Hey Pawel,

You mention your motors are noisy. Any ways around that? Also, are they very noisy or not so noisy that they wreck the sound recording in a drama environment.

thanks,
p

They are RC servos. You may be able to find a quiet one. I haven't looked because I do not record sound.

Also, you may be able to dampen them or use less powerful servos (the once I use are way too strong).

Just letting you know that I have provided Mike Hastings with drawings and other information required to adapt RC Servos to drive lenses. I understand Mike will be offering an inexpensive wired and long range wire-less solution soon.

Working on the brackets and such now. Will keep the group updated.

Used to play with the R/C airplane stuff with my son, but didn't realize how far things had come with the newer digital stuff and I think this will work quite well.

We will be offering a 10 percent discount on housings ordered between now and the end of the annual DEMA show which runs November 4-7 in Orlando, Florida.

I have a feature film I am shooting in Ontario, either with Hydroflex 435 35mm or (trying to sell them on Redone and zeiss 14mm lense kit)I may not be able to bring housing down in time for DEMA..is it possible for u to bring the Birger Aquavideo control panel with u so I could install in Toronto at my machine shop...Kozzzz

Mike,

Are you planning a housing for Scarlet, and if so, how long after final Scarlet specs are announced do you think before one will be available?

Tom

Definitely. As far as timing, it is more about how soon after we get our hands on the actual camera. We got REDONE Serial number 8 and built a working prototype in two days in 2007.

It takes a month to six weeks to do the aluminum housing starting from scratch, but Epic will go pretty quickly because the frontplates and ports should be interchangeable between R1 and Epic housings.

I think we can make a good PVC housing for Scarlet within a few weeks, and really from there it just depends on how we decide to configure it. I doubt if we can go much smaller than the 8" ID of the R1 housing for either Epic or scarlet since you need that diameter for many of the large wide angle cine lenses, but we may tighten it up a bit for a scarlet fixed lens and 2/3 interchangeable versions.

In other words technically it should be fairly easy, it is more about deciding what to do in terms of features/pricing/marketing. So for an aluminum version where it is a lot more work to do one off versions, we will take a little more time to standardize a configuration.

Excellent Mike!

Will be in Ft Lauderdale frequently over the next few months, please drop me a line when you get a Scarlet on the property and have roughed out a housing, would like to stop by and have a look if that's OK with you.

I was happy to loan you my RED #8 for the fabricating. With RED #8 inside that quick proto housing you made, we shot the world's first RED underwater footage on September 10, 2007 off Catalina Island, with Ken Corben and John Friday taking turns diving with the rig, while I hung out on the boat. I'm a splash zone housing shooter (surfing, Jetski, etc.), but I don't dive.

In some ways that seems like 10 years ago now...

Hey Michael, I already asked you about the housing, but I wonder if design couldn't start with dimensions from Red since it seems most are already decided..? Too risky I guess, or perhaps they can't give those dimensions just yet. Have you asked? Any way, I guess a metal housing for Feb-Mar might not be a possibility anyway..? Remember I told you about the stunt where someone is dropped into a lake through thin ice. I would suppose PBC might be better for cold, just a wild guess, but metal sounds like the material for the job regardless.

Just a little week-end cartoon for you diving folks:

Roberto:

Design is halfway there already. Next phase wouldn't save much time over just waiting until I have my hands on an actual camera. From my standpoint I usually go through a two stage process:

1) Optimum design: What's the nicest configuration and size for the camera in its normal configuration?

Then 2) Is there a slightly less optimum configuration that allows a lot more flexibility. For example, if the optimum length is 16" then if I add an inch or two does it make a bunch of other options possible? Then we get into positioning the remote or the drive in different places to see what possibilities that opens up and you really need to just have hands on to do it efficiently.
