  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thoughts and Tips responses here...

Can you clue me in? I'm still not grasping what it is doing and why / when I should use it ...

Ryan, what FLUT simply does is to let you control how much highlight you want to blow or how dark you want to dim on the other side. After that, no matter how much lift you do to the image, it will not go beyond the "goal post" height you set on each side. Lim

Don't want to sound annoying but is there an estimate to when we windows people can try the new Redcine-X with the FLUT science?

I mean, is it a thing of days, weeks or months?

In the other REDcineX thread I posted that the Win version will be out on friday.

Thanks Jim for the new "Thoughts and Tips"...
Now it's a lot easier to find something you wrote when I telling someone els to read it. Before I had to remember witch thread it was in.

Really nice to have all the smart stuff in one place without getting saturated with one million "I love Red" responses.

my 4.5k footage isnt rendering out to 1920x1080 pro res files correctly, looks like its not doing fit width, and stretching it to fill the entire frame, am i the only one?

Bring up the framing tool and adjust the fit options for that clip.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the new Thoughts and Tips post. I've already sent the post to a friend of mine who's shooting with the RED for the first time down in Mexico.
I can't wait to get to the office and start looking at footage.
Looking forward to RED day in Feb.

Load up a R3D file, and for a moment ignore the picture. Have a look at the Histogram while you slide the FLUT setting. You'll note that neither black nor white will clip, while the middle parts move. For comparison, do the same while adjusting the exposure slider.

As I understand it, you can use it as a tool to correct exposure without clipping the blacks or whites (of course unless there is already clipping in the Raw footage, then even FLUT won't help.)

Is it only me or is anyone else not able to load the .R3D files into REDCINE-X.

Can anyone help me figure out what exactly I'm doing wrong. I used the files provided on the 1st page of this thread. So i can't ensure their stability, but if it' operator error, can anyone point me to the thread for a proper workflow dealing with this?

Give us some details. If it's a bug your post would probably be better in the Redcine-X feedback thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=40103

This is a really good idea.
A concise collection of wisdom directly from RED, to help stop bad shooting practices. (one of the plagues of this multi-camera, multi-workflow industry)

I tried using some of that footage a while back and it did nothing but crash all RED programs.

I eventually found some usable R3Ds out there but it took a while of searching the forum.

Brilliant, thanks- now I get it. Very impressive - what it can do!

I appreciate the new thread and the tips / best practices. It is VERY helpful to have them located in one ease to read location. :)

I realize that the version of RedCine-X is in alpha, but I was wondering if there will be any documentation that will come along with it? As I have the following questions ...

What exactly is the FLUT control, and how should I be applying it?

The goal posts that are mentioned- where are they located in RedCine-X? Or are they only on the camera?

Graeme just answered here:

FLUT Control is like a very fine degree of control on ISO, and it's calibrated in stops, so +1 FLUT is like doubling the ISO.

Graeme

Thanks Sanjin. :)
