  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

"8K VV are getting slightly better as well.. We went through a few dud wafers for a bit there but Spherical and Anamorphic 8k VV should start popping up at the end of the month in very small numbers." - FireChief / June Update thread

May the wafers be with us!

I am also keen as I am sure we all are. Whilst the early adopter price was a bargain it also meant I purchased the CF Weapon where I probably would have gone with the Magnesium so serious dollars were spent but I wanted that VistaVision chip! I just hope more roll out soon as I would prefer to not get too far out of step with Reds upgrade path. I assume and guess a whole new design chip is the next step in Red's future upgrade process and the 8K chip is a bit of an odd animal as it is a variant on the Dragon chip not a new design. I of course have no idea when the new chip is coming but as the months roll by the time to create a return on my 8k dragon investment is shortened assuming I take the next step into the new sensor.
Panavisions adoption of the 8K sensor is a huge win and it will be very helpful in selling in the value of the camera to clients but we do need the sensors to do that. This is not meant to be a whinge as I am aware that Red is working hard and are pushing the boundaries of what is possible I am just keen to drive as many miles as I can on my luverly big fat 8K sensor.

I paid within the first few minutes after RED announced the upcoming 8K VistaVision chip... I hope this helps get me one sooner... otherwise I'll just be holding onto my money next time until the new chip is actually shipping... in any case, larger format chips are clearly the future of high-end cinema. Those who say S35mm sized chips are big enough are just like those holdouts in the 1990's who said 2/3rds inch chips were as big as anyone would ever want.

Has it been confirmed that the proposed Panavision 8K sensor is the exact one that will ship in Weapon? Would be cool if it was

Just thinking out loud... how would they make it different? By the way it is setup or "characterized"... or whatever?

Was under the impression that the sensor is the same but the OLPF and color science is custom.

Every announcement and quote has identified the 8K sensor in the DXL as the same sensor as in the 8K Weapon. That said, the impact of the OLPF and corresponding color matrices should not be underestimated. The dyes used in Bayer CFAs, and the far red/near IR wavelengths that help skin tones but can also bleed into other color channels, both complicate color purity. Interesting article on PVC by Art Adams http://www.provideocoalition.com/pa...winning-new-look-large-format-cinematography/ that dives into some of the particulars is very illuminating.

Phil has his 8K in hand and noted that others have shipped as well. Happy dance in full swing, and congrats to Phil who has contributed so much to RU.

Anyone on the queue list have news to report... My Zen patience is under attack by the FULL METAL JONESIN' brought on by Phil's news ;-)

Did Joe, Stacy or Alex get theirs? I am in the market to rent one

It's great to hear that sensor are making its way into the world. Congrats! I can't wait like everyone else. I wonder if CF will get priority first as was indicated so many moons ago. If people report, be sure note if you have a CF or Mag.

At NAB when Jarred told Phil that he was next, I didn't imagine that meant July. Congrats to Phil and others who are receiving these! I'm holding onto hope that I'll see mine by the end of this year, or sooner.

At NAB when Jarred told Phil that he was next, I didn't imagine that meant July. (snip)

I seriously doubt Jarred imagined that either. I'm holding out hope that they get a cherry batch out of the oven soon and can ship at least a dozen VV this month, but I have no idea if that's anything but a fantasy. I am hopeful that Jarred will push out a "July Update" post with good news this week after the RedTeam gets back from holiday... I am hopelessly obsessed with getting mine out to some National Parks for my best imitation of Ansel Adams' landscape majesty. Great time of year to shoot the Colorado high country...

If RED pushes out the top 20 in the 8K RU queue in July . . . that would be all that's needed to brainfuck the haters ;-)

Or to validate the makers. '-)

The nice thing is that RED is pushing sensor technology. As David M points out there is a lot to consider with sensor beyond pixel count. It seams as if the 8K Vista should be a nice mix of resolution, depth, noise making for a high end image. I've struggled with noise, so I'd much rather see bigger sensors which was listed on Red's road map. I suspect that we'll see a 65m sensor announce next year and deliver in about 2?
