ +60fps?
Or what about the "burst" feature you were thinking of in the "early days" ... is that still possible?
For a lot of stuff, shooting high fps will be sufficient if shot for just a couple of seconds. So maybe that would be an idea to up the frame rate
on higher res settings? Or is something like that impossible to do with the SCARLET-X?

I know you can't promise, and I'm not asking for that, but maybe a little "we're looking into it" or "no, sorry no way" would be awesome.

And please do elaborate on the 1K idea.

Thanks and thanks and thanks again for making our dreams possible. What an awesome ride!

cheers!
patrick

Well that was a... heartbreaking read.

I say this as a currently broke and unemployed individual: this is actually the perfect price. Rental houses will get these eventually and I imagine packaged prices for those will be extremely manageable. This higher pricetag is actually a blessing in disguise because we are getting a much better camera for what really isn't that much more.

Not broke, and not unemployed individual...

I am a Red supporter from day one.

My point is that from day one things has changed, and I do not fell like I belonge here any more.

Me and many have spend a lot of time and effort to promote Red comunity and vision, but now
we can not help but feel like we do not belonge here any more.

Scarlet was hope for many, now it is epic for less money.

Market wise, maybe it is a good decision for Red, but the feeling is wrong.

Best regards

How about this: mount the camera 90 degrees and shoot some real sexy 120fps elements for compositing. Used in this configuration, you essentially have 1024 lines of horizontal resolution to play with. My test is going to be exploding apples. How about them apples, by the way?

I too felt this way. Many months ago, when Jim wrote a post deep in some thread about how Scarlet had changed. He said it was far from the 3k for $3k dream, far from the 2/3" prosumer competitor. He said RED is a professional company that makes professional cameras, and Scarlet would follow suit. I was disappointed, but started saving beyond the original price estimations. Last night's announcement did not come as a surprise, and I for one am glad the Scarlet developed into a full-blown professional camera.

I know ho do u Feel now, i have same feelings. Looks like RED is more emotional then wise, even the day of anoncment shows their personal fight with Cannon.
Unfortunatlly for old red owners is not so funny an we do not care about personal ambition of RED to beat "big guys". This hit us very much, EPIC owners even more then RED ones.
Im EPic owner and since 24 h i wondering how can i pay back the loan for my cameras if Scarlet will hit the market. RED , U hit us from the Back!

After a long wait the server finally gave us lots of amazing news
Any thought about Scarlet/Epic price difference?
I am sure somebody will be tempted by getting the cheaper tiny newborn and rent an epic for the rare slow motion occasions.

It all depends on your needs. So if you're angry, sell your Epic's and get Scarlets when they are available, but it has lower pixelrates than RED1 and EPIC. You pay for the ability to use 5k and 120fps, if you want to use 120fps on Scarlet its at 1k, which is nearly useless. At least R1 has 120fps at 2k... EPIC can shoot 5k HDR 48fps or 60fps if you want, and I can imagine why one might want that, Peter Jackson wanted 5k 48fps, so will others. On Scarlet you're stuck at 3k and 4/3" sensor size if you want 48fps or HDRx, 1k if you want both. If you don't care about 5k or HDR or >30fps, then definitely save yourself some money and trade out for a Scarlet, but then again if you didn't care about those things why did you upgrade from your MX?

Plenty of people might still pay for an EPIC-M if they want a camera for a project right now, the other cameras will likely be on backorder indefinitely and it sounded like Jim even said that Scarlet would always be backordered.

I just need the explenation, as i do not see difference between scarlet and epic for such a big price. Can RED TEAM answer that question please? What have U think of when u did set up the price for SCARLET. Few hundred epic owners need an answer .

The same way you would have paid it back before. Is the release of the Scarlet going to diminish your job opportunities? Personally, I have no sympathy for the boo wooing EPIC owners. There is a big difference in the specs of the EPIC and the Scarlet. More so than say the difference between a T2i and 7D, yet the 7D costs 4 times as much.

It comes down to bandwidth and processing power. Epic can shoot much higher FPS and shoot at 5k. You can't shoot motion work currently on the Scarlet at 5k. It's more of a 5k stills and 4k motion camera. There is actually a huge gap in terms of performance and features between these two cameras.

Epic = Big motor
Scarlet = Tiny motor

...and w/ HDRx at more commonly used frame rates, you'll need to drop that down to 3K motion on Scarlet-X (see chart below)

Noah, i mean if 4k was ok for red one mx, will be ok on scarlet, so why do sombody will like to pay so much money to get a lit bit beter camera. I have it, i can compare it to RED ONE MX, im colorist. HDR u can use on scratch only, and is post production work, a lot of work , is worth it in some situations but for most 4k Red one mx quality is enough, scarlet will be enough for 99 % of movie productions, so where is the place for EPIC, like Phantom, for sepcial efects only?

besides that , small 2/3 camera would be great for 3D , i wonned to buy it , 4 of them, now i will buy no one...
