Hi,

sorry for the dummy question...received my Komodo yesterday, I wanted to use my Atomos V with SDI module, but don't get a signal, is the SDI cable to slow/cheap?
I got this one: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0...RJ34HC89169P2MCW&pd_rd_w=mLvX4&pd_rd_wg=qlSng
..pretty cheap..?

Tried various settings both on Atomos & Komodo SDI output settings, could not find a proper "tutorial" or info's which would help me solving this problem..

Thank you very much!

Roman

well I'll describe my problem a little bit more in detail hoping to get an answer...

I am trying to use my Komodo with the Ninja V with the SDI module adapter...I've read in the internet it should work...bought a 10$ sdi cable which says it supports 4k@60hz so I thought that would be enough...?
Is there anything else I need to look for when using sdi cable with the Komodo?

Is there anything else which could cause the problem?

Every help is appreciated! Thank you very much!

PS: this is my first video with the Komodo if you want to take a look: https://youtu.be/YDurYjSj7Wg

Hello Roman-- I don't see a problem with the cable itself, if it's rated for 4k/60.

-To start, I'd try testing the cable on another set-up to see if it works with other devices. It is possible that you got a defective cable.
-Have you confirmed that the Atomos itself works? I'd test it with another SDI source (such as camera or output from a computer via an SDI/BNC convertor from Blackmagic), if possible. If you don't have those available, at least make sure HDMI works-- you can even plug in a DVD player or similar.
-You've tried this, but in case not: have you tried outputting a lower resolution signal from the Komodo SDI port? If the cable works, but only performs to lower spec, then you should get an image on the Atomos that way.
-Are you able to test the SDI out from the Komodo with any other device? That may tell you whether there's an issue with the Komodo.

If you can't test each piece in these other ways, it will be hard to identify the problem.

I was going to buy the "Atomos AtomX SDI" to use my Ninja V on the Komodo, so any update on this issue will be very helpful. Thanks!

did u check the ninja v and SDI module?
the ninja v should be set to SDI in mode. also, the connection of the SDI module and the monitor is fragile, u can check if the connector look fine.

I'm using the Ninja V with Atom-X SDI module and a simple generic SDI cable without issue, if you need another data point.

Only downside is the Ninja V fan is louder than the Komodo!! Wish I could replace the Ninja V fan with something quieter....

HTH!

Cheers,

Paul :)

I've been using lots and lots of cables so far, but if you are looking to start and care about 4K transmission.

Mainly in my kit are SmallHD and Canare 12G-SDI cables.

For 4K anything labelled 12G SDI should work.

Hi all, I'm waiting for my Komodo to reach these shores, Ireland! In preparation I have ordered the SmallHD monitor with Red camera control and cable. Perhaps a stupid question, but do I still need an SDI cable as well?

Many thanks

Paul

Yes. The way it works is there's the SDI for the Monitor Feed and the Control Cable for the GUI interface. Usually new SmallHD monitors typically come with an SDI cable included, so check "what's in the box" for what you ordered.

Thank you so much, just checked and there is one in the box.

Get a couple more! Even the good ones eventually fail. And they usually fail just as you're about to roll on something important deep in a forest somewhere. :-)

Can we assume it’s safe to run a standard HD SDI cable out of Komodo to a monitor which only supports 1920x1080? or should a 12G cable be used in all cases for the monitor feed regardless of the monitors maximum resolution? I have both 12G and HD SDI cables, so really just asking if there is rule here, or if this can go either way..thanks!

I second this question and add one more:

is there an easy way to tell what flavor of SDI a cable you already own is? Should one expect to see a certain marking on the cable, or a particular gauge wire?

Komodo's Operation Guide clearly states:

NOTE: Always use 12G-SDI BNC cables when connecting the camera’s SDI port, regardless of the resolution.

I'm pretty sure you could break something if you set the wrong (higher) resolution and used an HD-SDI cable.

Opening this thread again. Just bought The best 12g sdi cables possible and they are really great, but not for the gimball (Belden Cables NEutrik conectors), the cables are not as flexible as I am used to use on every single camera (arri, different reds, Sony etc.). Dou you guys have solution for this? For example if I run the thing on Ronin, the cable is pushing the balance of the whole thing because the monitor is mounted on the RS 2 leg. Would be great to solve this once forever, as the cable never last so long and for such a short distance, regular 3g sdi cable MUST be more thank ok. Any master here to explain?

Pretty sure you can’t... Did a multi-cam shoot with a friend last week and two of the cams were their Gemini and Komodo. It was just a “normal” SDI cable on the Komodo and we were shooting 4K and 6K. Maybe we just got lucky that it worked, but still pretty sure you’re not going to damage anything. I think the worst that would happen is that it just wouldn’t work.

Taking this thread slightly sideways, Nemal Electronics is streaming a zoom "Tech Talk" webinar on 12G cables and connectors for UHD and broadcast this coming Wednesday (March 10th) at noon, EST.

Here is a link to register:

Nemal is willing to do a custom presentation / Q&A - Would need a minimum of 8 participants.
If there is enough interest, I am willing to facilitate...
Would start a new thread, set a date, etc.

Note: I have no business affiliation with Nemal.
My association is strictly professional (SMPTE)

Is SDI output turned on? I don't have the Komodo in front if me but my DSMC2 needs to have SDI turned on in the monitoring menu (and occasionally cycled on/off/on to get a video feed back).
