  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

How do we send in our Weapon to be upgraded to Helium while we wait for the VV? I would LOVE to do that!

Thanks,
Wynn

RED contacts you when your time comes in the queue and asks if you wish to do the temporary (with option to be made permanent) swap.

Thanks, I didn't know how I thought that, here's the quote btw:

I know it is a hard choice... Both are phenomenal.

Brent and I have gotten a bazillion emails the last couple days from 6K weapon owners with 8k VV deposits trying to figure out which way to go. Some of you were lucky enough to get in on the limited run on Friday. Most of you were not.

The reality is that Helium 8K s35 is likely going to start hitting the market in force in October, while you 8K VV peeps continue to wait. And that kinda sucks.

So..... In a few months when we start shipping Heliums, If you would like, for all you Carbon 6K weapons with deposits in for 8K VV, we will pop in a 8K Helium S35 into your 6K Weapon for no charge while you continue to wait. When your VV number gets called.. we will take your camera back and put that in.. or if you want to stay with 8K s35 Helium, you can do that.

Hope that helps.

I am really hoping on the october announcement that there will be a 18.5 mm height helium, right now the big difference for me between alexa and red is red doesn't support full height of a 35mm film camera.

Have any other VV depositers heard from their reps regarding Helium? The launch day is quickly approaching and I would hope we get details before then, considering we've already been waiting a year and a half.

Also an update on VV shipments would be much appreciated as it seems nobody in this thread is yet to receive one...?

AFAIK, only Phil and Mark have been allocated VV Dragons. There are some on high profile feature projects, likely a few in R&D labs and perhaps with unique customers like the DOD/NASA/etc. Why have pre-paid VV waiters not been contacted yet about the "Helium while you wait" deal - good question. I have no idea exactly what it takes to ramp up Helium sensor production. That said, I would hope that as soon as they have the inventory, we would be the first in line. Moreover, if I was Brent and actually had QC'd sensors in stock, I'd start getting the VV waiters Heliumed up before the mad crush of response to the Oct. 11th realignment.

IAC, we should know the score by Oct. 11th at the latest and as one of the very earliest RED customers, I've built up some strong "waiting" muscles over the years - so another 3 weeks doesn't seem like much ;-)

Cheers - #19

Heh, heh... how ironic that I jumped through many financial hoops to get the 8k VV with expectations of being in line for first-in-class 8k. With the non-shipment thereof and the release of the Storm Trooper Helium, and now the Helium-for-all, unless I take the Helium sensor loaner program instead of waiting for 8k VV, I will be last in line to shoot 8k.

Even the loaner Helium will put me late in the 8k capable status. Like I said, irony all over the place. '-)

With the impending announcement for Helium in a little over two weeks, I wonder if RED will want Helium crafted images ubiquitous?

As demand for Helium eclipses Dragon - would this expedient RED towards and all-Helium sensor production?
In 18 months time - could Dragon production be extinguished?

With the number of pre-orders for VV - will the tail-end of upgraders find themselves the last people to be upgrading to Dragon?
If there is a likelihood of this, perhaps switching VV over Helium sensor technology would make for a happier group in the long term?

It would also avoid the pulling-hair-out trying to decide if they want Red best pixels, or MF imagery.
And if Helium VV yields are higher than Dragon ... the whole Dragon production line could be demised sooner.

We built Helium on all new lines, not by replacing Dragon Lines. Dragon is not going away, and we will continue to pump out everything from Raven to Scarlet-W to Weapon Dragons 6k and 8k VV.

Helium doesn't replace Dragon, it augments it. Just like there used to be different film stocks for different situations, we give you options of different sensors for different situations. Even just the format differences between S35 and FF are meaningful with the same sensor let alone a different one.

Jarred, I wonder if you can help me on the path decision, based on the above. Talking about different feelings for each sensor. Or some of the white helium squad.
As a Epic Dragon owner, I can go Weapon Mg now, or wait and lose the upgrade path, to go Epic-W Helium in 2 weeks. I have to decide now for Mg if I want to be in the Dragon family.

I use the RED for both motion and stills. I still work as a professional photographer, and I love the quality of the RED dragon raw for stills.
Which sensor gives more of a classic "photography" feel in your opinion? Helium and Dragon?
I know it is a subjective question. IMHO Leica and Hasselblad have the photography feeling even in digital. Canon feels more modern. Sony and Nkon with older lenses kind of sits in between.

This makes a lot of sense to me, I had accidentally inferred that helium was replacing dragon where what I need is 4 perf s35 sensor coverage. I really love the weapon sensor feel with what your doing in color science, there is this new color "pipeline" I feel with Weapon that just seems to work.

Hi Jarred, Any update at all on VV sensors for upgrade? Between the yield, Panavision and other unknowns to us, there are not many to go around. Do you think anyone will get the VV upgrade notification this year? or before NAB?

I am excited and grateful for the Helium offer. That is just a crazy, in a great way, offer. But, I am also really looking forward to the larger format sensor and its look / visual style. Even the simple pictures that Phil has shared of himself in the hotel are spectacular and so are the ones Mark has shared. I will certainly happily shoot 8K Helium in the meantime. :)

Anyone get allocated?

These things must be made out of ground up fabrege eggs and unicorn tears.

Happy to go make a unicorn cry if that gets the line moving.

This must be a rhetorical question because – as you can imagine – the "Alerts" would flash wild and crazy on RU once us, mere mortals, would get our long awaited allocations. ;-)

Patience is a virtue. Being an early adopter at RED even turns it into an art form...
That doesn't mean "nail biting" got obsolete though... haha! ;-(

Reminds me of the cartoon I once saw of two buzzards in a desert setting on a high-line cross bar, patiently waiting for something to die.

One buzzard turns to the other and says "Screw it... let's go kill something."

I'm thinking this may be the best thinking.

I'm just trying to put myself in the shoes of the various entities currently receiving the VV and take Panavision for instance... they probably do not want to see a lot of VV sensors available to compete against. Mark and Phil would be trusted to use their camera for personal projects (Phil) or to create accessories for the VV (Mark)

I could imagine the VV sensor to not start shipping before 4th quarter 2017... unless another camera company comes out with a viable 8k sensor.

These are just my musings on the subject. I don't really know anything. '-)

I'd be happy to just get the 8K Helium put in my Carbon Weapon sooner than later. The wait for the VV Dragon cuts is what it is, even Jarred can't accelerate that timeline. I just want to be out there marketing an 8K RED camera - even if it's just an S35 frame - in the meantime to recoup some of what I threw down for Carbon and VV. I understand why "don't call us, we'll call you" was instituted for this program, and that RED is undertaking a huge reworking of their lineup - but it's tough out here for a pimp.

Still don't get it do you?

Remember, we were all being flown on a chartered jet to RSH to pick up our CF VV cameras en masse. But then our plane crashed on an uncharted island in the middle of Lake Mead and we were Lost.

Were all dead dummy!

'-)

EDIT: Sorry Blair... didn't mean to call you dummy. Actually meant to say "We are all dead dummies!"
