  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

Phil, I think what people are curious about is the fact Jarred has had a working camera (as you are well aware) for quite some time now. That and the fact that a big production has cameras (even an 8k crash cam) and new multiple 8k specialty cams are being fabricated for Hollywood superstars. These things they are aware of may be making people wonder if they can get some of these to work, how come they can't replicate that process in at least acceptable numbers?

That wasn't an 8K crash cam. That was an 8K that got hit by a mistake that was made on set. A costly one at that. The number of 8K cameras out there is small due to the difficulties that have been described. There still isn't a vast army of them out there as of yet and as I mentioned, Jarred's is/was a prototype. Guardians getting their 8K cameras was the net result of months of work and that was for < 10 cameras.

Shortly and perhaps sooner I think there will be a few more out there. Jarred hinted at a batch being baked, tested, qc'd right around now. As both Jarred and Brent have mentioned is a day by day process regarding individual sensors.

If you are referring to Fincher's Xenomorphs, those are 6K Dragons in there.

Also, I think if DARPA and NASA would post their timestamps in Stacey's thread, that would give the queue members a better idea how long before 8ks will move into the civilian world.

Custom building advanced prototypes for a specific customer is unlike the production of 100's of cams (or cars, jets etc) that must perfectly match each other. It's a whole 'nother level of complexity and process control.

I have a couple projects lined up for 8K motion when it comes available. Meantime, I'll keep shooting 10K time lapse with the Phase ;-)

20k @ 60fps - 2014
Another interesting sensor. Obviously much more expensive than VV.
But their yields are higher than VV's 1%.

This was at NAB 2016. Announced in 2014, demonstrated in 2015, shown in 2016.

I've had a good look at that sensor. It's 15360x8640 to create a 7680x4320 RBB signal. It can go up to 60fps. I believe this was the camera that was used to show off NHK's 8K HDR demonstration. I have no clue on the actual captured dynamic range.

If you're curious the camera body weighs a bit over 13lbs without anything on it.

NHK has been all about 8K for a long, long time with Super Hi-Vision. I'm a fan overall of their efforts. They are also interested in what RED is up to.

Not sure how that is 20k. :) 15k seems like a better number. I guess people like to round up these days. I wonder if that is the sensor that Astro is using in their camera. The Astro is going to be around a million dollars, from what I hear. Red could probably charge, as Jarred mentioned, several hundred thousand when it goes back on sale. For selfish reasons, I kinda hope they do. :) It will further show just how much of a deal we got for ordering 8k over a year ago.

Japan is very interested in uncompressed video too. The Astro has fiber out as well as a large TB module that gives you~45-minutes of uncompressed 8k. At least that is what I recall from NAB.

Astro is one of at least three vendors that NHK is evaluating for Super Hi-Vizion.

Astro also has my favorite WFM. It shows you a CIE diagram and you can select any pixel and it shows you where that pixel is in relation to 709, P3 and 2020.

Though the delay has been real, the pre-order on 8K was/is probably the best deal ever outside of the recent lucky Scarlet-W pre-orders who got the Weapon MG bump because of the Mother's Day love in the air.

The interesting bit for me in looking at Canon, NHK, and Sony's efforts towards 8K is RED is the only one out of the lot that has an on board single 8K recording option as of yet. It's compressed 8K REDCODE RAW is a format that I was able to integrate into existing pipelines without reinventing the wheel. I was a bit shocked what I have been able to create with the 8K 12:1 REDCODE RAW 60fps frames I shot in terms of how the footage looked. Some of the underlying full color engine DSMC2 overhaul likely going on and that lower noise floor. We recently screened a 4K version of Forged for some film students at RED Studios Hollywood. It was jaw dropping on the projector in my opinion.

Here's that 2K from 8K crop example:

That says so much to me about much of the creative potential behind this resolution. The format size is another thing that I'm really looking to dig in to.

Would love to have seen that. Is that the first time you saw it on such a large display? I have watched it on my 31" LG from youtube. Would love to see an HDR version, from file, if you wanted to share with me. :)

It was the first time I saw 4K uncompressed 10-bit DPX on such a large screen. The web compression pales in comparison. Even from the last row. I ran around looking from every row. Then even put my face right up to the screen.

It's provided some perspective on a few 8K finishing tests I'd like to "go further" with even. The deep blues and overall color was so dead on in terms of calibration as well. Highlight of the month so far for me. Still thinking about it.

Highly impressive 2k frame grab.

Here's a topical sensor that may be pushing the limits of what is currently possible:

+) Its a 15 x 10 cm (ie 8" diameter)

+) a lot of megapixels (> 60 MP)

+) circa 40 million frames a second

No, that's a different (133mp) sensor. Also developed by Forza.
The one i'm talking about has been available to military and scientific institutions for quite a while now. It's much larger than the 8K sensor you're refering to. Nearly 645 medium format.

I'll post the PDF files when i find them.

For one of my birthdays, I drove from Pasadena to San Diego just to get pizza at Filippi's Pizza Grotto. They had listed a WA location for the longest time and I tried to find it and I guess it had closed and they had not removed it from their website. This was many years ago.
