  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When it's announced...

With an external recorder you loose raw and r3d's and quite possibly the strong point of all these camera's. I would have spent my money on SSD's over the Bomb but each of us have our own needs. Once again it's your life do as you will, but purchasing any other evf for much cheaper, then getting SSD's and shooting raw makes a lot more sense to me than using a bomb evf and recording to cheap off the shelf media to prores or something giving up raw. though you say you are shooting long form so who am I to tell you what will work, but in that same right expecting the media to drop half it's price soon is no way to look at things otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

to each their own, I'm just trying to point out that Raw and redcode raw is a very important aspect of these camera's and to just throw it away doesn't make sense to me, might as well get a f3, or a fs100, and rent specialty camera's for the shot or shoots you need them for.

Steve I do NOT underestimate the power of RAW :)
Just my ability to FUND it and/or charge my clients for it - for now. Personally I think the REDs are MORE than just their RAW performance. The quality of construction, all the other amazing features, the attention to operator/user ergonomics, the expandability, the price, the.... need I go on? I am buying the Scarlet as I expect it to be my LAST professional camera (been doing this for 30 years), so it's future-proofing (well, near-future proofing) will serve me very well in the years to come. I mean, I am STILL using my beloved BVW-400 betacam NOW (bought new in 1990 for $40K) ! - all the while awaiting something beyond all these rinky-dink prosumer-ish HD handicams Sony, JVC, etc. foisted on those who couldn't swallow the leap to a $60K HD Sony, etc. (Like: me) Now I should qualify all this in saying that living and working in the middle of Alaska has afforded me some degree of "insulation" from the Must-Have-Gadgets/Gear/Cameras that you guys face in big markets with a phone-book full of competition. My betacam made me a Big Fish in this wee pond (Big State, small population) for many years - and expect the Scarlet to do the same.

My Ol' BVW was an amazing camera for its time - it has literally made me million$ (small "m") - and its EVF (thank you Sony) spoiled me and thus the $3.2K plunge for the BOMB - a device I will use gratefully for the life of the camera. Seems silly (for me) to step "beyond HD" while stepping backwards with some plastic-y $600 EVF. I realize one could argue the same for SSD/RAW of course, but bear in mind my SD background. Hell, I'm jazzed just to finally be shooting HD! ;D
Meanwhile, I will let the Market decide what SSDs will sell for and I am happy to sit on the side-lines, knowing that I can jump in any time for a bit of RAW-love - Thank You RED!
