Hey Jarred, what are the odds I could get my hands on Komodo #1337 when it rolls off the line? Anything I can do to reserve it?

Not possible. Y'all gotta ease up on the Hydrogen tie-in requests... I know it still stings for some of you but RED CAMERA has a completely different process. RED CAMERA is already absorbing the discount for you Hydrogen folks, and you will get a priority allocation run ( outside the stormtroopers ) but we can't start matching serial numbers... you'll all just need to get lucky or swap with each other if you want a specific serial number.

I doubt there will be any reservations for any user when it comes to serials.

It was already covered in another post that there would be no preferential treatment for serial numbers. You get what you get.

But this brings up the question, what’s the deal with some guys wanting specific serial numbers? These are just cameras. I mean 20 years ago no one was calling Sony and asking if they could make sure the Betacam they were buying was serial number XXX. Besides making notes for insurance purposes, I’ve never paid any real attention to any of my cameras serial numbers, except one. One of my VariCams is 007. And that’s just pure, dumb random luck. It means absolutely nothing and increases the value of the camera by exactly the same. But I guess if it was a RED camera, someone would have called it James or Mr. Bond.

The Corona situation has made me reconsider. Looks like a lot of jobs will be cancelled in the near future. Already 2 gigs cancelled last week and this week. Cash flow will go down and might need the funds to keep the wheels spinning until the situation improves.

Pretty much all production is on hold state-side. The only big films still working are really the ones that will wrap in the next couple weeks. It's hitting everybody pretty hard. And not just our industry. I have friends in the service industry who are getting hit real hard and crazier some restaurants, depending on how long this lasts, will have a hard time re-opening. The huge impact on our industry will result in many, many product delays and massive dip in equipment sales during these "socially distancing" times. Our industry is still one of the industries where hands on the product interaction and experience is a very big part of sales.

Pretty much all of my tech clients and studio clients are working from home, some as far back as two weeks ago. A few people I know have already had it and recovered due to business overseas. More or less describing it as the worst flu they ever had.

It appears here in the US they are taking the "better safe than sorry" route. Pretty much no gatherings of over 50 people. Restaurants can still do take out, bars are closed, so are theaters. Vegas went from cancelling NAB to more or less closing the strip. Interestingly we'll likely see a surge in streaming and gaming related things, but not new productions being filmed for a hot minute.

Eventually though, the world will start spinning again. Next 8-12 weeks will be rather important. For sort of everything and everybody.

If you missed it the first time around, now is probably a good time to read "Capital" by Thomas Picketty. Yes, he does have a new book out about socialism, but Capital helps us understand the world in which we have been living for the past few hundred years.

TL;DR: Over the course of history, the national capital stock represents approximately 30 years of total collective effort, pretty much through thick and thin.

This has two major implications: (1) The lack of productive output for 8-12 weeks is going to hurt every one of us very much in a conventional, short-term sense, but it will not destroy our nation's fundamental capital stock. (2) We might want to re-think those tax policies that have significantly curtailed the revenue streams that had been used to replenish our nations' capital stocks (infrastructure, education, health, environment, and basically all other "public goods") in the name of helping create greater incentives for individuals to create profits for themselves. Nations with healthy capital stocks will ride through the next 8-12 weeks (or 3-4 months if need be). Nations without healthy capital stocks will suffer the chaos that desperation unavoidably creates. Just like in the movies, how this all ends will be determined by the choices made, and each of us will have to wrestle with how much was due to fate, and how much we can do with our own free will.

Yes Phil, it’s testing times for a lot of industries. We just have to hope the different measures will pay off sooner rather than later. Luckily most of the jobs have been postponed not cancelled completely just yet. Looking forward to the Komodo, even if I might get my hands on one a bit later than I initially thought

I'll be buying the very second Jarred says I can.

I don't see it replacing my very loved Helium, but as a B cam and on my Ronin I think
it'll make it's self very useful on my commercial shoots. The idea I don't need
an hour down time on set to rig the Helium on the Ronin is huge for me and my agency.

A combination of oil prices and the corona virus has sent the Norweigan currency in free fall. When we bought our first Red (2011) we paid 5,50 for a Dollar, this morning it was over 12 krona to the dollar�� I hope it goes back to normal before the Komodo launches. Fingers crossed

But even if the Komodos were ready to go right now, I imagine RED might hold off from taking orders-- it's gotta be difficult to release a product into such an uncertain market, where capital is constrained and most upcoming production has been cancelled or put on hold indefinitely.

I'd also guess that there are also serious constraints on the sales and support staff that RED would typically want available at the time of a product launch.

I'd guess that it's possible the Komodo Stormtroopers go out, though-- there might well be enough RED fans who are comfortable making the investment and providing the rest of us with test footage.

The new sharpness test: at what distance can a given lens/sensor combo resolve the fine print on the back of a bottle of hand sanitizer ;-)

I had planned on getting one within minutes of having the opportunity to buy one just like I’ve done with every Red camera since the Epic-M. But the way things are going there is pretty much no chance that will happen this time around.
