  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Variable ND across EF and PL is becoming increasingly critical to us. It seems certain that Weapon features no variable ND capabilities as a core proposition.

Does anyone have perspectives/confirmation on whether the $3.9k (and relatively heavy) RED motion mounts are the only options for those wanting (expecting) this on the Weapon CF upgrade path?
 
All motion mounts are the same except the latest version (MG) has captive screws which will help in not losing your screws or have them fall while switching mounts. There are too many limitations with the device and variable NDs are more useful IMHO. But it does have its place if you need a global shutter.

The MG captive screw PL mount is not a motion mount. Is a standard PL.
 
And the motion mount is not a global shutter. when the motion mount "shuts" is only doing ND 0.9 if I´m not mistaken. So if you hit it with a strobe or such you will still see the redraw of the sensor within the shot frames...
 
ISn't there a new motion mount on the "near" horizon for the 8K sensor? Any info on hat?

+1 Nick's comment - having some idea of what's on the horizon for MM would be helpful; even just a hint. The Ti MM's at 227g are on the heavy side for our applications. Not sure of weight on the Mg captive but hoping the claim 'lightweight' is in reference to the weight of other Red mounts.

And Mg MM would be awesome.. assuming Mg is the material of choice for durability on something prone to a lot of wear/tear like a mount (versus CF at least)..?

Hi Björn, don't get it. The motion mount is working on global shutter only when the ND is calibrated on 0.9?

This isn't exactly correct. There are indeed "strobe safe" shutter speeds and modes of the Motion Mount:

The Motion Mount when attached loses 1.6 stops of light straight away.
 
As I understand the motion mount doesn't change the way the sensor is read, it adds ND to the areas it should not be reading. That's why it also works as a variable ND filter.
 
I've been using Variable ND's for a couple years now, but it becomes difficult when shooting long lens material with say a 300-800 sigma or the Canon 200-400 1.4x extender.
In those instances you need to use a rear filter and changing those is a pain. After much deliberation I finally purchased a motion mount (Canon) and I'm loving it!
The ability to incrementally adjust the ND when light is changing rapidly, or throw in the global shutter when needed, is a big plus.
 
will there be a motion mount to cover the new 8k sensor and if so, will i have an upgrade path? or will the current motion mount cover and work with 8k?
 
Does anyone have a definitive answer on this? Wanting to know if existing Motion Mounts support the future 8K ecosystem; if something is in the works, it'd be great to advise us all now and we can make pragmatic decisions on our current vs future needs (and related investment)..

Am particularly keen on whether the current Motion Mounts are future proof to the 8K 'Vista' format in the least...?
 
Staying partially on topic (it's a stretch, I know...) does anyone know where I can order torx screws for a mount (Nikon mount.) I looked in the RED store but couldn't find them.
