  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When it's announced...

Body+Lens, 5" touch screen, SSD side module(confirmed), power supply & travel charger.

Do we know what the powers supply is?

RedVolt or Red Brick? (I would think RedVolt because it seems thats it would be the most ideal option)

If its a RedVolt, Wouldn't that mean we would need a side handle or rear module? So will one of those be included?

Obviously we don't know whats going to be in the final package but I wasn't sure if they had mentioned anything about that yet.

...not to mention the extremely annoying rolling shutter issue with DSLR's! Yes, as much as I'm impressed with DSLR's, I'm just as much disappointed with their numorous comprimising artifacts at present time.

Personally, I'd advice you to expect an increase if we refer to the estimated 6K. That way you won't be disappointed - heck, you - all of us - might end up being very positively surprised with the final pricing :)

As I understand, Scarlet's low light capability should greatly exceed any of the current DSLR's video mode. Also remember, the sensor in any RED camera are truly dedicated for high level motion picture photography - it is of the MX sensor-family and should therefore provide you with amazing image quality similiar to the RED ONE MX and EPIC, except for the resolution density.

Some say that shooting with especially DSLR's make you a better cinematographer with pro cameras (must be due to some of the technical similarities between actual movie cameras and DSLR's), so keep up the practice I'd say! Hehe, and if you're still saving up, you aren't at least in such a hurry to get one(SCARLET) like so many other people. Kind of a unexpected priviledge I think ;)

Wow, So the Scarlet fixed might even beat the Sony FS100 in low light despite the much smaller sensor? That would be absolutely amazing, because the Sony is much superior to even the 5D Mark II in low light and more on the level of the Nikon DS3, which has mind blowing low light. I saw a video where the Sony was lit with just a single candle light using the KIT lens and still was plenty acceptable. I wish I could have seen it with a fast lens.

I can see why having a DSLR would make someone a better cinematographer, because the lower dynamic range means you have to learn how to control your lighting setups and ratios better. Higher dynamic range should allow a camera to more easily use natural light and look more natural with it. One of the points in using fill lights and such is to get a camera to see the difference between lights and darks more the way the human eye perceives them. The higher the dynamic the range the closer a camera comes to viewing the difference in lighting ratios between lights and darks the way the eyes see and the easier it is to light. That's how I see it.

Well, a power supply wouldn't need to be anything more spectacular than a AC power adaptor for a DSMC :)

The side handle was in my belief never incl. in the "package". The following is my own personal view and speculation: With a concept as brilliant as the DSMC's, I'd think it to be against their(RED) own vision to exclude a side handle in a SCARLET-F package. It just seems wrong and out of character of RED if that would end up being the case. RED have repeatedly shown themselves as a uncomprimising strong leading company in their field(and beyond), so I'd think that excluding the side handle would be like going against this uncomprimising nature - and statement that the DSMC is. This is just my belief. Truth could be completely different - I naturally wouldn't know :)

I seem to recall in a former "announced" SCARLET-F package, that there was a REDvolt incl. but no side handle...maybe back then the REDvolt was inserted into the body? I don't know...

I agree with you, every time I've seen a picture or video of the Scarlet, its almost always had the side handle on it. The only pictures that I've see that didn't have a side handle were some of the very first renders when it was "3k for $3k".

might just have a dummy handle or none, they have stated there will most likely be multiple packages, so who knows they could range from only having a touch screen for control and menu access (cf,redbrick, charger,?) all the way up to rear modules a bomb evf, redmote, side handle, and a clutch. Oh and I believe David was referring to buying just the body and lens which has been said before by red that it will be possible, once again choices gotta love em.

But we will not know until they tell us, so all you can really do is go on with your life and check in for the announcement, because talking about it isn't going to make things go faster.

Have a good one!

I think RedVolt... if you go to the store it has a check next to Scarlet there, also if you look under the 4 pack.

Yes. REDvolt's are designed for the DSMC cameras. He probably meant what the mentioned "power supply" in the SCARLET package could be :) At some point it was mentioned that a REDvolt would be included. If the side handle isn't included in the SCARLET-F package, then what use would you have for the REDvolt? ;)

And (not that it would mean anything - but it says a lot about what RED thinks) Ted repeatedly mentioned the SCARLET-F setup that he was going around with on CES and NAB something along the way of "nice working configuration". Indeed it would be :)

There will have to be some way to power the camera included in the "package". Whether its the side handle, not likely considering the huge price jump, or the module adaptor + the dual battery module and two red volts + 1 travel charger....

After adding up the numbers for 2012 prices I see that those two battery options cost the same price $1750.00, interesting...

$515.00 for two REDVOLTS and a travel charger
$1750.00 for either the DMSC side grip or dual battery module + module adaptor
$1950.00 for the 5.6in monitor
$1500.00 for the side SSD module (RED has made it clear that it will come standard)
--------------------
$5715.00

What ever the camera costs ? ($4500.00???)
=
$10,215.00??? I'm guessing but it looks good for the camera to cost around 10k. Still a great price.

I wouldn't be so fast to say that. I haven't seen any specifics posted about the low-light capabilities of the Scarlet, and it's something I've been curious about too.

Nuka: do you have a link or some info showing that? You made mention that it'll greatly exceed DSLRs, but again I haven't heard any specifics.

It will be from the MX-family of sensors, so we know the low-light performance will be good, but the zoom is also an F2.4, so you'll loose a few stops over the fast primes you might have for your T2i. I think we can expect great things from Scarlet in regards to low-light performance, I just would jump the gun and start ranking it against other cameras at this point.

Thats awesome still! At NAB weren't they talking about the configuration coming out to be around $6,000 though? They seemed like they kept talking about the package being in that range, including the monitor and everything on board for what they were shooting. I understand the changes and price changes, but I imagine it could still be a bit less?

It might. It might not. We really can't say because we haven't seen anything from Scarlet that show definitely how it runs in low light.

There are a couple of elements that would make it possible, though.

The 2/3" sensor, for instance, will give you more DOF for your F/T-stop, meaning you can open up more and still have comparable usable DOF in comparison to S35. It also matters how you are viewing it. In general, the more compressed something is, the more noise (as well as other fine detail) gets lost in the muddiness and artificial smoothness of the image. Similarly, the more something is super-sampled, the cleaner the final product.

So if Scarlet footage was being released at 1080p, it may come out quite clean, even at the highest ISOs because of the downsampling from the 3K original to 1080p. Delivery compression may also be something of an equalizer, in that even if the Scarlet footage was a bit noisier in its original state, compressing it for the web may smooth all that out and match the MPEG4 AVCHD coming out of the FS100. Lastly, having the 3K REDRAW to begin with may allow one to run more efficient de-noise plugins on the Scarlet footage.

All that speculation being done, I return to my original point. We wont know until someone with an early model decides to go out in a field at night and test it.

Yes this is true but that was before the price increase to everything that was posted. Who knows, we'll see soon.

Yeah I mentioned I understood the price increases. I guess even with the initial package increasing. I have a hard time seeing there anticipated release package estimated at $6,000 going up to 10 G's. I'm not saying I won't spend that much, as I realize I'll get there easily with media and batteries. Just me though. I hope we know super soon. I'm getting ancy, as I'm sure many of you have been for the long wait!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry. What will be, will be. We can all talk, theorize, and speculate, but in the end RED knows what's up - we want to pay as little as possible. And they will give us what they feel is the best camera for that money.

Well said.

Sit and wait, that's all we can do.

2012 was always my prediction. Still is.

This time next year for the Scarlet Interchangeable.

Epic S somewhere in between.

I'm actually surprised there isn't a pool going somewhere for release dates...
