Hi RedUser

long time lurking, first time posting.

What grade monitor should I buy? My budgets 10,000-20,000 USD.

BTW I work on a Mac Pro with a Black Magic Card and in Resolve and 75% is shot on the RED ONE.

The backstory is I work at production company that's expanding. I started out as a editor/grader but now I'm a fulltime grader. We rent monitors for the projects now but final we have enough money to buy a monitor.

What I've been thinking about is the FSI LM-1760W or the e-Cinema DPX but I want to know what else is out there.

Thanks.

I'd certainly recommend you take a look at the TVlogic unit. Certainly worth consideration.

Can definitely vouch for the Flanders we use a few 1770W in the studio which are essentially the same monitor just lighter and good for taking mobile. The TVlogic monitors are nice too, although haven't spent a great length of time with any of them to see what they are like.

I'm far from an expert but I tend to jump around a lot of different suites. Some shock some surprise.

EDIT: Shane you beat me to it.

:-) The quick and the dead Tim. We bought the Cinemage but assessed the TVLogic and would probably have gone with it if we hadn't bought Davio's as well (package deal). Nice screen and a great price point.

I good person to ask this question to would be a colorist on this board named jake blackstone. He seems to know what he's talking about.

good luck. Its a big decision so make sure to get as much info as you can! Plus I'm have not seen if NAB has anything new yet. See if you can get demos .

Of course you always get what you pay for.
eCinema... pm me!! Got some info you might need.

Panasonic Plasma 11-series. I'm so happy with this unit (46"). Just add a dual link hdsdi input board and you're done.

Sony BVML231 or a BVM 20 glass of some sort (Second hand) with Dual 4:4:4 HDSDI inputs.

Dont muck around just buy the best and what most people use, well in Australia anyway!

Since I make my living with DI consulting and color managment for DCI and Filmout, I would say a panel that has IPS backplane, LED backlight and 8bit or better a 10bit panel.

For Apple Color an Apple Cimena 27" LED is perfect and for a DaVinchi an HP DreamColor or an LG Flatron W2420R with HDMI connection...

Of course to use them you need color management...

For just Video all the above are ok...

funny nobody mentions Cinetal, never personally worked with one, but with a 20k budget I always imagined it would be the most coveted. Is it really that overrated? I know Ikan just bought Cinetal too, and no clue how the quality will be anymore.

FSI, in conjunction with the best Panasonic Plasma for client monitoring is a deadly duo.
TV Logic is considered to be on par, and some consider it above the flanders.

if you can hold out and save up a little more, there's always the Sony OLED screens coming out... I think the 24 inch model is gonna be 28 thousand?

but going something like flanders, and a nice big client monitor is economical, and provides great quality. let's you have money set aside for needed things like hardware scopes, calibration techs, etc.

I've been using the TVlogic XVM-245W for the past few months... good monitor. It's served me well.

I used Cine-Tals on the last show. While the feature set was impressive, the picture did not impress me for the price. I do like them, but it's more of a tool than it is a monitor.

It's been a while since I've seen an eCinema DPX, but that's the first place I'll look when I'm thinking about my next monitor purchase. I have good memories from the last time I used one.

WOW. I'm just amazed by how many kind informed people there are at this forum. Thanks everyone for taking time to write here. I came back from work and I've been going through and googling everything you wrote.

It appears that everyone has their own favorite and there are many good choices and a few bad.

After reading many pages of text I'm left with two monitors. The TVlogic XVM-245W as Brook Willard and Shane Betts suggested and FSI LM-1760W/FSI-1770 as Tim Hole, Matt Gottshalk and Tom Wong vouched for and last but not least the Ecinema DPX but I really need to see this monitor i action.

I might look into the Sony BVML231/BVM 20 if I can get it at something like this http://www.kitmondo.com/ViewListing.aspx?lid=307675&prodName=Sony_BVM-L231 or thehttp://www.kitmondo.com/ViewListing.aspx?lid=21287&prodName=Sony_BVM-20-F1E

Q.

Adam Eden.
Do you consider the Sony BVML231 the best in this class? And worth 20,000USD compared to the TVlogic XVM-245W which only cost around 11,000USD? Is it worth spending that extra money?

Tim Hole.
Is the 1770 a better monitor? If say about 20% of much jobs are grading out on the set.

Corrado Silveri .
Sorry but that just can't be anywhere close to the TVlogic at the price it would be crazy. I would have to see them side by side first but that looks like a really good client monitor if I go for something around 10,000 USD.

Evangelos Achillopoulos.
Thanks so much I'll use your list.
IPS backplane, LED backlight and 8bit or better a 10bit panel.

Tom Wong.
It's really not profitable for me to spend more than 20,000USD. I live and work in Sweden here we are experts at making good looking stuff for very little money so to go over 20,000 dosen't make sense even though thats where I also want to go. I do belive it will be something like flanders or Tvlogic and and really nice Client monitor and some hardware later on.

Brook Willard.
If you had to pick one the Ecinema DPX or the TVlogic XVM-245W?
I enjoyed reading the An Epic First Day by John Schwartzman. Can you tell me about what to think about when working DIT for the Epic. I'm very excited about the Epic but have only had the chance to work with it once and really want to learn more but since there are only 3EPics in Europe I'll have to wait.

Thanks everyone for taking your time to write here and I hope I someday can help you.
Sorry for the late reply toke me a few hours to go though all this.

I make TV commercials and online television content. All of my clients expect me to have a SONY BVM and if i didn't they would go elsewhere. And yes I do consider the SONY BVM best in class, thats why it is known as an evaluation monitor.

If you can't afford the LCD one, you can buy a good second hand glass version for around $12-$15K that is full HD with dual link SDI.

We finish on Avid Symphony DX or Avid DS for TELEVISION and TELEVISION commercials.

If you are finishing for web, corporates etc then don't waste your money.

But i would also suggest buying a tektronix WFM 7000 or similar, as thats what I use for colour grading more than the monitor in a lot of cases, especially the diamond gammut feature.

Hi Hampus,
no problem at all!

I have just to point out that we are talking about a solution that costs around 3.500 USD...

And Let me quote Michael Most:

Not "other people." Virtually every major post facility. And this decision was made after extensive testing. Price was not even a consideration. To say it's "not comparable to a high end color grading monitor" is to go against the collective opinions of just about every major chief engineer in Los Angeles. For them, it IS a "high end color grading monitor." The "best" choice for just about everyone was CRT's - and still is, if you can maintain them. But given the current state of technology, the decision to go plasma was not one that was taken lightly. I don't know of any major facility that does HD finishing in L.A. that in a color correction environment uses a CineTal, a TV Logic, or any LCD, period. Including Sony. Broadcast facilities, yes (Fox bought tons of JVC LCD monitors over a year ago). Post facilities doing color correction, no.

He is talkin about the Series 11 of Panasonic... Take a look at this thread:

Cheers!
