  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why Fixed Lens first?

I just love it when people post their beliefs as fact. Echoing Jeff's post... who said 8X Fixed was 1st? And who said where we are making either camera?

Jim

Making either camera? I believe here we have a hint at the big news for NAB...

They could even employ some magic to eke some extra percieved mtf, since it's just the one lens.

many midlevel HD cameras do in camera distortion and chromatic aberration correction for specific lenses - typically the "kit" lens - so they can get the most out of it for the least cost. This would certainly be more feasible for the fixed zoom version of scarlet.

I think I got the idea that the fixed lens would release first because that was the camera shown in the videos I watched. However, I watched both videos again, and indeed nothing is mentioned about the fixed lens camera releasing first.

So, my apologies for the misstatement.

Looking forward to seeing the interchangeable lens version in a video.

No speculation on my part about where the cameras will be manufactured. America, Tibet, it's all the same to me as long as I can order one.

RED has. Many times. I’m sorry I didn’t go find all the quotes, but they have. Even on their website when it was recently revamped it still said Fixed to be released first. Though I admit that I could no longer find that page with all the Scarlet info on it. And they have always been slated to be close together.

It can still be found on the press page, for one. I stumbled across it while looking for Scarlet images to use on the menu for the BluRay I burned of Felix. :sifone: Take the info there with a grain of salt, since it feels sort of outdated, not to mention the omnipresent "everything subject to change."

We'll find out soon enough! Everyone at Red is as excited for us to get them as we are!

This comment seems to assume that the interchangeable Scarlet will be produced domestically while the Fixed will be done abroad. Is this just conjecture on your part?

I do recall Jim discussing the need for a new foreign production source (after the existing one seemed to be unavailable), but I always assumed all Scarlets would be produced in the same place, separate from Epics. :001_huh:

Yes, Terry. Pure conjecture, but based on a careful reading of the tea leaves. I always am careful to put "in theory", "my guess is", and other clues that should be apparent to the careful reader that I am speculating. Obviously this needs to be stated: Unless it comes directly from Jim Jannard or Jarred Land or anyone else with a Red name, don't trust it.

Sorry, Jim if I stepped on your toes with my armchair quarterbacking. But, that's what happens when you build the camera of everyone's dreams. I am chomping at the bit to get it. I am consumed with excitement. I missed my calling- should have been a detective or a lawyer. Neither of which endear me to leaders in any organization. If you can suffer me for the next couple of months, I promise you, I will disappear with my Epic and you'll never hear from me again ;), Except at Red Day;).

I would think a fixed lens would be infinitely easier. Designing an OLPF for exactly one circumstance compared to an infinite number of circumstances? I'd choose the one. That's just one example. The same logic would apply to numerous components along the camera's path. My guess is fixed is infinitely easier.

They could even employ some magic to eke some extra percieved mtf, since it's just the one lens.

The OLPF is primarily designed with respect to the sensor and sensel pitch, not the optics. The microlens arrays on top of the sensor is dependedant on the lenses, but not the OLPF. The goal is to cut off high frequency information in excess of the sensors capabilitites to avoid aliasing, not CA, enhance MTF readings or some other optical defect.
I don't even know if RED is using a micro lens array in their sensors, but the primary goal is to enhance light gathering capabilities for sensors with a lot of "dead" space in between the sensels with the drawback of a less flexible system that will have some issues with either ultrawides or extreme tele designs as you can't design for both unless you also design your optics for that particular micro lens array design. Which would be a bit crazy if you want to keep your future options open.

Look at the stills dSLR's and MF digibacks - they have to cater 50+ lensdesigns and the focus is on the microlens array on top of the sensor, not the OLPF which is optional in some instances. The IR filter can be swithed out with a combined IR + OLPF filter typically for fashion and textiles where the most pronounced aliasing occurs.

But I'm sure Graeme could give a more detailed explanation relevant for motion cameras as I am sure there is smaller less important connection to lens designs when you design the OLPF.

MHO.

Uh... Who said the fixed lens would release first?
"As of October 1st, 2010, these 3 cameras are still in development, with a target for the first launch, Scarlet 2/3 Fixed, being early 2011."

Taken from here
Also from Red's press release: "The original inspiration for Scarlet was a 3K, 2/3" camera with a fixed, high speed zoom lens, finder, media recorder and power supply. This will be the first Scarlet offered and referred to as Scarlet 2/3 Fixed (Fixed referring to the 8X fixed zoom lens)."

And from the 7/5/10 Q&A:
Terry VerHaar: "Is the Fixed 2/3" Scarlet still likely to be the first one out of the box? (i.e. before interchangeable and the S35)."
Jarred Land: "yes."

I understand that everything is subject to change, especially with the S35 being replaced with the Epic-S.

Jim's recent post notwithstanding, at least I am not crazy. :willy_nilly:

Oliver and Lawrence:

Thank you guys for finding those quotes, I felt bad I didn’t do it, but I didn’t. I am totally fine with all things subject to change. It matters not to me which is released fist. But I don’t think it’s fair to insinuate that it was never said in the past that the Fixed was to be released first. It was said. Many times in many places and even on the RED website. So people thinking that isn’t crazy. It isn’t like “where’d you get that idea from? Why would you think that?” Because the answer is, well that’s what the information we had said.

By all means though RED, release ‘em however you see fit.

Why do you think the fixed lens will be more popular? Why wouldn't people want the flexibility of interchangeable lenses?

All else being equal, it's all about the glass. Don't you want the option to use mini primes, or some old Zeiss glass?

Size, weight, cost, and convenience in relation to quality. It will be quite expensive to purchase the right lenses for the Scarlet Cinema. It’s been stated on this board many times (by people far smarter than me) that for the price of a good zoom for the Cinema you’ll be able to pick up a Fixed with its already sweet lens built in. And I agree with that thought.

Now, if RED were to offer a Mini-zoom along with the primes (like say the lens that is on the Fixed, but available separately) at a cost that would make a package with the Cinema and the Zoom near the Fixed... I would agree. No need for the fixed. But they have clearly stated that they don’t have any current plans to do that. Or at least they have clearly stated that in the past. So if you’re looking outside of primes and to Zooms, the quality cost ratio lands you on the Fixed, and that’s what more people IMHO will do as a result.

Leo,

Don't feel bad. I thought the interchagable Scarlet was killed completely (probably for reasons you mention above). All I read about it is the fixed and S35 becomming and Epic, and I'm here a lot. So it's easy to miss stuff.

I’m imaging a belt with lenses holstered in it and quick draw lens swap competitions like they have for reloading the magazine on a hand gun. Can we get the camera to automatically “eject” the lens? That would be sweet. Lenses flying everywhere. It would be a team event. The AC has to catch the ejected lens and re-holster it.

*Edit, ok I’m dork. I admit it :-)*
