  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When it's announced...

That would be lovely! Atleast a update of tech, or target price, not necessarily with specs or what not...i'm trying to adjust my budget for the next 4-5 months and I basically am in a holding pattern for the Scarlet haha. My old Jeep Cherokee is even gargling at this haha.

I believe it was Jim who stated in a recon-post that they would not throw out anymore estimated price points. So the next announced price for the SCARLET should indeed be the final one. But I agree, a small specs-teaser would be nice ;)

Recently decided last minute to purchase a 'fleet' of Scarlets instead of an Epic X, initially, and work up to buying a few Epics. So I'm certainly anticipating with everyone else.
I'm sure we won't hear anything until the concrete announcement date for all things Scarlet, due to their respectable policy of not publicly road-mapping for solid reasons.

Having said that, I have a feeling there are going to be some 'WOW' factors with the Scarlet that we can't even anticipate or imagine. These guys are notorious for those
easter eggs and that's what strikes me as awesome about RED, they take pleasure in our pleasure, they genuinely enjoy not just satisfied, but enthusiastic customers.
They're in it for the right reasons and there responsible generosity is a hallmark of any great business. It's why they breed such happy and loyal customers.

I imagine it's safe to say gear up for some pleasant surprises, and from one REDee to another, I can't wait.

This is also my belief. I'm with you ;)

This is the great thing about the company! I've said it elsewhere. While all the other companies come out with products at a faster rate and more conveniently, your never going to see Sony's, Panasonic's or Canon's CEO on a forum thanking you and informing you on whats coming and sharing the excitement with you.

Only downfall to it all... is hitting refresh on there website like a teen trying to buy tickets to a Justin Beiber concert on ticketmaster.

This long torturous wait will be over someday and well worth it.

I so wish we had a release date.....I would make a desk calendar so everyday when I wake up....I can rip off another piece of paper ultimately showing that I am one day closer.

This thread is titled: "when it's announced..."

It was meant to be about whether or not we'll get advanced notice of Scarlet's release. It's since moved into what specs the camera will have, what price, the actual date it's announced, what the industry will look like by then, an so on... . I think the only thing we all know for sure, is when it's announced, there will be A LOT of people going ape shit.

I am in no way complaining about that. lol

It's going to be a fun ride for the next few months.

Hey everyone. Last I heard the Scarlet fixed was supposed to be around $6k and lately on another forum someone said it's going to actually end up costing $10k? Has anyone at Red hinted at this at all? If so, that is terribly disappointing. I have been dying for this camera since I first heard about it and it seems like the longest I have ever waited for something. First it was $3k, then it kept going up and up til it reached $6k. The HDR though I think made up for it, but $6k is reaching the end point of what I think I can swing for a camera, which really sucks.

I've been really talking up this camera to everyone and now if it's $10k it looks like I may never own one. I hate to say it, but if it goes to near $10k I'm going to have to stick with my T2i, or move to a hacked GH2 or spend the extra money for an FS100, which will end up costing about what the Scarlet was supposed to, minus a lot of the features I really would love (although the low light on the FS100 is astonishing).

I really hope Red comes through with their $6k price tag. If not, sadly I'll have to go GH2 hacked or Sony FS100 (or just keep my T2i) and use the extra money for lighting and other important equipment. It'll be a sad day after such a long wait and being totally excited and anxious about the Scarlet's arrival.

No one knows what the final price will be (besides RED perhaps). The latest estimate that RED put out was 6K - and it still might be that - only RED knows. We'll all know the final price when the camera will be released or announced for release.

If you really want to own the SCARLET but need a camera right now, then I suggest that you rent another camera(from a production budget) until SCARLET will be released. You could also buy another camera now in the hope that you might be able to sell it again to get money for a SCARLET.

Finally, if 10K for the SCARLET is an issue for you, then what about the rather considerable cost of the RED-media and RED-accessories that you might want to get with your SCARLET?

Well, part of the reason worrying about a possible $10k price tags IS the fact that I am considering additional add-ons like Red-Media, etc. I figure $6k camera + accessories adding up to say $10k is better than the camera itself being $10k before even adding those accessories, which might push it into the $15k area. That would be a no go for me, sadly.

Currently, I have a T2i. I do love it and the new Cinestyle picture profile looks awesome. The low light capability constantly impresses me and I know it can deliver great results, but I really want the dynamic range capability of the Red, the ability to push the image more in post, not to have to worry about the artifacts the T2i sometimes has, etc. I do worry about the Scarlet's low light capability disappointing me because of the much smaller sensor, but I'm hoping since it's so professional it will at least match the T2i since there is no line skipping and such. I'm really interested in the 120FPS mode and HDR mode as well. Both, I feel will come in handy big time.

