  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will anything play 4K in real time?

Of course there is, Whats the budget?

There are many factors though
- OS, Windows or macOS?
- Software, Davinci or RedCine or FCPX?
- What footage you work with is important also, .red or prores?

its all about the video card.. get the best NVIDIA card with CUDA that you can.. the new TITAN X are great

I have an i7 5930k w/ 64gb ram and 12GB TITAN X... plays back perfectly. make sure you are running the latest drivers.. on and your HDD matters. I run a RAID setup and SSDs for my workdrive. occasionally even on my 4TB SATA drives i have zero problem with playback.

5k actually..

however the moment you start stacking tracks in the timeline or adding any effects like lumetri you pretty much have to work in 1/2 or 1/4 res. which isnt a problem.

if a RED ROCKET card isnt affordable, I suggest using a proxy workflow.. the new proxy workflow in premiere is great.

Are you recording from the Dragon on 4k red?
Which trash can? D300 / D500 / D700?

I will test both my setups for you now and report back for Premiere, FCPX would have no issues with 6k.

Ideally id like 6K to playback smoothly, but 4K would be ok since thats what i mostly master at.
My system is the maxxed out version, so D700.

Thankyou

I have the same Mac as you, and I can play 5K RAW just fine and 6K most of the time. (Inteviews and things with not much movement in the frame seem to work fine...but once all those pixel get busy in a pan...it bogs) Your problem is likely not your machine, but the speed of the drives you are using to store the media. I have 2 Promise Pegasus R6 RAIDs, set to RAID 5....and they are only Thunderbolt 1. Get the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app and see what kind of read write speeds you are getting.

Edit: I should say I am doing this on FCPX. I don't use Premier (thought I do have it...) so I can't speak to how it works on our machines....but check out your disk speeds.

Would you mind doing a short test using Premiere so i can compare?

I have an early AM shoot tomorrow but can do it in the afternoon. I have FCPX set to max res most of the time. Like I said, stuff with a lot of movement can bog in 6k a bit but not a real problem. I will note that RCX also works quite well at higher debayer settings n my machine.

Ok

Mac Pro 2012
3.33 12 Core
64gb Ram
GTX Titan X 12gb (Maxwell)

Premiere Pro - 4k timeline - .r3d
1/2 res

Premiere Pro - 4k timeline - ProRes 422
Full Res

FCPX - 4k timeline - .r3d
Smooth as butter 24fps

Davinci - 4k timeline .r3d
Full Premium Debayer - 16 fps
Half res Good - 24 fps
Half res Good + 4 nodes - 22 fps

Davinci - 4k timeline ProRes 422
24 fps with 4 nodes

I think Premiere and OpenCL. to be honest.
I personally dont use premiere i like FCPX for the reason that it does an awesome job at background rendering so i can edit anything in the timeline.
Maybe switch? The Mac Pro D700 should eat through 6k and even an 8k timeline.

Have you tried using ProRes?
