  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who is RED?

There will be a lot of R1's to pick up. Personally I am still a sucker for the M sensor, too. Not as sensitive, but it has a very pleasing personality.

When the "programs" are done, I guess you can pick up a R1 M for well bellow 10k USD.

And that IS a professional camera. You just need to light a bit, but that is really not all bad.

It amazes me how much people read into this stuff. We'll tell you what's going on. You don't need to guess.

Jim

I must admit that I was also looking for the post saying : "Scarlet is dead" because you tackled the prosumer camera (industry) in your official announcement.

Saying that RED is a company dedicated to professional cinematography is nothing less we, reduser, expect from RED. It could be a statement for a business presentation but sounds strange for us.

I also thought it was a price increase statement as this is common place in the industry : big announcement and telling it is pro means big prices.

Good that RED stays unique!

Patrick

I think if Jim will write ony day here: "That's all. The Apocalypse will be tomorrow!".
Most of people here will write: "Awesome! Amazing! Congratulation! Cool! I am impressed!, Best news I've heard today".:))) There are a lot of problems in the nearest future for us RED's waiters - price, date! Why are you so happy?:))

Yep fully agree with you mate. It seems that these people are under a spell or hypnotised. Yes Jim, whatever you say Jim, can I kiss your but anymore Jim. Jeez, no wonder this camera has taken a lifetime. All Jim and RED hears is that whatever they do, "it's bloody brilliant!!!"

I suggest you head over to DVXUSER to get some perspective on this Jim.

Cheers

Oh, I guess some fanboy moderator will be deleting my account... just about... now! Haha

Would I always like the best of the best? Sure! Can I afford it? No!

so then ... what?

... since making a little film or big movie has so much to do with planning, organizing, restructuring ...

... it is hard for me to grasp how "the filmmaker" seems to be unable to apply better thinking to a relatively small camera funding issue.

(speaking of scarlet - jeeezzuz, it is not a bunch of SONY CINEALTA CAMERAS with optics and stuff for 200K-300k - ehm ... for 10% (??) of SCARLET PERFORMANCE ... )

Stuff costs money. Making stuff happen costs money. If there is no money, it needs a better plan. Or a genius to invent, what is needed, then the price of admission is TIME.

So then ... what?

Pick your path.

Right move, clears the air, pro cameras for pros, Red is Red no prosumer products is good news.

I will be waiting to buy Scarlet S35 once more 1 or 2 years! I think 1,5! Because I need cinema camera for about 20K! Not more! I can't compromise with 5d MARk or G2 or AF100 it is fake of cinema, not cinema. But I just want to say that it will be long and hard 1-2 years! I can't do it in silence!:))) I have no camera, I have no projects to do so I have a lot time to write posts here about my revenge for RED for these 2-3 years waiting:))))

hahaha, got to hand it to the moderators on here. You're quick! No wonder the forum is full of post stating how everything is great. You just delete the one that contradict that. Isn't that what all the famous dictators did through history?

Scarlet will fill a hole in market. I have an hvx200 and its now time to replace that. Since I do alot of keying and post production all prosumer cameras I looked at is a step in the wrong direction. So I looked at pro cameras and I cant afford to get a camera priced as a new car (atleast where im now in life). But the scarlet will be true revolutionary with all its features, raw, highres etc. And it have an incredible nice price tag.

this is what iv pm'd you

Hey Richard ,
Man you should try and tone down a bit. This is hopefully a well received & civilized environment... if not exactly how you would have liked to perceived
it.The majority seem to get along please can you try and be a little more diplomatic in your reasoning .

Thanks mate

Nope. Just the ones that say things like:

Richard, DVXUser can best be described as a forum for those using prosumer equipment. Not an insult, just an honest observation.

Of course there are many extremely talented people using DVX's, HVX's, XH's, EX's, but those are not professional digital cinema cameras. Just the truth. Even Canon's new XF's that cost up to $8K are not digital cinema cameras. According to Canon they are designed for ENG and sports, which is why they have 1/3" chips b/c they allow a very wide zoom range.

Even Sony doesn't consider their F23's and F900's as true digital cinema cameras, yet they've been used for it extensively. Their true pro digital cinema camera is the F35, and it costs over $100K. Their new SRW9000PL (just released) is around $70K. To upgrade to SLog, SGamma and 4:4:4, you need an add-on board that cost additional about $10K. And you still need an HDCAM-SR deck of some sort to get the footage into your computer.

So Red's first offering has blown away the competition on many fronts, esp. price... and it has created absurdly unrealistic expectations.

Red could make no other camera than the Red One probably for the next five years, and dine out on that one offering just fine, esp. given Red's constant tweaking and improving.

What I don't understand is your ire towards Red. They don't owe you an SI-2K or F23 for the price of a high-end 1/3rd chip AVCHD camera. So while I'm sure you are disappointed, I don't get the hate.

P.S. I just read Jason's post above, and I actually regret I took the time to write to Richard.

I'm not worried that RED is going to make anything less then pro class cameras. My worry is just that too many models eat too much time before I get my hands on a EPIC S35 :)

personally I am not getting my knickers in a twist...
the scarlet specks has changed so many times over the years that I have adopted a 'wait & see' approach. When it's actually here, we will know if it is worth the wait. In the meantime I am buying the gear that is already on the market to do the jobs in hand.

So... still Scarlet?

So... still Scarlet?

I'm afraid there's a lot of drama in all this buzz.

It seems quite obvious, now more than ever, that the US $4750 was a psychological limit (already raised up from the initial 3K for $3K tag and aggressive marketing policy/strategy).

With new tools like the AF-100/101 beyond new DSLRs, the market has been continuing to reduce the price entry. So, this increase is towards the current trend. Even Panasonic has lowered from US $5999 to US $4,995 MSRP. Reaching the streets for $4795.00 [LINK] even before its release.

Any doubts about the Scarlet original price's contribution on this price target from Panasonic part? I don't have any. I even think they're now regretting themselves why they didn't wait for more a few days before announcing/confirming their price list, DSLRs weight aside.

Should RED throw away for others what has wisely been building from day one as its best supporting basis (I mean, what it is a way harder to build up), a potential market?

Well, I believe it had been better to offer this unique and welcome feature (for more than 50% me included) as mere option, if possible IMHO. Besides, as I could express myself [LINK] when voted yes in the infamous poll that will make now history @ RED.

I hope this may not interfere with RED success in the future. We all need it. We customers need it. RED employees as well. We can all help get RED to succeed. Not exactly, praising people to leave RED or mimicking with the traditional «yeah, cool» everything emotionally written during a typical hot-spot. Let the dust just settles down.

We all need it. We customers need it (...)
Otherwise, 1080p can become poorly enough and nobody wants it, right? ;-)

If there wouldn't be another reason, RED RAY oblige. Just my $0.2...

Then we thought we could extend it down a bit to the prosumer level. Apparently, that was a mistake.

It was a mistake. The signal to noise ratio and the quality of reduser behavior was a lot better when you had people reaching up to meet what the camera could do, rather than RED reaching down to meet price points.

The prosumer market is flooded with great cameras at deflationary price points. As Gavin said, "a race to the bottom that you can't win."

Full steam ahead.

It's more exciting competing with Arri and Alexa than DSLRs.

You've got our support. We want the best camera system that technology and smart brains like Graeme and others will allow. No compromises. This is what you've been about all along, isn't it? Even before Red.
