  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SCARLET ANNOUNCEMENT - Feedback

"The same way you would have paid it back before. Is the release of the Scarlet going to diminish your job opportunities? Personally, I have no sympathy for the boo wooing EPIC owners. There is a big difference in the specs of the EPIC and the Scarlet. More so than say the difference between a T2i and 7D, yet the 7D costs 4 times as much."

BUy an EPic for 58k, we will talk...

Noah, i mean if 4k was ok for red one mx, will be ok on scarlet, so why do sombody will like to pay so much money to get a lit bit beter camera. I have it, i can compare it to RED ONE MX, im colorist. HDR u can use on scratch only, and is post production work, a lot of work , is worth it in some situations but for most 4k Red one mx quality is enough, scarlet will be enough for 99 % of movie productions, so where is the place for EPIC, like Phantom, for sepcial efects only?

besides that , small 2/3 camera would be great for 3D , i wonned to buy it , 4 of them, now i will buy no one...

You decide what quality is enough, as I said, if 4k is enough and you dont need 4.5k or anamorphic or 5k or >24fps then why don't you sell your epic for a scarlet? For many, 1080p is enough or 11 stops of latitude is enough so you could grab an FS100 with an external recorder. If you bought EPIC, you had a reason for it, if that reason no longer exists, sell it, but if it does then try to be happy with it since no other camera does what EPIC can do. This is basically computer hardware, people pay $1k for 3ghz chips now when $200 2ghz chips that do the same work are coming out in a couple weeks/months even if they came from the same same wafers. It's the cost of cutting edge, and it keeps the market moving forward forward since profits from the high end cover the R&D that makes the high capacity low end market possible. Better silicon is sold first at a premium and drops in value fastest, but you buy it because it will make you more money and faster and now.

RED may make some customers mad, but they have to sell cameras, and better for them that they eat into some of their own profits than that someone else eats into theirs. Not sure how they are making money on Scarlet, but if they are, they will make a killing.

Question was for RED TEAM not for U. same for U, buy cameras for 58 k, we will talk...
I own now 4 of Red products, and im not happy with the way all have tourned.
I started that RED thing long time before U , i took a risk in 2007 so please, leave the answer for sombody who actually USE REDS!

So buy a Scarlet and rock on!

The thing I'm most excited about is not just owning the scarlet I put a deposit on, but the fact that they will become so much more accessible and user base so vast that the workflow will quickly become very well supported by all 3rd parties and demystified. Red post does not have to be complicated or expensive, but people sure love to make it that way by squeezing it into their out of date workflows.

RAY- i agree with u, but i blame RED for not clear strategy and starting the market war between RED users.
We make decisions based of some trust,
Today is different, today i have choice, i can choose, but yesterday it was only EPIC. I was happy that i have competitors adventage, that i have make some good investment, now all feelings gone.
It just feel is unproper...

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I simply do not have time to read through 50 pages of comments.

But what is the crop factor for 4k on this thing? I think it's a little misleading (heh... or amazing marketing. You decide.) that RED is claiming that it's an S35 sensor. Yes, I know technically it is... and for 5k stills... it is also. But MOST people are going to be buying this camera for 4k motion. It is not an S35 sensor at that point.

Can someone point me to data that states the crop factor for each resolution? Thanks a million.

p.s. I'm not trying to bash. I LOVE this camera and it's a lot more camera than I was expecting. I was at the announcement event yesterday and loved how Jim took control of the situation. It's just a massive pill I'm still trying to swallow after waiting for this camera for 3 years.

Question

Why is 2k not 100 fps? I am using basic math, but a 4k screen has 4 times as many pixels as a 2k. So am I missing some overhead data or something? Either way, I am purchasing the scarlet next paycheck, but it is just for my own knowledge.

Ok guys!

I've placed my deposit and thought I would pop round to the Red's shrine to light a candle and say a few good words:

I AM ABOUT TO OWN A 4K CAMERA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the future no doubt and the only way forward to continue expanding my work as a DP. All going well with current plans, I shall be using it on a feature film later in 2012. Can't bloody wait! Thank you RED!

Super hyped on all of this! That was the best feeling putting my deposit down. I've been saving money for this for over 2 years now, and although it totally sucked sometimes, its completely paying off right now. I can now sit at my house with a smirk on my face and know that i actually got to buy this amazing camera that has only been a dream for so long. I'm jealous that you guys at red actually got to see everything develop in front of you, however hard it may have been. Thanks guys!

Nik, I feel the same way bro. I bought mine last night and I'm already getting accessories in order so I can shoot the day it arrives.

The pixels are pixels and framerates are speed: number of frames per second. Has nothing to do with each other.

5K is 60% more pixels than 4K. Shooting motion at 5K makes a difference. And that 60% more takes a lot more horsepower. So is framerates Important to some people.. which again takes more horsepower.. and so does compression.

We didn't invent the big brother/ little brother concept.. it has existed since the beginning of time.

What makes a $100 Pentium 2.8ghz CPU different then a $1000 Pentium 3.2ghz CPU.? they usually come out of the same oven...

When chips and sensors go through testing, some can perform faster than others and handle more speed/data than others. It's called yield, and it is not artificial. You get parts that can handle the speed, some that cannot. Instead of throwing all those ones that can't keep up, you run them slower and give them a new life. Pretty simple stuff.

I wonder this myself. If we have 4K at 24fps, how much of the sensor is cropped on the Scarlet? 20%?

EPIC owners need not worry. It's a lot of camera for the $$ but there certainly are some compromises for the reduced price, some of which may not be apparent to many.

I need to know this info too. Are we saying that we're using like a 4/3 sensor size to shoot motion? I hope not, I am hoping the information is just not using as many of the pixels or something. I want my S 35 lenses to be true to their form.

I remember the rumors back around NAB. They apparently completely scrapped the Scarlet program. The 8x zoom and compact primes are gone with the 2/3" sensor. It's a shame, really. That would have been a pretty interesting system.

This camera seems like an oddity to me. The data rates seem to severely limit it. And weren't we expecting an "Epic-S" soon for just a couple of thousand more than this that use the same sensor and offer higher data rates? Has that program been cancelled, as well?

-Rob

If you remember, few years ago, that was all Scarlet..2/3: fixed , interchangeable, then S35 and so on. So, in essence, they only scrapped Scarlet 2/3 , but not Scarlet S35 that eventually became 4K. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it until someone proves me wrong (that is usually very quickly ;)
