  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zoom H6 Available Today

Scott, any opinion about the H6 preamps ?

Thanks,

Kristin

Hey Kristin, I am in Paris too.

The Pre-amps are better. I have seen the specs as well which state that it does -120db A Weighted, which makes it much better than before, but put's it in the same territory as say a Tascam D100 MII. That would be fine for running say 2-4 lav units, but I would attach a juicedlink or an SD 302 for booming. To my mind it is a decent bit bucket and is really well conceived for radio mics.

I found this helpful:

He states that unfortunately the mixing dials don't lock, which means putting it into a bag is going to be difficult.

Bought mine today. Haven't tested it yet but learned that you can't safety track any of the 4 onboard xlr inputs, which really sucks. The Juicelink video that compares h4n with h6 convinced me to upgrade. Preamps sounded way better. I guess I'll do the safety track manually.

My only concern is what is the difference between headphone out on the h4n to Epic mic in and line out on the H6 to the Epic? I guess I'll figure that out tomorrow.

line out issue

line out issue

I'm sending clean audio from the h6 to the epic via the h6's line out. However the camera audio is distorted even though the levels are in the green? any ideas what could be causing this?

Basically is sounds like the audio is too hot but it's not...

EDIT** I tried a new 3.5 cable and it's clean, guess it was the cable...

Hey Scott, that's exactly what I'm getting. I tried changing the camera's audio settings to balanced but the headphones I had were so crappy that I wasn't sure if it fixed it. Still sounded brutal so I'm pretty sure it didn't. I know the audio inputs for the Epic are mic in and not line in so that's likely the culprit. Maybe playing with the -20 PADs will do something. I'm going to play around with it tomorrow night and see if I can figure something out that works.

Ryan,

Use the -20 pad so your levels on the h6 and Epic match (there abouts, although it is still a little hot for the epic). I tried a few 3.5 to 3.5 cables before i got a clean signal. The cable that works is from a sony radio mic set.

That's most likely what's going on. My sound guy gave us custom pads to add to our kit for smaller jobs with mixers that could only do LINE out.

Thanks guys! Okay, so it sounds like I might need a 3.5mm attenuated line to mic cable because the -20 pad isn't enough. How much attenuation to get is the question now.

so there is a way to connect the line out to the epic directly? got my H6 last week and so far i am really impressed.....but i guess that is easy since i don't know s..t about sound:) ....had a tascam thing before and this seems to be much better and much more intuitive.....

please ryan! if you can find a cable that works let us know!

Ok, so how are you carrying and mounting this thing? Can't think of a mixing bag that's currently well adapted to it.
Really strange ergonomics and the mixing dials don't lock.

Hey Clayton, I work a one band man gig in the corporate world and I use a noga Arm attached to a wc cheese side plate on the Epic

When hooking up Zoom to an Epic, please keep in mind the Epic jack is not a stereo input.
if you are getting distortion, you should try a stereo to 2 x mono splitter that goes to both Epic channels.

Have any H6 users been able to successfuly send a good level from the H6 to the epic?

The epic's minimum +30db is too hot even when using the H6's -20db pad, have i missed something?

Hi guys.

H6 has SMPTE timecode syncing ? Or at least a viable time code to use in RDCX or premiere? H4 has a time code in 4 track rec mode, but can't be used in any app.

thanks.
