  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

will any package include a mag reader?

Well I just did some reseach and saw the price on the g-drive one is about the same as the normal reader (199$ / 185€)
Also you can buy an thunderbolt adaptor (I can post a link if wanted) and use it "standalone" as a normal reader in case you don't have your g-drive setup with you.
But it's going to be at thunderbolt speed instead of USB3.0 which is going to be really handy with those 512GB and 1TB mags.
It definitely comes at a price since the adaptopr is almost the same price as the reader but it gives you a nice flexibility.
Well I guess that RED is going to sell thunderbolt readers soon, but I would go for the option with higher flexibility I think.

I would be interested, if the g-drive reader is going to work with any dock/raid or just the g-drive ones. Technically I don't see a problem for it to work with other ones. Or am I missing something?

What is it that you are refering to? And G drive is thunderbolt 1 speed.
 
anyone have a link to wher eyou can buy the g drive reader now?
and yeah, i thought it was thunderbolt and usb 3?

The port on the far right of the rear of the reader is a standard full size USB 3.0 port which allows the G-Technology ev RED MINI-MAG Reader to function on it's own or when installed into one of their G|Dock ev devices. You basically just plug it into one of those docks and it will then using the SATA connections on the rear to connect to the dock itself. The docks themselves currently have Thunderbolt on the rear.

The concept behind all of this is if you just need a reader on it's own you have one. If you are in the field and using the docks you can put in one or more readers (common on larger shoots) into the same dock as well as an ev class hard drive for example.

oh got it, thanks for clearing that up phil!
do you know if it comes with a usb 3 cable? doesnt have any info under the bandh menus, also, says not available yet, or maybe it was and now its not.
so why would anyone buy the one from red if they are the same price? are there any advantages?

Don't know until I test it. Honestly, I have a whole bunch of readers though. House, mobile kit, field kit, etc.... I'll get this soon and test it out. From what I understand it works very well. Jarred also had good things to say about it.

The reader comes with a USB3 cable. The dock comes with thunderbolt and USB3 cables.
 
The TB is useful in that it was moving it faster data wise in Jarred's FB post than the usb3 was moving the data so for daisy chaining, port options and speed I'm buying the new one
 
How much slower is USB 3 vs Thunderbolt when using the drive as a stand-alone vs when it's docked? Will off-load be faster than ESATA?

Right now I'm running a ESATA to Thunderbolt Adapter that I bought off Amazon. Seems to be pretty quick. Regular USB is slooooowwwww
