  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When it's announced...

I think this discussion somewhat useless.

Do two products within the same sphere compete? Sure. A bike and a plane are both methods of travel. Both are useful and pragmatic methods of travel. And both suited to certain types of travel. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, their costs and their rewards, and are used every day by millions around the globe.

Now, surely, I'd be an idiot to make an unequivocal statement such as "Planes are clearly the best; bikes are useless" or "Bikes are a game changer, no more crowded cabins, no more security lines, and no more delayed flights - everyone should just ride everywhere".

I feel the same is true, and that pretty much everyone can recognize it, about any two types of imaging devices. DSLRs have come into their own; good for them. They have a place and a purpose. Digital cinema cameras have also become exceedingly popular in the last half decade; good for them as well. They have a place and a purpose.

Sometimes the two overlap a bit out of desire, not necessity. As in the case of a man who makes a long bike trip to see the scenery, so might someone produce a piece on a DSLR for just that purpose - they want to shoot it on a DSLR.

And sometimes the two overlap out of necessity. As in the case of a man who has a bicycle but not much else - he must make his journey with what he has.

There is no real argument here, no substance. This is not a zero sum game. We just have two different products which aren't mutually exclusive, yet it seems many wish they were.

So does anyone think that this post http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?62040-The-future... has anything to do with Scarlets?

I'm sure Scarlet came up in the meeting. And I hope it's a teaser that production is picking up or even ahead of schedule. I'd love to hear that more specifics were locked down on modules and stereoscopic 3D for Scarlet.

In my last post, I made a comment about Scarlet and entry-level products. Then I hear Jim say: "If you bought into the RED program...". I had to smile. Good to know I'm not too far off in my thinking.

This is the kicker for me with Scarlet. Other manufacturers seems fine with letting an unending line of 3rd parties make modules, accessories, etc. RED has the mindset that they are going to make their own, make them fully compatible, and make them with impeccable quality. It will be fun to see what's coming next.

No. 4K 2:1 etc...this is the "standard." Scarlet has become an afterthought I think. If they weren't so far along in production, I'd fear an entire revamp of the camera to accomodate 4K. The stuff coming down the pipe has gotta be 4K stuff. 4K delivery, 4K distribution, acquisition, etc, etc...I think.

Scarlet is the step child that is still loved, but not as much as the first and second born.

How do we know how far along in production they are?

merely speculation and guesstimation I presume. There was a pic of about 20 scarlets posted months ago, although they were only internal, if the Epic X line is well along, I'd imagine scarlet production is not far behind.

They can machine Scarlets like EPICs I assume. Those may have been the only ones in existence.

Correct, my point it, I dont think they would make multiple unfinished scarlets, the physical design for the most part has gotta be completed (at least the fixed lens) so with the parts over seas supposedly being in order, I would say scarlets parts should be also. Cant be too far behind I would guess.

yeah, that I saw. I just assumed he meant they might've been in production already from how he said it. I am not totally sure how Red's system goes as far as phases as to when they release.

They might be...eye is still on the prize, EPIC-X. They say "Scarlet is hot on its heels." So, no way of knowing specific details.

I don't think anyone knows what to anticipate, even RED. They could guess and say but they've been wrong for a couple of years now. They've never had a normal camera release.

Here's to hoping the Scarlet rolls out soon and quickly.

All it takes is the right idea to compliment the visuals that a DSLR can provide a specific vision.

Ok, Eric, that's it - you just got on my shitlist :D I've repeatedly advocated for the use of DSLR's (please dude, read my comments!). I myself used them for some jobs. But I won't use them for everything - like you probably would. Now, please, don't ever abuse my name to get your point across!

Your lists are not my concern. If you make a comment, I will free to express my views on it within the rules of this forum. :p

You said Red and Canon do not compete. I stated my opinion that you are wrong.

...Good for you, Eric. Keep up the "good form". That's really gonna help you in life...(geez)

Cell phone movies have won festival awards, so I suppose they compete with Canon and Red too.

Sure Red and Canon compete on some superficial level, but Red does not compete very well in the consumer price range camera market, and Canon DSLR's do not compete very well in the high end film/video production market. In the low end pro/ high end prosumer market there is some overlap and people will pick whatever suits their needs, taste, and budget.

I thought they were from Jarred's short film, like a behind the scenes thing...? But sure I hope that they are loading up a warehouse with SCARLET-F's somewhere! :)

The idea behind scarlets is that they will be available to people who can afford around $6000 , A machined scarlet would probably be way more money close to cost of original red , so i think its unlikely to happen. A kit price on fixed scarlet with ssd lcd and viewfinder and battery is what i am waiting for. Till then i will be burning the heads of my old gear.

That would be lovely! Atleast a update of tech, or target price, not necessarily with specs or what not...i'm trying to adjust my budget for the next 4-5 months and I basically am in a holding pattern for the Scarlet haha. My old Jeep Cherokee is even gargling at this haha.
