  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

I'm working on a whole bunch of things (knee deep into looking technically at Helium), but to the interest of the Dragon 8K VV folks today I took delivery of the new Tokina Cinema Vista Primes. 35, 50, 85mm all T1.5 with a 25mm and 18mm available late in the year and one more likely on the way after that.

I should have time next week to shoot some nice footage with them to share.

The keen thing here is these, outside of glass for say medium format, are the first lenses made with the tolerance of 46.7mm, which conveniently covers 8K FF on Dragon.

I've had a look at the prototypes, but these are indeed production models. I'm curious to dig in with them. They are purely new designed for motion picture use lenses and I already know they don't breathe much at all. More thoughts soon. Maybe a full blown review.

I posted this in another thread, but not everyone will look at it, so I am re-posting here because it is VV related.

Here is an 8K HD VV frame of Kerry Park in Seattle. This is ungraded. Just the default 709/1886 output from IPP2. It was an overcast day near sunset, so it is pretty dull, but super clean (low noise). There are six images in the zip file:

1. Source Image @ 7680x4320
2. Image number 1 with deconvolution applied.
3. This is a UHD version of number 1. (3840x2160)
4. This is a UHD version of number 2. (3840x2160)
5. This is an HD version of number 1. (1920x1080)
6. This is an HD version of number 2. (1920x1080)

The scaling I used is based on this paper on down scaling using SSIM. The scaling is being tuned for QUHD to UHD or 8K to 4K.

You can use your favorite scaling engine to scale images 1 and 2. Right now we are working on adding anti-ringing code to both SSIM and deconvolution (decon) to further improve them. We used a box filter, like the paper, on the images above. We can also use other kernels like Lanczos, but those naturally ring. Once we finish the anti-ringing code for SSIM and decon, we will work on the anti-ringing code for Lanczos.

Update: Forgot to include technical details:
7680x4320 (8K HD), ISO 400, 5:1, IPP2, 709, BT.1886, Otus 85mm @ f/5.6.

I, for one, can't wait to read the results of your testing! I would say I can't wait to read your thoughts, but that might worry some people. :p

Oh my that's amazing. Sooooo sharp - I can see the IMAX 3D text near the lower right hand corner, and I can even pick out some details on the crane in the distant middle right. Also, what lens did you use?

Sorry, I forgot to include that information. I updated the post to include:

7680x4320 (8K HD), ISO 400, 5:1, IPP2, 709, BT.1886, Otus 85mm @ f/5.6.

That would be sweeeeet. I've had great experiences with Lanczos downscaling providing a nice balance of sharpness and naturalness. To get that "flavor" without the ringing sounds fantastic. Go Stacey Go!

On Monday I went to DP Review. I am going back on Saturday to re-shoot everything. I did not realize how uneven the floor is, so my 5K and 4K are not level. This time we will use an external display so we can have better framing. Also need to switch to either the 55mm or 28mm Otus. I ran into the back wall and could not shoot below 4K HD. I would like to shoot 3K HD to show was the 3K Scarlet might have been like and also 2K HD.

Here are some TIFFs, though I am embarrassed to share. :) IPP2, BT.1886, 709 and white balanced off the gray in the center. Otus 85mm at f/5.6. 5:1 compression. I used the exposure tool with the color space set to Log3G10, RWG. The center gray was green at f/5.6. If I used BT.1886 as the gamma space, in camera, then the center box was gray at f/9. I have those images too. This weekend I will just use a light meter.

Wow Stacey, very interesting that Scaling Method, thanks for sharing!

Also a really great Test Scene you chose there, with the 8kVV and the OTUS that is really impressive Detail. I would guess Limits of Lens and even the Air in between Sensor and Skyscrapers are the Limits here than the VV Sensor? (with Limits of course a very very high Limit)

Received my allocation today and RMA. Shipping my RED Weapon 6k Dragon Woven Carbon Fiber wpn-w01071 tomorrow.
With all that's happening, this definitely makes for great news.
I should get my RED Weapon 8K S35 in less then 10 days. Feel free to reach out.

Cant send my CF in, cause of jobs...so someone should be lucky to get their Helium 8K a little bit earlier :P

Thanks Manfred! I'm next on the list, so hopefully I'll hear from them soon.

Is it just me or has it seemed very quiet for VV sensor coming out in the wild for quite a while??

Very few of the VV sensors are passing quality control testing. The last couple shipments have had very poor yields. :(

Jarred said it in the February update from a few days ago that they're remaining hopeful for another shipment in 60 days. You may have seen this as I'm responding to your post that is a week old at this point.

I did see that post Jeff but thanks for the reminder.
Man these seem to be like winning the lottery to ge a few good sensors out of a wafer .

I'm glad to hear they won't just throw them them out there and then wwe are all complaining about things not working as well as we thought they would.
Maybe we will have some news at NAB? I don't know anything but it is on the horizon.
