  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I was really enjoying this thread until people started flinging the FUD around. So on that note, I have just trimmed nearly 100 posts out of this discussion. For those who really feel the need to continue that course of discussion, it can be located here, and please keep the FUD out of this thread.

That is probably the coolest thing we have ever made. I have one on the back window of every car. Careful with it... it is metal.

In regards to what this thread was originally about, Jim love the pics. Can't wait to see these in the flesh.

To all those who have questioned whether Jim will deliver the goods, all I can say is you can speculate all you want, you can be skeptical about what will be delivered for how much, and you can be angry that it has taken more time than you wanted to deliver, but you have to understand one thing - this is Jim's company. He's also customer #1. The company tagline of "everything is subject to change, count on it" may piss people off but I'm not sure what people don't get here, this has always been the case. No one is a holding a gun to anyone's head and saying you have to buy this camera. My guess is that Jim would rather you not buy the camera if you're going to come into this with a bad attitude. As far as I can tell he didn't start this company just to make money, he actually seems very much into filmmaking for the masses, providing cameras at fair prices so people can get access to quality that perhaps didn't seem possible before RED came along. He has taken a lot of crap since first announcing Red One a few years back. He's been called a scam, he's been attacked by professional DPs, he's been attacked by people who have nothing better to do than complain, etc. He's been relatively patient throughout the process, more than he probably needs to be, considering he could be on an island somewhere sipping some fine wine.

This isn't about being RED fanboys, about drinking the Cool Aid. It's about looking at the track record, recognizing that sure RED has made some mistakes along the way and yes they have missed deadlines and delivery dates but the reason you even knew about some of this is because they have allowed you a lot of access into their development process. Sometimes, it's not even mistakes, it's just change in direction based on a variety of factors. Being an independent camera company, they can turn on a dime. A lot of times that's actually good for the customer. Sometimes it might not be (price increases for example). But the bottom line is not too many Red One owners feel screwed. In fact, those of us that were in early had the most challenges to overcome. Many of the features that current buyers now enjoy were not there when we first got our cameras. Heck, audio wasn't even enabled on the early cameras. Those early adopters are still satisfied. Why, because RED is a little different than other companies. Don't forget, you're communicating with the owner of the company, and a very successful businessman who frankly probably gives a shit more than many people realize. How many CEOs do you know that are up at 2am interacting with their customers and future customers? If that doesn't say a lot about Jim and the company he is running, I don't know what will do it for you guys.

Again, getting back to the renders which started this thread, the fact that Jim and Jarred have come on here and posted renders of where designs were heading is so cool, yet many times it seems taken for granted. I know that some will retort with "yeah, but that's the secret to their marketing, they create hype". Okay, fine but would you rather have it the other way? Would you rather they don't post any information until they have the cameras built? If they never announced anything about Scarlet until a couple of months before the cameras were to come off the assembly line, would that have been a better approach for people?

I hope I don't come off sounding pissed off in this post, because I'm not at all. I just think Jim needs to be given the benefit of the doubt here, and allowed to release the specs when he is ready and at that point if people want to go off on him because they feel like they got screwed or the specs don't live up to their expectations, fine. But why do it now, when for all you know they may be better than you thought they were going to be? Red has delivered some surprises in the past with features that were never in the original plan, so it wouldn't shock me if there were some more tricks up their sleeve that might catch people by surprise.

If Scarlet is anything less than a game changer, I will be flat out shocked. Have patience guys, I think you're going to be happy.

Do you see the head of Panasonic, Canon, JVC, or any other major camera company giving numerous updates on a daily basis on what products they are soon to be releasing? Jim and the rest of the RED team have truly started a revolution and you can either join along for the ride and quit complaining or you can get another product. I, myself read over reduser every day for updates and rarely post, but I felt the need to speak up reading page after page of speculation and complaining. I have been a member of this board since Jan 2007 and an original reservation holder of a RED One, but sadly things came up and I could no longer afford it when my turn arrived. Then like any good company, RED decides to expand their market in both directions with the Epic and Scarlet, and my savings began. I do not believe that there is another company that can offer such high quality products at such a reasonable price. Just remember there is nothing in digital camera market that compares to the Epic and good luck finding a camera with Scarlet's capabilities for under $100K. Jim and Co. have proven that they are truly looking out for the consumer by creating revolutionary products that are within financial reach of many independent filmmakers. I have had a project on hold in anticipation of the Scarlet, because I figured I would rather shoot it in the best possible quality that I can afford instead of settling for what is available on the market today. Good things come to those who wait or should I say great things.

Jim, you should be proud of what you and your team have accomplished and are going to continue to accomplish. Just remember you could tell a thousand people that the earth is round, but you will always have a few that argue that point. Do not change the open line of communication that you have created with all of us just because of an impatient few. Myself along with your loyal redusers are behind you.
 
Has weight of Epic brain, CF module, I/O module, REDmote all together been addressed? Will this configuration be more or less the same as a RED One body?

Looking forward to the arsenal of different configurations made possible from one camera...

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you Jim. I think the RED ONE is the coolest thing you have ever made. The buzz saw is number 2. Of course all these move down a peg once the Epic and Scarlet roll out.

I believe the brains are about 6 pounds. RED one body is about 10 or 11 pounds, so I think as soon as you add a battery module it will weigh more than the Red one body.

Battery module I'm personally not worried about because my power shouldn't be mounted with the camera. Just curious about the brain, I/O, and REDmote together. Seems like they will be relatively light...
