  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

VFS Inclino, Imperio, Origo News ??

there was a similiar problem with preston/bartech ff units. Regulated outputs can cutoff at .5A (not 1.5A). I guess D-tap is partly way to go or make some power distribution box.

James, I can see your idea working perfectly and I can see it failing miserably... all based on luck.

Another thought is to make a small inline box that pulls unregulated power out of the power cable before it goes into the back of the RED. Throw a few 3-pin power outputs in there and you'll be in business.

btw.. when will you have your lcd wood out there?.. no electronic viewfinder bill over here.. :sifone: (no way! only FF35 camera bills)
 
Yeah it seems like powering this thing directly from the RED isn't a viable option after all. Too bad third party companies like Viewfactor and Bartech end up getting the heat because the RED specs are so flaky.
 
My current solution will be to make myself a DTAP cable to power the Impero & Inclino until I get the one I ordered with the rest of the stuff from Viewfactor - and if a firmware update at some point allows me to power it from the RED then that's fine. I do hope that there will be a way to power it from the DTAP and keep the start/stop functionality from the Impero.
 
Yeah....still the problems if you're running off AC adapter.
I guess if Red output doesn't provide a 12V 1.5A output, then it's faulty and a ticket could be raised.
Test is 8Ω x 20 watt resistor across +vout & gnd (pins 1, 4) of the aux power output. If it fails anytime (i.e power up or normal) its faulty.
Red can say whether the 2 two aux power outputs can be shunted together (and how). Depends on output regulation.
Sure Curt is looking into a safe solution.
This will also be a problem for anyone who uses these outputs for their accessory gear on different Reds.

we've never been successful powering anything (including Bartec) off those connectors except start/stop devices. We use the D-Tap for all power and have built several distro boxes.
 
yep...make a lot of sense. fucker is that the design/QA on those ports is pretty simple. Place max load on Red internal power supply, add 50%. Place max load in aux Power supply, add 50%. buy chips to handle twice that. Over test all units.
I know all this sounds easy after the event.
But we're all learning and you gotta love that.

Since there seems to be a big issue with powering off the RED, I am tempted to return my lemo cable and have them ship me a DTap cable with my missing parts tomorrow. I got to have it working for Wednesday, and I am afraid that Curt isn't going to have the new code in place.

Is this a code issue? Or is it, as I suspect, a power-out-of-the-RED issue?

As I understand it - it's currently a combination of the two. I think the code is assuming that there's 1.5 Amps available (according to REDs spec), so the cameras that can't deliver that will have problem.

You might want to keep the lemo (GPIO) cable; you can have both the GPIO and the D-Tap cables connected to the receiver. This allows you to use the remote start/stop functionality of the Impero and get the power needed currently (I think I'll run my setup this way most of the time, just to be safe)

Dangit, I forgot about that. That is one reason that I went with the Viewfactor over the Bartec. Dangit, why can't things just be simple and work well...sigh...

I'm thinking it's doing fine because it's not drawing anywhere near as much as the VF motors can. Powering the transmitter and the lens is probably only drawing 100-200 mAmps.
