  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good question, is the current Epic Canon mount able to work on the Weapon MG? I have both PL and EF mount that works on it so it would be nice if I could just keep using them.

That would be odd since some only have an EF mount. I'd rather not buy the PL TI mount just to be able to send in my camera :P
 
If memory serves me this was once answered and yea any red approved mount works I believe was the answer
 
I believe the wording "PL Mount required, if applicable" refers to the Magnesium PL mount that would be a part of the Woven CF or Forged CF body package upgrades.
Both have the "DSMC Mg PL Mount 2.0" listed in their respective packages (as well as 3 OLPF's) while the Magnesium comes with only one standard OLPF.
With the Magnesium body, we don't get an upgraded lens mount. What you are using when you send it in is what you will be using when it comes back reborn ..

It has been confirmed that the current mounts, including the Motion Mount will work on the Magnesium brain.


Also, when I sent my original EPIC in for the upgrade to Dragon, the documentation referred to including a mount. After talking with my BS rep, I found that they were asking for the mount to help protect the sensor during transit. Was told that if I wanted, I could send in the camera with the RED Front Body Cap (http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-front-body-cap).
Perhaps this would be appropriate for this upgrade, perhaps not. I'm sure RED will let us know...
 
I'm worried that the Red Bricks won't fit on the back. Right now, with the top handle on my Dragon, I'm barely able to fit the Red Brick on the back. How will Red solve this, I will never use XL batteries when I have three Red Bricks.

If you have a PL, we want to see it. First gen PL mounts are not compatible with WEAPON, so we need to test it.

Read the copy. Only send PL if you have one. If not, what you do have so we can set backfocus as part of our OQC.

To clarify, sending with mount is recommended, not strictly required.
 
That is what I figured / thought but the wording threw me a bit and since there are 3 different Weapon Cameras this time ... Makes sense that the CF Weapons would require a PL mount for trade-in since you get a MG Pl mount included with the camera.

We have multiple types of handles and multiple types of battery (including v-lock) solutions. The W Mg upgrade package as configured has no interferences.

That's good information thanks!! What happens if it's not compatible?

I use the Nikon mount almost exclusively and was planning on sending that in with the brain (it's also one of the first ones sent out) to make sure it works with the brain. Is it possible to send in both?

But the base package of the upgrade seem to have the top handle and I don't believe that will be able to work with a v-lock plate on the back. The thing is that if I get all this, I need to re-buy stuff in order for me to work with my current gear. As of now, I have the +1adapter module with the quickplate module and those place the battery close to the handle. If the camera body is shorter on the Weapon, the battery won't be able to be mounted while the top handle is on. Thing is that you say there are multiple types of battery solutions including v-lock, but I already have three red bricks, a charger and I do not plan to use any other battery solution than what I got, that's just not within my economy. So what will happen with the included gear for the weapon? Will I need to just sell them since I won't be using the battery mount now included?

I also have a third party PL mount which I'm not sure is like the first Red PL mount or not, which means, I don't know if it will work. Likewise with the DSCM.

While nobody knows for sure about your 3rd party accessories, do keep in mind the whole concept of the "Accessory Credit" is to help out rolling you into the new DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] ecosystem.

I only have a third party PL mount that I recently just bought. I don't need an expensive PL mount since it's optional for me, but for the occasions when I do need one I can use it. The thing is that it's a waste of money for me if it doesn't work. Then I just bought something for $550 that's useless, only to have to use the credit in order to get a much more expensive one. It's a big big waste for something that's only there as a backup for some occasions.

But as for the other thing about the batteries, that's NOT third party, that's all Red gear that I have and still want to use. So, how do I mount a Red Brick battery on my Weapon and still have the top mount on? Right now, it just feels like the Accessory credit is there to "fix" a broken base package. Shouldn't the base package, the included gear be able to be used with Red Bricks, since the Red Bricks in store is mentioned to work with Weapon? So will I have to trash the top handle just because the Red Brick doesn't fit at the same time?

The "Accessory Credit" is a nice addition to some of the things I need to replace, like the actual quickplate and +1 adaptor module and old top handle and so on, but I can't see a Red Brick solution in store right now and I will not use the Accessory Credit to rebuy my entire power solution.
 
Slight tangent here. Apologies. Is it possible to have the Redvolt Expander with the XL module attached such that you can hot swap the XL batteries...... Anyone?

What ... WHAT ? I had to go back and read that comment again that your responding too. Man, if someone is whining that getting a bunch of free gear is incompatible with another manufacturer ... I just can't emotionally deal with that.

"Whining that getting free gear..."? The thing is that I was promised by a Red rep at a camera event just two weeks ago that the accessory credit will stay so that if I buy the upgrade a year from now I will still have it. So, now I read today that as of after tomorrow that won't happen. It was the main reason I rushed the Dragon upgrade and got onto the tracks. I have very little money left for all this and I'm forced to compress all my economical planning to within the next 24 hours instead of the next 12 months. So, yes, I have questions, I'm not "whining". If you read my question, I was only asking since I don't know if that PL mount is like the first Red PL mount or not, if so I could sell it right now instead of making it obsolete later. Some of us aren't made of money, we need to plan for things like this and right now we are forced to make a decision because there hasn't been any emails about this change or anything other than this confusing thread.

Hi Christoffer

If you go WEAPON or RAVEN, you're going to have to buy some new stuff. There's no getting around that. ...but there are solutions that will get you where you want to go if you're willing to compromise...