I'm considering getting the GH2 hacked to possibly replace my T2i for now since I finally found a low cost fast wide angle solution. I love how clean the video is on the hacked version even at high ISO. I'm not really "In need" of a camera now. I'm saving each month waiting and waiting for the Scarlet. I'm trying to get as much practice with cameras and everything before I go into shooting a project, so I'm more in the planning phase. Scarlet right now is just a dream that I hope to come true by some next spring or summer at least.

...not to mention the extremely annoying rolling shutter issue with DSLR's! Yes, as much as I'm impressed with DSLR's, I'm just as much disappointed with their numorous comprimising artifacts at present time.

Personally, I'd advice you to expect an increase if we refer to the estimated 6K. That way you won't be disappointed - heck, you - all of us - might end up being very positively surprised with the final pricing :)

As I understand, Scarlet's low light capability should greatly exceed any of the current DSLR's video mode. Also remember, the sensor in any RED camera are truly dedicated for high level motion picture photography - it is of the MX sensor-family and should therefore provide you with amazing image quality similiar to the RED ONE MX and EPIC, except for the resolution density.

Some say that shooting with especially DSLR's make you a better cinematographer with pro cameras (must be due to some of the technical similarities between actual movie cameras and DSLR's), so keep up the practice I'd say! Hehe, and if you're still saving up, you aren't at least in such a hurry to get one(SCARLET) like so many other people. Kind of a unexpected priviledge I think ;)

The price confusion over RED is partially due to the modular mindset, partially (I believe) due to the excitement people have over the product causing them to forget what it is like to purchase a camera, and partially due to RED's announcement policy.

First, the modular mindset. RED will be selling the body alone. But purchasing just the body will be useless - it needs a human interface, storage, power, and monitoring to become effective. The human interface could be a REDMOTE, side handle, or a touch screen. The storage could be an SSD, CF (assuming they are still offered) or even an old RED-DRIVE or REDRAM. Power could come from a single REDVOLT in the side handle, a 2x REDVOLT module, or a 4x REDVOLT. It could also come from a RED BRICK or any number of V-mount batteries, etc. Monitoring could be an EVF, an LCD, a touch-screen LCD, or - using the Pro I/O - both EVF and LCD. So how much is that camera going to cost you? There's no way to say, because it varies so much based on individual configuration.

Second, that people forget what buying a camera is like. Forget about modularity, just look at a simple camera. Like the T2i you mentioned or even something a little more purpose built - like the AF-100 or the F3. You buy the whole camera at once - no modules! How simple from a pricing perspective! Except for extra batteries. And extra media. And a new tripod, because its several pounds heavier. And a conversion mount for those Canon/Nikon lenses. Well, now there's a good bit more expense there.

Third, that years ago said one thing. And then they said another. And then another. Many people, used to a different model of consumer interaction, didn't take the "Everything will change. Count on it." statement to heart.

--

As has already been said? How much will anyone's particular Scarlet package cost? We will know when, if not slightly before, they go on sale. That's the new policy. Up until then, it's all conjecture based on previous statements which - as we have all experienced now - can change.

RED will be selling the body alone. But purchasing just the body will be useless - it needs a human interface, storage, power, and monitoring to become effective.

If we are talking about the SCARLET Fixed, then it will most likely still be sold as an (almost) fully ready-to-shoot "unit" - and not "body only" (like the rest of the RED camera-series incl. SCARLET interchangeable). All indications has lead us to believe that the package will at least (more stuff was mentioned in the "package") incl. Body+Lens, 5" touch screen, SSD side module(confirmed), power supply & travel charger. All the way back to when they made the first increased price-point from 3K USD, it was clear that it would not be "body only" for the SCARLET-F (as with the interchangeable). Though things can absolutely change (with RED), there haven't been any indication that SCARLET-F would be sold as "body only" - and with a lens fixed to the body, it would seem curious that they would consider selling it with nothing else incl...

Still, due to the modular concept of the system, people need to realize what they are getting themselves into with a professional camera like a RED camera. Like the cameras, the accessories are top of the line, super quality, most of it also fully compatible with the present time best digital cinema motion picture camera in the industry - EPIC. You're not only buying a camera, you're investing in the RED program, and as an investment in motion picture cameras/systems - RED's the best deal in the game.
