  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm unimpressed. No example of what a finished image would look like using his new system doesn't tell us a thing. And saying it's what was used on 24 is like, so totally unedifying.

It would be great if Curt could make the Impero work with out a motor for the Canon cameras so at least we can use it there for those who have one, with out having to mount a heavy motor and a gear ring on the Canon lenses to make that happen.
Just a thought.

You think he'd spend the time and money - and get cameras and lenses from Canon - without actually having tested it out with someone beforehand? He might not be the smartest businessman, but Curt is certainly not dumb like you're suggesting.

Actually - I suggested that exact same thing to him on Twitter

And what did he reply? if he did that is, I think it will be good if he could do this, dont you think? Maybe a gift to those who can bare with the wait.. justa suggestion, I will try and call him next week see what he thinks.I really would prefer to use the canon lens motors rather than the inclino, mine is too slow , and it rquires adaption gear rings for the canon lenses

Considering he already knows the protocol of the Canon lenses it shouldn't be too much of a problem, but I'm thinking there might be a hardware limitation in the cage that prevents this from being possible.

This may be based on some bad assumptions... particularly if it comes from the fact that an Impero can be used to control a canon lens. As it currently exists on the market, this control requires a Birger lens mount and an Impero.

In this solution, all Canon lens communications were implemented in the Birger lens mount, developed without ANY involvement from VF. The Impero has no awareness of communication with the Canon lenses. Nobody outside of the employ of Birger was ever involved with the development of the communication protocols, as implemented in the Birger lens mount.

Also, the Imperos, as sold by Birger, run software developed by Birger.

Good to see you here Erik. I hope to not sidetrack this thread too much. Is there a chance that Birger will develop a product that will control Canon DSLRs?

It seems like a great market to explore and you already have substantial research and development to build upon.

OK back to VF news....

Not sure where you're coming from with this Erik, but there's a lot of assumptions here on your part as well. I'm assuming you haven't seen the video of Curts (USB based) focus control unit that is already working? It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ha1JloTa88&feature=player_embedded

We were talking about the powered Continuo DSLR cage - not the Birger mount.

One question now that you're here... weren't the regular Imperos meant to be supporting the Birger mount too so that I could just buy the Birger mount for my RED and use my existing Impero? My unit doesn't work with someone else's Birger mount...

I thought it was the other way around. If you had a Birger mount with a Birger modified Impero, it could also control the Viewfactor Inclino.

I'm not 100% sure of this though.

My mistake. I saw that video, and did not see any focus pulls. Definitely talking to the camera. But no evidence he is talking to the lens. We were not able to talk to the lens in a sufficiently controlled (repeatable) way over the USB port. If this way works... It is more elegant than what we are working on.

Sorry for the assumption...

The impero is curt's product so this is really a question for him.

apparently Canon is on it already: http://www.freshdv.com/2010/05/canon-geekgasm.html

if i remember, there is a key command in order to tell the controller it is going to be syncd with the Birger mount.
not sure which one, but its in the manual for the birger if i recall.

An update from the VFS forum a few days ago:

Any news regarding the tooling Curt? It seems like your cages is doing very well, so I hope that brings you the money needed to proceed.

Curt:
I'm modeling the tool inserts and sending them to the tooler in LA. They are going to model the final tooling redesign (placing our M.U.D. tool inserts into a larger tool holder that they will manufacture for us. It will allow us to have one big tool instead of several small tools. Basically it allows us to shoot all the parts in one shot rather than having to pay change out fees for every tool change. I'm also working on a couple solutions on the side that I'm mulling over. One of the other options I'm looking at is making a more conventional worm drive version of the inclino that would be the "Pro" version... we would give this one to all the folks waiting on the current design. Working out the logistics and trying to see CNC'ing the billet aluminum is going to be a faster path than using the tooling.
