  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

upcoming short shot on scarlet

Hey Phillipe, thanks heaps for posting theses....they look amazing! Especially this shot which I couldn't help but play with :) Done only in RedCine-X...I was going for a crazy strong grade (Michael Bay style). I could have done a much nicer job in DaVinci, but I thought I'd challenge myself just using RedCine.

My RCX Pro only grades (will have a play in Resolve when I get back home):

Went for the sick-greenish look

I went greenish-blue/desaturatd on my RCX only grades (limited myself to curves and sliders only, no post look effects) and added the 2.40 crop.

My Michael Bay style look (top of this page) isn't really suited to this scene...where as your look here totally is! But, can you grade this in RedCine-X and keep the skin-tones in tact? That was my challenge and it wasn't that easy without secondaries. It would look much, much better in my opinion, if he had some skin colour in-tact. The desat/green look you have created is awesome, but the green skin lets it down in my opinion. What do you think?

I backed off the contrast and saturation in this one, it's much nicer than my original one I think. Maybe I'll try and green one hehe :)

Here are a 3 Resolve grades. So many possibilites when the footage is well shot!

Here is the Resolve node structure used on all these grades. I might write up a grading guide when I get some time...

Loved your grades Juan!!!

Guys, they all look great, the power of raw compels you!
Its amazing what can be done.
Thanks everyone.
Juan, thanks a lot for the compliment and for the grades, they look fucking awesome!

Thanks for the comments guys, it means a lot.
We used the Rokinons, 24 and 85, the tokina 11-16 and a canon 50 macro.
We had one light panel, one 2k fresnel and two 650.
And a great crew of four.
Pazuzu was rock solid as usual.
I still have to grade these, I will post more when I have the chance.

the biggest thing im noticing is how well the scarlet works with no lights! Ive been shooting a bunch of stuff with my kids lately indoors and all natural lighting and ive been blown away with the results usings a simple lift gamma adjustment. Clips look great!

I agree Francisco, it's such an amazing piece of hardware.
I said it before and I will say it again, if the image looks bad it's my fault, not the camera's.
This is the kind of responsability you get when you buy a cinema grade camera!

Guys, the film is about solitude(I know, it looks like zombie apocalypse but it is not).
This is the only character and he wander an empty world trying to find something(or someone) that makes sense.
The film is a homage to a very inspiring person named Townes Van Zandt.

Wow, Juan's grade is top notch.
I also like Matt Ryan's dark grading approach, sometimes what you don't see is more important than what you see and it works nice here as it makes it harder to orient, just like the guy (probably).

Watching al these grades is like being in a candy store!

What's with this?
Untitled_1_5_1.jpg

Is there something in the script/plot that would explain this ridiculous bit of makeup?

I'm referring to his bandaged arm in shots 2 and 5

Not sure what that has to do with anything, but cool comment bro.
