  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Weapon 8k Queue

It would be great if Red can give us a number for our 8K upgrade and then give us an indication how slow the queue is moving so we can guesstimate when our number might come up.

With the yield rate at the moment being 1-3 good sensors out of every 300-500 potential sensors it's damn near impossible to provide estimates as it's literally a day by day news report.

If that gives you any indication, I'd say at the moment it's a slow moving boat with very small batches coming out of the oven.

Agreed, but I get the impression that lack of sensor yield predictability has made that too dicey. Dying to know how many good ones they had in the last batch...

Doh, Phil beat me to it...

So we talking this year, next year or the year after?

Based on what we've hard so far, even Jarred and Brent may not be able to answer that question with any certainty. My take is that any vendor who can only deliver roughly 1 per 100 of usable sensors is pretty motivated to improve that yield rate. What is much harder to postulate is how long it will take to discover and cure the issue(s).

What makes me very happy as a RedUser, even one jonesin' hard for my 8K sensor, is that RED is NOT doing what many other companies do and simply masking bad pixels in DSP/firmware. Their commitment to quality deserves praise, especially these days.

Just curious, How do you know? As others can mask bad pixels with out that being notised in the result image, would it mather much if red did the same? I thought all sensors had a few bad seeds, no?

Seriously? You don't think they can guess whether it will be this year or 2 years from now? Wow.

This sensor is truly RED's masterpiece. I had a chance to play with it at NAB... It's a sensor without equal. They are skipping no steps on these.

Agree. Also on the "queue", I bet there's between 300 to 400 camera's in the queue before anyone on this list (i.e. Cameron/Fincher/Jackson/Scott/etc ... basically these are the guys that are realistically paying for the sensor R&D), so we can't really figure out the ramping based on looking at this queue in reduser. That I'll get the same camera quality that is going into these major productions is awesome.

Having the same camera system as Cameron/Fincher/Jackson is like having the same brush that Picasso or van Gogh had. Camera's or brushes don't make art, artists do.

I'm all for waiting for quality, it just would be nice to know how long the wait is going to be for my business.

Without divulging much, RED's QC on the Dragon sensor tech is very high. Pixels can have many bad states and worse when the "badness" comes in clusters, which can't be mapped out so easily or at all. As you use your sensor pixels can degrade. I don't know what the hard line is with Dragon, but the sensor should last you several years of daily use without much concern if everything goes according to plan.

Seriously? You don't think they can guess whether it will be this year or 2 years from now? Wow.

I'm certain they can make an educated guess if that's what you are looking for. However, I'd also expect a lot of news regarding the 8K sensor tech fairly soon. This month or next month actually. Batches are being created. They are coming in small number, but it is happening.

There's also the additional factor of nailing this particular sensor and camera. I mentioned it in my NAB Journal, but as was seen on the show floor in Vegas, RED Weapon 8K is a bit beyond other's efforts in this arena for now. I learned a lot about other companies who had 8K cameras on the floor as well as one other incoming company. Whether they are making a big 8K sensor or a small 8K sensor there's been all sorts of technological hurdles, the same has been true for RED. However, in the case of the few RED Weapon 8K cameras in existence, these are functional, production ready, and in a rather small package. That particular combination is extremely wild when you consider all of what's going on in there. This is why it won Redshark's Digital Cinema Camera of the year. It was clearly the best camera on the show floor when you add up all it can do.

What we don't know is how many people have the 8K sensor on order. The list is just a sample of those willing to participate. We don't know how many are head of the first person on the list. (hopefully not many!)

Astro's 8k camera is using a 133 MP sensor and that camera will cost seven figures. The 8K Weapon sensor, for those of us that ordered them a year ago, are getting them for a steal! I think when they go back on sale, people are going to be disappointed they did not put the order in when we did.

For those renting the 8K sensor out, I bet it will be a lot like the original RED ONE days in terms of what they can charge. Hell, probably a lot more!

This has been on my mind actually as I'm structuring a budget on an 8K shoot right now. 3 of them.

When the time comes, assuming you need additional 8k Weapons, please keep me in mind. I will most likely rent only to those I know and trust.

Stacey, how did you allow yourself to be number 2 on the timestamp queue? I chuckle that you and Joe are tenths of a second apart. :)

Hopefully it does not turn into weeks, or even months, in terms of delivery between the two of us. :) I will have to blame it on free hotel Internet and the iPad. I had actually fallen asleep because it was taking so long between each announcement. Glad I woke up when I did.
