this is to all the owners who have their cams for a while...and have shooting experience

which items should be ordered twice/as back up because they are so fragile?

i guess

charger
batteryplate
8 mm wing nuts (topmounts, universal mounts)
joystick (but how to order a spare cable)
drive (if you go with the drive you must have at least two...)
How much batteries are a minimum?--- 3?
Cf module (but how to order a spare module?--how to change the cf module?--how much?)
miniXLR to XLR cable
is the red lasercut pelican case a must have?

charger NO
batteryplate NO
8 mm wing nuts (topmounts, universal mounts) Possible, but no problems here.
joystick (but how to order a spare cable) Possible, but no problems here.
drive (if you go with the drive you must have at least two...) two drives minimum, but I have 5. We only record 20-30 mins on a drive and rotate them out. We also do not erase any media in the field, we only duplicate.
How much batteries are a minimum?--- 3? YES, 4 ideal
Cf module (but how to order a spare module?--how to change the cf module?--how much?) I dont have a spare, but I have drives.
miniXLR to XLR cable YES spares, spares and more spares
is the red lasercut pelican case a must have?
Any type of case is a must have, and this is as good as any.

So far I have only had 1 broken wing nut, a couple bent pins on the cf module, and a cracked top mount.

Ordered an extra set of wing nuts.

Bent the pins back in place and now the cf module works fine. It may be a good idea to have an extra, but I don't know if a DIY replacement will void the warranty? I don't think it should.

The top mount that cracked was the matte finish version. It has since been replaced by a much less fragile version, with a much nicer finish.

Main things to consider is risk and cost.

From the amount of grief that battery plate ($175) has been giving folks,
I’d definitely order one.

I have 6 batteries and depending on your shoot you’ll need them as the camera goes thru them. An AC adapter and/or second charger is important.

I also have 8 CF cards for when you’re shooting them and 3 drives…2 swapped and one backup. I’d have at least 1 spare drive cable and evf /lcd cable.

I’d recommend using 2 Nexto CF backups units (or equivalent) plus laptop for backups on location. They require no external power.

Mini SDI to BNC adapter cables (or ET breakout box) as I hear these are easily broken.

I’ve heard problems with bent pins on CF modules so this is also a nice to have.

I’m guessing for most situations ¾ universal mounts will see you out and I’d like to have a spare top mount as well, thou it won’t be EPIC compatible.
I’m guessing that when EPIC arrives there will be a good market for used non-EPIC Red One accessories!

More importantly, I’d develop a close group of Red friends who can help you in a fix.

Stocking up on some non EPIC spares or having a reliable backup is also something to think about.

I think Red should come up with a recommended list of spares based on the number of failures/breakages.

Cheers,

I have a whole second system. I realized if I ran over my camera with a truck I wasn't gonna get a replacement anytime soon. The insurance company can't pull any strings with Red.

David,

Which Nexto unit do you use and where did you pick it up from?

Thanks,

Hi Kaya,

I prefer light weight and fast turnarounds for my style of shooting.

I have 4 batteries and 2 more on backorder. 4 won't pull you through a long day. 5 are fine and a 6th is nice to have; you can use it for days on a 7" monitor. You need 2 chargers. Batteries and chargers do a good job and are a bargain. No complaints so far.

I don't use the drives. I'm too "unrespectful" with the gear and don't trust the harddisc concept. I don't need long run times (10 min. would be nice to have though) I'm used to 4 min. anyway. Thus I'm using CF only. I've got 20 of them and two Nexto 2525. The Nexto 2525 is a great device and it seems robust enough although it's made of thin metal.

I'm thinking of getting a second CF-Module but in my area there are quite a few Reds around so I'm backuped in this regard.

You need two EFV/LCD cables. Mine are not broken yet but some time will.

Again, for my style of shooting I don't want to dissamble the camera completely to put in its case. I use a Kata HD-CC-3 bag. It's been desingned with Sonys f900 in mind but swallows the Red with some acessories easily. It's very sturdy and great for travelling.

I forgot the Elementtechnica breakout box: Brilliant and a must.

I'm using the Nexto ND-2525 which backs up the Reddrive as well.

Here's the link: http://www.nextodi.com/en/product/ultra_en.html

they come with internal battery as well as two types of external batteries (option)

i'll probably get a couple of Nexto ND-2700 and see what additional speed/backup functions they have.

A good rule of thumb is whatever can go down/break etc should have BU's on set. No one wants to wait around, lose time because there aren't any BU's.

Any cables you order, order at least 3.
I have 6 batteries and 2 chargers. What happens if a charger fails?

I also have a couple of body/lens caps.

Basically, I have back ups for everything except the camera itself and my two lens. But lens can be rented and had pretty easily.

Back up cables are a good idea...LCD, EVF, Red Drive, mini-BNC, mini XLR etc...cables always get abused. At least one back-up power option is good too (e.g: the battery belt clip - then you've also got a good option for going more lightweight too). I think the battery plates will be one of the main things that give out over time (especially if you rent your Red and it gets abused by naughty ACs) - I already had a call from another rental place whose plate had failed that day and they were desperately trying to source another one (not sure if they were successful but it's pretty scary not having any other powering option, especially if every Red in town is booked out that day!)

charger NO

I think it's insanity to not have spare chargers. I typically take 3 on set. I have had two die for unknown reasons, and one destroyed by electrics when they pulled up the power disrto box and left it sitting on the ground (it was found later all busted up.

If you are charging on set, there is rain, the fact that you may be running around and your batts can get orphaned. The best place to charge is on a nice safe shelf on the camera truck, but thats not always an option.
