  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will anything play 4K in real time?

Could be your trashcan GPU is broken then it lags and has glitches / missing pixel lines etc in large renders. Mine has the issue, it's a bitch need to send it to the store that will send it to california for repair...

oh yes! lots and lots of mac trash cans have some BAD BAD GPU problems.. they actually got recalled and if you take it into APPLE they should be able to swap cards or upgrade to a good one for a higher price. forgot about that . Bjorn is completely right

Hi, i don't have any glitches or missing pixel lines. Just choppy/slow playback.

do you have software mercury playback enabled or hardware?

if hardware is it CUDA?

I don't have any problems rendering, or playing back at 1/4 resolution. Wouldnt that suggest the graphics cards are ok? I have a memory module replaced not so long ago, and there was no indication in Apple's diagnostics that the graphics cards had problems?

I have OPENCL mercury playback enabled.

spend 10 minutes on google.. search "mac pro trash can gpu problems" or "mac trash can gpu premiere pro problems" or "premiere pro playback problems mac trash can"

its been a known problems since 2014 unfortunately. its hardware related..

I am not saying this is 100% your problem, but its a pretty well known problem with adobe and those specific models with those specific ATI video cards.

the fact you said you are not having any other problems with rendering or playback makes me believe you might be good. do you happen to know what model ATI video card you have installed?

"Apple has determined that graphics cards in some late 2013 Mac Pros, manufactured between February 8, 2015 and April 11, 2015, may cause distorted video, no video, system instability, freezing, restarts, shut downs, or may prevent system start up. "

Im not experiencing any of this?

Whats your raid read write speed in black magic disk test?

It could be GPU issues even without having the glitches... those comes later.

so lets say that youre not experiencing those problems.

You said your friend let you use another machine with a Titan X right? and you said you didnt notice any difference in playback.. did you perform both of these tests reading the same footage from the same drive? external? perhaps your drive is the main bottleneck?

sorry really am trying to help .. slow playback sucks

The main bottleneck with R3D playback is usually CPU, as the files need to be decompressed by CPU, and having a fast GPU will not help with the decompression.

Different resolutions, frame rates and compression ratios need different amount of CPU power, so it's hard to say which CPU will give you full quality playback on a 4k timeline. The latest 8core or 10core i7's can do it in some cases.

I appreciate your attempts to help, i really do!

The test footage was the same rushes, using two different identical RAID systems with a write speed was approx 800, Read speed over 1000.

Connected via?

I've noticed that compression ratio plays a role in playback performance as well. At 10:1 I can playback at 1/2, at 5:1 I have to drop it down to 1/4.

I think drive speed is less important, since even spinning drives can hit ~100mb/s which is about 5k 6:1 or 6k 8:1 at 24fps... so even a basic RAID0 or any SSD, ends up being double the necessary speed... 6k 3:1 is only 145mb/s, I think.

This. 100%. Compression and frame size are everything when you begin removing drive speed and CPU/GPU bottlenecks. Look at the data rate differences between 3:1 and 10:1. There's exponential processing differences happening. I can realtime 4K HD 12:1 all day long on a mediocre machine. That's why you hear so many varying results and why I urge people to post their specific requirements and results outside of hardware.

Myself, Jeff, Phil, Eric and a handful of others have posted about this in prior build threads to give you a better idea.

I think you should try FCPX, Premiere isn't great at using OpenCL, where else your machine was designed for FCPX.
