  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VFS Inclino, Imperio, Origo News ??

I think at some point, there's a reality that must be faced. Any piece of equipment, no matter how wonderful, could always be made better. And at around $2000, the Imperio/Inclino promises amazing value.

What's the matter with making a good product, and then down the road improving it later? In a way, that's the best of both worlds. You might even consider the Red model: trade in Version 1 for Version 2 down the road for a credit. (Hope I don't sound too presumptuous there).

Anyway, you will always find someone (or a lot of someone's), in this business who want more. That's to be expected. And while I can certainly see the need or desire for working distances substantially greater than 50', I've always been able to work around this sort of limitation. (Maybe I'm a Luddite, but I'm still amazed that there is such a thing as a wireless FF).

Actually i dont really care if the antenna is sticking out from the body or not. As long as we dont limit the potential of this guy. If that is the only way then go for it.

Right angle antenna better - less likely to get snapped off or worse rip up the PCB. A tight fitting access hole would minimise leverage on the PCB if/when the antenna gets knocked.

Bit of a bodge, but preferable to retooling/remanufacture cost and delay.

50 feet is very poor and I can only guess not usable in non "open air" situations
We've waited so long I'd rather we receive a tool that works in the real world.

I want a tool not a toy.

what he said...
i would rather wait another 2 months and have the thing working...dont want a redrock experience again.

What Patrick said. I just want this thing for steadycam purposes and other close-quarter focus-pulling.

And I am really tired of waiting for it.

To put this in perspective, The Bartech BFD has a range of 300' line-of-sight and at least 100' in everyday use, pushing through walls, etc. I think that this is a far more practical range than a 50' limitation. I also think that the Bartech is the more appropriate comparison considering the price point.

Curt I see your "fix" as an opportunity. I've been messing with mine (I have a proto for the TV Show I am working on for this product.. Shooting today in fact) and I would LOVE it if you included a washer connected to a loop so I had a place to tie something about my neck to hold this when not using it.

I love the idea of the Antennea... How sturdy is it?

Jay,

We are working with the manufacturer of the module right now. We have a surprise that will be included with Impero for the use you mentioned.

I think a removable antennae is a great option, Curt. If we can leave it off for close-quarters works and just screw it on when needed, then I think that's fine..

Feel free to enlight us poor customers…

Curt, I have a feeling 50' is not gonna cut it, but Patrick's suggestion of an ad on when you need extra range could be a satisfactory solution.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

300' on the Bartech? Didn't realize that, but also didn't take the time to really play with it to test such things. I rented one for a job last month, but never operated more than about 30 feet from the camera. Actually the Bartech ran great, no complaints. Interesting job, we were shooting in a foundry with molten metal. Often hanging the RED off of utility cranes and chain hoists. Lots of magnetic interference and vibration. There was this low-frequency hum that was just the right level to completely f@&# with the RED Drive operation and cause lots of dropped frames. Had to buy the RED RAM just for that job.

Please don't attach the antenna to the bottom of the body unless it's removable. This would be an awkward product design because it makes the unit much higher and the antenna is prone to break off when the unit is put down.

I don't know about the innards of the Impero but I suggest that a much better location for the outer antenna would be to the right of the bus connector:

Maybe you want to keep the internal antenna as a default for low distance setups and add the option to temporarily attach the second one to the outside of the body. But then you'd probably need to turn off the first one in order to avoid interference.

My 5 cents...

Guys - when you come up with suggestions you have to take into consideration that VF probably already has at least a couple of hundred of the plastic shells on the shelves. So any modification to the shell would have to be hand made while assembling the unit. As far as my engineering skills goes - that leaves very few viable options. But maybe Curt can come up with something creative. After all - he's a very smart guy.

That's why I suggested a place that's level and probably has direct access to the main board.

Thanks for the feedback/suggestions guys... After tinkering around all day I think we have a solution.... We are going to use the small SMA antennas and we think we have a way to mount them on both the controller and receiver. I'm going to model up a couple options and we will most likely CNC some delrin components to cover the short term demand so we can get something made in a day or two. I will get yet another tool started so we will have a long term solution. As soon as I get something modeled up I'll post an image.

Using these SMA antennas we are getting around 100-125 feet consistently. The biggest thing I want to get squared away is a solid mounting method that wont get ripped off during normal operation - I'll let you all know how that goes.. Thanks for holing on a bit longer....

Nice one Curt..

As you mention, the most miportant thing will be making sure the antennae won't get ripped off during use. As you know, rental gear gets trashed..

After seeing some of Curts ideas modeled up I think we have a good solution that people should be happy with. Our testing today has come up with ranges around 120 feet or so. Just for comparison we have a Preston here and it lost signal at around 150. I know it goes out to 300 feet. But remember most wireless is effected by many things. Lots of testing is going on.

In the mean time I am building up Inclinos and have 98 sitting on the tables here.
