Has anyone else had just terrible trouble loading/playing videos recently on Vimeo? I have a 50mbps connection, and the videos seem to stutter, load in fragments, and and overall look worse than what's been linked to Youtube lately.

This happens both with loading from a web page and directly on the Vimeo site.

Jupp, it's odd that such a big site like vimeo has so manny errors. Another thing that I can not understand is their search engine... It's mission impossible to find anything with it,while using google with site:vimeo.com and file name finds it directly... Strange that they just can't utilise google for their searches.

Yes! That's been another issue I've had. I would consider switching to using youtube for my portfolio displays, but I'm a bit hesitant because of the lack of customizations that Vimeo offers for embedding. Definitely been thinking about it, though (especially for 4K playback!)

I'm on 100mb fibre (machine I surf on gets as high as 195mb) and I agree with Brendan, Vimeo is a bit rubbish. It's odd but I've only noticed it in the last few weeks, so maybe it's an issue on their side that they're having trouble with?

The speed of your broadband is meaningless, if your broadband company decides to throttle Vimeo and Youtube.

Agreed, but it's not likely that Vimeo or Youtube are throttled by any service provider in the UK that are selling guaranteed unlimited 100mbps+ fibre, as that will negate a lot of sales (as most advertise fast youtube as a reason for fibre).

I'm with the OP - Vimeo has recently (last few weeks) got pretty choppy and inconsistent - and I doubt Brendan and I are on the same ISP :)

I have to agree. I'm on a 500 Mb/s like and the last few weeks watching videos on Vimeo has been painful. My ISP does not throttle any site - for some reason Vimeo has just become rubbish.
I tried Google for answers 2-3 weeks ago, but I couldn't find any information that confirmed my problems. So I'm really glad that you started this thread.
Anyway, they need to solve this, otherwise the money I pay for a Pro-membership seems wasted!

Totally with you on that. Even though bandwidth is ok (at least where I am) video quality seems to be degraded and sound is terribly distorted... Still no signs of clues from Google search.

PS: Oh yeah, Vimeo search is a funny thing!)

Vimeo seems to be having trouble. Not sure what's going on, but I have been uploading tons of material over the past month and recently things have become unstable. They were doing maintenance recently. Not sure if that had something to do with it. But currently trying to upload a video and having all kinds of trouble. Hopefully not a sign to come. Maybe just a bump in the road.

Yeah, I'm getting very agitated that I'm paying just under $60 for the amount of issues that have come up this year. Many times now, when I play a video, the first several frames are dark + cut up into chunks of blocks.

Now, tonight, some videos will full-screen, and others will do this:

Just a new addition of a problem I sent on to Vimeo:

I had a video for a Top 40 group that was currently unlisted and password-protected because they did not want the video to be shown publicly.

Somehow, fans were not only able to find it via search, but then play the video as well. Over 800 people now have seen the video. I have documented this incident, and since deleted the video to prevent it from being leaked any further.

------

They responded with:

Thanks for reaching out. Was this video ever available to the public? It was added to two Groups.

Keep in mind that the privacy settings of a Group will always override the privacy settings for your individual video. For example, a private video added to a Group will be accessible to anyone who views it through that Group.

The same holds true when you add a private video to public Channel. That is likely what happened in this case.

In the future, you can prevent this by unchecking “Add to their collections” under the “What can people do with this video?” section of your Privacy Settings. Sorry for any inconvenience here. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

-------

Does this seem a bit counter-intuitive to anyone else? A private, password-protected video that's unlisted can be viewed on groups?

I sent them a follow-up because whenever I had sent the client the video, they had been prompted for a password. Not so two days ago… we'll see what Vimeo says.

At first I thought it was odd, but then I re-read the response you got. If your sharing preference allows for the people you share it with to share it in turn, by adding it to one of their collections then all bets are off. It makes sense.

Rubbish, can't even get it to work on mobile or tablet in recent year or so, was really great up till then

Vimeo started going down hill at the beginning of the year. For me I had issues with uploading and audio being slightly out of synch, which neither I or their support could figure out. I think they did something new with their "advanced upload process" and since then just became way too unreliable for me. Have since cancelled my pro account and just use YT now.

I was about to go PRO to be used for all Videos of my DRAGON journey, so to be better shared on my new Site... But reading you guys is hosting me that not only Vimeo still has troubles I had seen a year past, but it is actually getting worst... I guess Youtube seems to be my only go to place now.

I'm another that had all kinds of issues with Vimeo. I cancelled my subscription earlier in the year; WAY too slow to upload, process, playback, 1080p, security issues, etc. I know their quality is better than YouTube, but YouTube is free. Not ready for primetime.

Why is this happening. I've seen a number of great products and sites go down because of a change in strategy or development process. Does anybody have any ideas what happened. Is this related to the move from flash to WC3 spec?

Thanks.
