  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When it's announced...

So random question here. I'm getting to the point where I really need to know how much $ to allocate for this camera. Am I safe to guess $10,000 would take care of it? I have to get a new car too and want to put away enough to have an up an running kit. I already have a tripod/Mic's/audio recorder. I know it's purely speculation from anyone but just getting in a corner with multiple purchases to make. Might I want to set aside even more for the Fixed?

I don't think RED will go over the 10k-mark, so, yes, i think you are safe with 10k for a basic kit.
The bigger question is, what will be included in that kit? I'm not talking about accessories that can be bought later, just the real basic stuff to be able to start real shooting. How many REDVOLTs and REDMAGs? And how many of both will you need to do your shoots? It's better to assume there is just one battery and one media included in the basic kit. So, to be really safe, i would add some more money for media and batteries on top of that 10k-mark.

And don't forget the REDMAG-reader.

I'm still counting on RED to surprise us somehow with the final kit and it's price, but i think ts better to be really safe.

All good points. That is really all I want to know from RED, I don't care about the Specs, I'm sold on RED, I just want the price to come out sooner than later. I shoot skiing/surfing so I'm hoping to have a 64/128 SSD, and get the REDVolt Battery pack. I've thought about Bricks too since I shoot outside in the cold, but I'm moving around alot and think it would be easier to just drop them in and out of the Side Handle.

I hope that after waiting for so long the price isn't much more than 6k as was pretty excitedly stated on and around NAB-time...

Am I safe to guess $10,000 would take care of it?

After so many hints that a kit would be "around $6,000", I can't really see it going up to more that $10,000. In making predictions, I consider both the best and worst case scenarios, and reality always ends up, without fail, somewhere in between. For me, $6K is the best; $10K is the worst. It'll be somewhere in between I'm sure. I'm actually in the same boat. I'd love a closer estimate of a price point. I've made out two budgets for my purchases, one with a package at around $6K, and the other around $10K. I can put a pretty full kit together at the $10K price point. But if it comes out around $6K, I have a list of other goodies to buy.

You hear me RED? Either way, you're getting my money! ;)

I think it'd be best to work around a $10K price point, and prepare for that. If it comes out under, all the better for you. If not, at least you were prepared.

Right now I would happily walk all of the way to RED headquarters....from NC.... with $10k in 1 dollar bills to get the scarlet right now! Red...tell me when to start walking!

you could probably start now, you'll surely want to stop and do some sight seeing along the way : ) I'm on Maui and ready to start swimming, haha..

I was in Maui from April-June working with a guy named Jace. He knew a guy named Elliot who was shooting a RED down there. Maybe you do? I was also hoping for it to release while I was down there! I would've swam to get it if I had too. But the water is much warmer where your at :)

I didn't necessarily want to make another thread for this but at 3K do we know what frame rates will be available with HDRx? Is it up to 96fps like the epic in 5K since they're running 120fps at 5K on the epic? Or is this something that we've never learned about.

I too will Man-Up at whatever the actual price-point is for the Scarlet Fixed, with an eye on maybe trading up to a Cinema (they still calling the Interchangeble that?) later. Idea of IS lenses is appealing! For me the big stumbling block is going to be the media. We do a fair amount of long-form and I just can't justify (OK, afford) another $3-4K for RED SSD, esp knowing that at some point in the not-too-distant future these will be 1/2 their current price... or LESS.

I will definitely be getting a 3rd party recorder, likely the Sound Devices (SD) PIX and going for ProRes files. Nice to have a "Beyond HD" camera of course, but realistically my clients all want HD final product for the foreseeable future. And those that want more can cough up the $$ to rent a crate of SSDs. A 256Gig SD PIX SSD is $630! I will probably spring for a 64GB RED SSD just so I can record 120+FPS as needed, or the occasional HDRx scene...

My big splurge was the BOMB, which decorates my edit suite for now....

Last we heard it should be 120fps at 3k. That was the original spec target and I expect they will hit it.

With an external recorder you loose raw and r3d's and quite possibly the strong point of all these camera's. I would have spent my money on SSD's over the Bomb but each of us have our own needs. Once again it's your life do as you will, but purchasing any other evf for much cheaper, then getting SSD's and shooting raw makes a lot more sense to me than using a bomb evf and recording to cheap off the shelf media to prores or something giving up raw. though you say you are shooting long form so who am I to tell you what will work, but in that same right expecting the media to drop half it's price soon is no way to look at things otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

to each their own, I'm just trying to point out that Raw and redcode raw is a very important aspect of these camera's and to just throw it away doesn't make sense to me, might as well get a f3, or a fs100, and rent specialty camera's for the shot or shoots you need them for.

Exactly. Good for you Stu. And you probably should follow through since you already got a Bomb EVF. But if I were you and you are going to use a 3rd party recorder why not just shoot something cheaper? I mean if your output is 1080p anyways. Which most of ours probably will be but still losing the ability to edit the RAW 3K files would probably just make me get something cheaper if thats what I had planned.

I'm in the same boat though. Honestly I'll pay for the camera, as I will for the media. Even if I get it before it drops in price I'll buy it. If I'm getting a RED I want to get everything I can out of it.

Stu, if you do want to shoot raw watch the For sale part of the board for SSD media. I've noticed a couple different people cruise through there when they reach an end of the production and sell all of there SSD's for a good chunk cheaper.

Not sure about that, because there was a 1000USD-price-increase just for extra-power thats needed for HDRx.

That was to get HDRx at all in the camera(before the 1k increase there was none), and how it works is by taking two exposures (not sure how exactly so don't jump on me) but this means double the recording thus double the processing so you will only be able to shoot HDRx at half the maximum frame rate(I think) so if it's 120 that means the max HDRx would be 60. Now that is what we were told a while ago(I think) who knows what it will be on release.

Once again these are questions to ask when release of the cameras is immanent. At this point Red has gone quiet on all fronts deciding not to release info until the project is done and shipping(or nearing shipping) so lets just wait a little longer, we've waited this long I'm sure we can stand a few more months (hopefully).

stay patient, and positive, peace!

Indeed. The idea behind the price increase was to get HDRx into the cameras.

Both Epic-X/M and Scarlet should be able to shoot their native resolution (5K and 3K, respectively) at 120fps. HDRx always results in a 50% maximum frame-rate reduction since the camera is recording two frames (the regular A track as well as the additional relatively underexposed X track) for every "normal" combined frame. Just as the Epic-X/M has a max regular frame rate of 120fps at 5K, but a max HDRx frame rate of 60fps at 5K, I would expect the Scarlet to have the max regular frame rate of 120fps at 3K, but a max HDRx frame rate of 60fps at 3K.

That is, of course, assuming that the last stated news items from RED regarding max frame rates remain unchanged in any direction. And it also throws out the possibility of "burst" frame rates.
