  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thinking of going Monstro.... Should we wait?

So we are getting enough requests for the Full Frame sensor, and the resolution. This forum seems pretty quiet. I have been with Red since the Red One, and have an Epic-W, Epic-MX (2), Scarlet, etc. Thinking I should thin the herd and go Monstro. Is there any indication that we are going to see another price drop or body change at NAB this year? I have been along for all the rides, and just curious if there is any speculation of what's coming next?
 
Can't tell about the future but if you want an opinion on the sensor its simply the best I've ever used. If you need it now, go for it, the quality will not change with or without a discount coming. If not in an immediate hurry, then waiting for NAB is always a wise move, even though Cinegear seems to be Red's preferred show...
 
Monstro is the best camera for now.
I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of the rest of the RED cameras and having only Monstro.
Personally under every light condition it is better on all fronts.
And if Arri comes out with the new Mini Lf it will be a nice combination.

Agree. If money is not an obstacle then to me Monstro is king of the red cameras no doubt. Does not matter how big or small sensor you need I find red 6k to be far superior to helium 8k for example.

But buying one now like a weeks before NAB might sting a little if they decide to cut prices which is quite likely if there is a lot of other large format offerings.

Bjorn how does Monstro 6K compare to Gemini 5K?
 
The new Mini won't exactly be too Mini, but it will remain in the same ecosystem and all that.

As for RED Monstro 8K VV, it's currently the "premiere digital cinema camera" (perhaps my POV, but pretty much a pretty common one) that you can actually purchase in this industry in terms of image quality, format size, and resolution. If you are getting into the RED ecosystem there is indeed an upgrade path to whatever is next, so take that into account.

I wouldn't count out Gemini...



Gemini FF 6K would be a cool choice.
 
Of course, that can be a solution.
But for now Monstro is an excellent sensor, better than everything else, especially in colorimetry in addition is an FF or s35 in the same camera.
Maybe the next update will become dual iso and with integrated Nd, or John come up with a perfect solution with Revolva on FF without vignetting.
The next dmsc3 camera body should have this + the ability to have lcd + bomb and video transmitter usable simultaneously and maybe an option prores 4k 4444 when not using the raw R3d.

I am thinking out loud about what I would like ;)

Absolutely agree with Sergio, 100%. Love my MONSTROs for every application possible. Of course tech is always changing/improving, but certain purchases stay strong through the years. I would definitely include MONSTRO on that list of long-term worthwhile purchases. Clean image consistently, 8K (obviously future-proof), and full-frame. It's the only RED I've ever been in love with. Now if they can just get the thing to boot up quickly, I'd have no complaints. :laugh:

I am guessing the Mini LF will still draw some crazy amount of power like the current LF? Gunna make it difficult to keep it small if it needs two v-mounts to boot up.

The power draw should be significantly less the full size LF.

The body is only slightly larger than the current Mini.

Official announcement should be around March 28th.
