  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looks like the Zoom H6 is out today. I've been using the H4n for a few years now and have been pretty happy with the performance/price ratio. For corporate stuff, I find it to be the right tool, with the exception of no safety track when interviewing more than 1 person at a time (I can manually create one if I use only 1 of the XLR tracks) and buttons instead of knobs for on the fly volume adjustments.

While I don't have or plan to buy the H6 yet (waiting on reviews on whether or not and to what degree the preamps have been improved), I like the idea of safety tracks, 4 XLR inputs with the option to add 2 more, adjustable knobs (vs. buttons), longer battery life, a line-out AND headphone out jack, ...etc...

If anyone's got their hands on the new H6, I'd love to hear what they have to say and if they think the upgrade is worth it.

Love to know if the menus are easier and if:

1. The files downloaded on the computer are still organized with all these empty folders. Hated that with the old zoom.
2. Is the LCD display on the screen well designed. All the pictures I see make them look find of fake and I wonder how useful it is.
3. Do you still have to press the record twice to start recording? Hated that feature but I understand the reason.
4. Are the line levels easy to control. I like dials but with they were sliders with a lock.

Looking forward to some reviews.
 
Would really like to know the actual noise floor and dynamic range of this recorder. End of the day, that's what counts.
 
ill try to post some files or have them available on dropbox. What would everyone like to see within reason?
 
I'd like to see how the H6 compares to the new TASCAM 60D, which seems to offer similar features, at a similar price. The Tascam form- factor could be a little unusual on a Scarlet/Epic, but in sound mixer's bag it may work better than the H6.
 
I have currently a tascam HD-P2, ill do a comparison against that as well as the h4n.

I'm also curious if you can plug the headphone output directly to the input of a Scarlet and Epic.

I know in the old version there were issues but I can't remember if it was because of the mic or line compatibility.

Wish the H6 had xlr outputs.

I've been plugging a 3.5mm from the headphone out of my h4n and into my Epic and it's worked great for scratch. Even used it as is for corporate stuff since it sounds that good when you mic everything well and have your settings dialed in.

Sennheiser g3 to h4n to Epic is a nice little combination.
 
Ideally, I'd like to get a Mix-Pre hooked up to either the ZOOM H6, or the Tascam 60D, while simultaneously feeding usable reference to the Scarlet/Epic.

wouldn't the line out be better?
i am assuming you get the whole mix through the line out....straight into the epic?
this thing looks great...
 
If correct, Red Epics/Scarlets don't take line in signals. What makes it tricky is the wiring of the epics. I used to get a buzz ing high pitch noise when I tried the h4n hookup.

The Tascam 60D is a non starter. It has incremental gain, meaning the sound is stepped if you have to raise or lower the levels with the pots while you are recording. The dumbest thing I have yet seen for a supposed new recorder.

Good to know. Zoom H6 it is.
 
The zoom h4n had a flaw according to multiple reviews, and most portable recorders are the same. The limiter/compressor is digital and it's placed after the preamp. Meaning sudden loud noises can still clip or overload the preamp.

I draw a chart to better exemplify this. Is this still the same with the zoom H6 ?
And can someone confirm this is true with the zoom h4n ?

About safety tracks. Can this be done manually with the zoom h4n ? With some kind of manual re-routing ?
Since it has 4 track recording and the latest firmware has added individual gain for each track / input.

We took a lightweight Epic kit to Arizona last October to complete a documentary and I used a Mix-Pre into a Zoom H4N and into the Epic audio channels 1 and 2

The limiter on the Mix-Pre stopped the Zoom preamp from clipping (and the Epic)

What amazed me was how good the audio guide tracks on the R3Ds turned out - as yet we haven't needed to use the Zoom audio

There was a good clip on Youtube about setting up a SD-2 with a Zoom H4N which offers a good guide for limiting in the audio chain
