  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k WS 36fps and 3k WS 60fps compilation - "Dig Into the Waves"

Really nice work William.

Some of the handhelds remind me of Terrence Malick films.

The night shot of the grass I'm curious about. Did you light that specifically?

Super nice work, William! I love the cinematography, the audio track, and the edit. Additionally, it is nice to see this aspect ratio used to display beautiful scenery, and not just as a higher frame rate enabler. Your work inspires me to want to get out there right now and shoot something!

I'm really interested in seeing some 36fps action with people in motion. If anybody has some, please upload. If not, I'll d/l the beta firmware sometime this week.

I really enjoyed the shot. I really love the look and how dynamic it is, movement too.

What were some considerations made in order to get these great shots? You said natural light, which is awesome. What did it take to accomplish the photography?

Thanks!

Thank you for the comments guys, much appreciated.

Kyle, not much really beyond looking up the sunrise/sunset times and hitting the beach when that was happening. It's half on sticks and half just handheld in DSLR mode. Other than that it was look, point, shoot.

I feel dumb for asking this (I have not downloaded the new firmware yet, and I have been off the board for awhile), but what is the verticle resolution of 4K 3K and 2K widescreen? What is the frame rate for 2K WS?

The new resolutions and max-fps are:
4kWS = 4096*1708 (36fps)
3kWS = 3072*1284 (60fps)
2kWS = 2048*854 (75fps)

+ 5kWS = 5120*2160 (12fps / unchanged)

OH man... I'd really love to see a "4.5kWS = 4480x1920 (24-25fps)" or better a "4.5kWS = 4608x1920 (24-25fps)" in there sooner, rather than later. C'mon RED, you know you wanna.

one more dumb question :)
whats the difference between 4K and 4K WS if i shoot 4K and extract 2.40 image...
You can choose lower compression or higher fps if you shoot cropped, otherwise its the same, no difference.

Another advantage of shooting ws i forgot, you get smaller files/longer runtimes on your mags. ;)

I don't understand how it can't be possible. I'm sure it's very very complicated and not something you just do, and it's probably not the area RED focus most of their attention, but in some way it must be possible, at least the 4480x1920 24 fps. It's less pixels per second then the 4K WS at 36 fps - and even less pixel then the ordinary 4K - if that's any indication.

While I completely agree, I think a better indication is the per-frame mp amount. But even in that case, 4096x2160 = 8.85mp = 4608x1920.

And yes, I'd love it as a hold me over until I can comfortably afford Dragon (Scarlet-D or otherwise). Plus it always grinder my gears that they didn't include it for the much lauded "4.5k = ~4k resolved" thing (the whole reason they included it in the R1mx; to shush the luddites.)

What exactly is DSLR mode? Sorry if this is a dumb question. So you produced this with just the RED, lenses, and some color grading? No filters (ND, grads, etc)?

I have to ask, what lenses did you use?
I would like to know as well!

Thanks!
